Driving Licence Cards - They expire after 10 years

yep i knew this-read about it somewhere a while back, mine is ok til 2012,

Yes, I knew too. It was stated on the application form. I was a bit miffed as I lost my old license otherwise I wouldn't have needed to change it until 2032 as we haven't moved house since the cards were introduced.

It makes sense to update it as the photos will need keeping up to date. How much does it cost now?

this is something that is easly over looked . How many of us check or make a note when these things will expire.
Thanks for letting us know Wayne. :thumbsup2

It was overlooked by me bacause I looked on the back and saw expires 2037, never looked at it any further, very misleading not making it clear it has a 10 year renewal, I am sure we will all get rewenal letters but post does go missing or addressed wrongly, Only last week I got car tax renewal for a neighbour, correct postcode and name but our house number, I opened it and recognised the number plate.

Also if you drive in this country on an expired photo card licence you commit the offence of 'driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence'!

Thank's again Wayne :thumbsup2 for starting this thread because i've checked mine and it's up for renewal next month :scared1: So it just goes to show i don't check mine often enough :goodvibes

Yup, they will send you a renewal 3 months before though, I just did mine last month, I thought £17.50 was awful just so that they can update your picture! I liked my pic anyway I was only 17 when I got it! I feel old now! :)

Doesn't sound like Jill got a renewal and its due next month.

Quarter of a century since I was 17:scared1: just gone 42:sad1: What a great 25 years though, hope I enjoy the next 25 just as much.:goodvibes

I did my renewal in January - I never knew about its 10 year life either until a friend of mine mentioned hers did, I'd always looked at mine and thought it expired in 2044 ..... I wonder how many people have no idea they license is now out of date??

Its right to do it as we do look different every 10 years - but £17.50 a pop, steep!

Photocard licences were phased in from July 1998 and only in March 2000 were they introduced across the board. So most people will still be ok, it is only those who were applying for their first licence or past a test between 1998 and 2000 that really need to double check the expiry date at the moment.

Claire ;)

Yeah I knew about it, makes sense for the photo ID part of it.

I applied and got a photocard when they first came out - my photocard expires in May 2009 but with postage out here taking literally months I have to do it in advance somewhat.

What does p me off about British licenses ..... we live overseas, in a country where the driving license is a handwriting piece of paper every 6 months from the police station, and the DVLA say I cant have my UK license without a UK address ..... how stupid is that! Why cant they just have an overseas category for licenses for those who live overseas stating that we are overseas residents ..... rather than having to quote family members addresses as our home address:rolleyes:

Thanks for the heads up . Ours expire 2012. But this thread served as a useful reminder to note this :thumbsup2

Not stupid really as the address needs to be one which is suitable for service of a summons, therefore only UK addresses are suitable at this current time.

Just read this on another forum and its something I never knew.
Apparantly some of the 1st issued are now expiring.
Ours are valid until Sept 2013 so OK for now but everyone needs to check if the are renting in US, don't turn up with an expired licence.
Maybe you all knew but its slipped by me this one.
£17.50 to renew details here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_078070

posted last year re this as DS pointed it out when we were compareing phots on holiday
But good to have a reminder

Thank you Wayne ~ ours don't expire until 2013 but I had forgotten all about this until I read this post. I've now made a note at the back of my diary which I will carry forward each year until 2013. :thumbsup2

Wow. I had no idea at all about this 10 year thing. I checked my license and I am okay until 2012, but if it hadn't been for this thread I don't think I'd ever have known.

I knew of this but then I have only ever had a photo licence, mine is due for renewal in May but seeing as I need to do my cat C1 test soon I will wait & do the lot together.

We got reminded of this in work two weeks ago.

On the article we got sent, it also stated that if licences were not renewed in time and you were pulled over by the police or other services and asked to produce your licence, it can result in a fine of £1000! :scared1:

So it's most certainly something that should be kept on top of! Even if the £17.50 sounds ridiculous to re-new, it's surely better than £1000!
