Hello everyone!

I'm new to the Dis and just wanted to say 'Hi'!!
I'm driving from Winnipeg Aug 22,2004 with my hubbie, Mom, sister, her boyfriend and our 2 girls, aged 2 and 4! It will be a full van but we are soooo excited! We are staying at the Cypress Pointe Resort.

I was wondering if anyone has ever driven from Winnipeg before and if you had any tips for me?? It is suppose to take 32 hours from here. We are planning to drive right through. We have 4 drivers so it shouldn't be too bad. We will do some stopping in the daytime. Any suggestions??

Thanks
Jocelyn

Well first off-welcome to the dis!!! Another Winnipeg'er-yahhhh!
I have looked into the drive as well-my dad is a trucker-he did let me know the drive was doable (but don't all truckers think that-lol) in 32 hours. I suppose the only thing to look at would be which route to take-did you use mapquest or get a trip tik from CAA??
Some of our family may be doing the same thing as you and driving from here down to wdw for our wedding in Oct (we will be flying).

YIKES!

Hi Jocelyn

I completely forgot to welcome you to the DIS when you sent me your email........sorry.:wave2:

But welcome to the DIS and especially the Canadian Boards..........you'll meet some really nice people and get a ton of great information and tips!:sunny:

Hey Jocie! Welcome, I am also a new member (just under a month) and found this spot to be extremely helpful in planning/preparing for a trip.

On a side note, I'm born and raised in Toronto (Mississauga is where I now reside with my Husband and 2 sons) but have many relatives (father's side) in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie!

We did the trip from Toronto 2 years ago and are planning on driving again next summer. We took I75 the entire route and there is a wonderful book - sorry can't remember the author - that I picked up at Chapters on I75. The author lists every exit and what is available at that exit - food, gas, hotel. Also it had mileage down the side of page and tons of coupons and interesting facts on the area you are driving thru. I found this extremely helpful when deciding where to stop for lunch, how many more miles it would be and making sure the restaurant was a Cracker Barrel. I made the mistake of stopping at one on our first day in Ohio. I had eaten their before on business trips to the States but my boys had not. Once they tasted the food it was Cracker Barrel for the entire trip down and back. Anyway sorry, I'm getting off topic.

At the time my boys were 13 and 9 so I made sure they each took a knapsack with handheld games, crossword puzzles, reading books and CD players with CD's. Our van does not have a DVD so they had to settle for music. I also packed a cooler bag with water, juice, granola bars and Doritos. They also brought their own pillows from home and make sure to take wet wipes for hands and face.

I gave each of them a map with our route highlighted in yellow so they were able to follow along and not continually ask for my map.

We made sure we stopped every 2 hours for a 'pee' break and a quick stretch. I 75 has rest stops every 50 miles and they were clean and tidy (except Ohio they had to be the worst on the entire trip). They also had machines to dispense cold drinks and snacks and some even had small cafeterias for fresh coffee.

The trip from Toronto is approximately 24 hours. We decide to do it in 2 1/2 days. On the 2nd day we stayed just inside the Georgia border. The next morning we slept in, had breakfast and then travelled 30 miles down the road to the Florida border. This was the most important border crossing and we had to stop and have our picture taken under the Florida sign. We then drove another 4 hours into Orlando and shopped until our room was ready. I didn't want to drive too many hours the last day and it worked well for us. Once we arrived at our htl. we were able to unpack, relax, swim and have an early night so that we would be rested and refreshed for our next day visit to the Magic Kingdom.

Next year will be more challenging I'm afraid. I am looking into purchasing those personal DVD players (1 or maybe 2 if I can get a reasonable price) so they can bring along their favorite movies. Seems they need more to do as they get older so this may help a bit. Also we added a little black toy poodle to our family last summer and I have been told that if she does not come on our family vacation then they may boycot the entire thing so I now have to find hotels that allow dogs.

Anyway have a wonderful time browsing the boards, there are also several ready good sites that offer tips on travelling, packing, and what to see and do in WDW.

:earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsboy:

Thanks for all the suggestions!

This site is fantastic for all the information! I love it!!

We will be travelling I-29 to N Dakota all the way to Kansas City, then I-70 to Illinois, thenI-24 to I-75. So we will be on I-75 but for only about half of our trip. Do you think that book will still be worth it??

Hi ya,

I am also new here!
and have two little girls ages 2 and 5.
I also live in southern manitoba!

I made a trip to Flin Flon, Northern Manitoba, last week, and about half way back I stopped and bought a DVD/TV combo for the Van.

I was so glad I did because I was ready to....because the girls were just tired of being in the van. It was a 12 hour drive, and the tv helped. and believe it, the last half of the ride was very quiet.

So get one of those TV combo things, would be my suggestion

Have a great trip.

I found it most helpful when locating the next gas station or resturant. It is really worthwhile to have.

You could try the library. If they have a copy borrow it and then photocopy the pages you need.

Check out Chapters or any bookstore in Winnipeg. Glance thru it and see if it will suit your needs. I honestly can't remember how much I paid for mine.

The CAA also offers this service of creating trip tickets which are pretty much the same thing. They high light the route and it gives you info for all the exits, but I think you have to be a member of the CAA to have this service provided for you.

If you are a CAA member. they will also create a Trip Ticket for you.

If you do not know what it is, it is a series of maps from your departure to your arrival. It also has useful info such as rest stops, constructions and if they have access to discounts, they will also give them to you.

Just a thought.

I just came across this area of the boards this morning. I don't know how I missed it before! We are planning on going down to Orlando, but it will be a surprise for our kids. They will open up the ticktets, etc on Dec 26, and then we will drive to Wpg to fly out the next day. The hardest part is keeping it a secret. We live about 13 hours north of Winnipeg, and we have thought about driving down to Orlando. I guess what I'm worried about is that I will ruin all the relaxing from the cruise (our first) by driving for so many days after. Our three kids have become pretty good travellers since we moved up here, but I just haven't decided. Airfare is so expensive, and I don't think I'll be able to get any deals because we're flying down during the Christmas rush.

Let us know how your driving trip turns out. My nephew said that the WalMarts in Winnipeg have those personal DVD players for around $55 now, so that is something that might save your sanity! Remember the headphones though!

It's great to see so many fellow disney fanatics from Manitoba, I don't feel so alone anymore!

Welcome the Canadian area of the dis boards!
Boy you are way up NORTH!! LOL-I grew up in Snow Lake which I thought was far enough away from everything!
Great idea on the suprise! We suprised our son on our last vacation! He was 10 years old..we kept the whole thing a big secret..the morning we were leaving we went in his room and said "wake up...were going to disney world!!!" That was sooo exciting!
I'm with you on the driving-will do as little as possible..I would be fine on the way down but on the way back I would be just anxious to have the road trip portion done as quick as possible..I am not a "enjoy the journey" type of person-just need to get to my destinaition..plus vacation time is a premium.

With the price of gas right now, I don't know if we would really be saving much by driving. It would mean having to drive around big cities in the US too, and I don't know if that would work. My husband gets VERY frustrated in traffic, since you rarely have to stop at a stop sign up here. You get away from things like that, and you just don't have the patience anymore.

Grover,
Since you are from Winnipeg, where do you think the best deal is to get airfare? We are a family of 5, so every little bit helps. We are wanting to fly Dec 27, so I realise that there won't be very many deals out there at that time. Have you ever thought of renting a car one way, and driving from someplace just across the border? Do you know which airports would have a flight to Orlando? Minot, Fargo, etc?

:earsgirl: :earsboy: :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Fares were not much cheaper out of North Dakota..but if you were willing to do a 7 hr drive out of Winnipeg you can find great deals out of Minneapolis.
We did this once (in 2002) and we only paid 900.00 Canadian for 3 return tickets...pretty much is half of what we pay to fly out of Winnipeg. There are numerous airlines out of Minneapolis airport-they are all listed on the airport website.
I paid 1860.00 for 3 return tickets on NWA out of Winnipeg for this Oct.
Other airlines out of Winnipeg are Air Canada, and Continental.
I have always found that NWA is the cheapest.
I have also heard that WestJet is going to start flying to Orlando this year-however they haven't released the schedule yet (or if flights will depart from Wpg..) but they would have some good prices I am betting.
You are right about the price of gas..you would also have to factor in food, accomodations there and back as well as what your vacation time is worth to you! Once you add it all up it may seem more reasonable to fly.
NWA has companion fares..here is the link to the website..just punch in your dates and it will give you a price
http://res.nwa.com/App/OffsiteSearc...e=roundtrip&cache=1072496459734&requestId=137
(note I have bookmarked the page where Canadians search for fares..you get your prices in CAD) ***forgot to add..you should search by flight schedule..alot of times when searching by fare nothing will come up-it will if you do it by schedule***

Hello fellow Winnipeger's and Manitobans! I don't post much here, but have been reading here for a long time. The best way we have found to get to the "Magic" has been out of Minneapolis as well. As a matter of fact, I just booked last week, and this is what we paid last year -$1005.00 Canadian for 5 of us! If you keep a close eye, and are quick you can find great sales from there or Omaha (which is like driving to Saskatoon from here). Right now, Omaha is sitting at $153. return till the end of June. I just sign up for fare alerts for Minneapolis, Omaha and Milwaukee, and go from there.

Hi there
I'm another one from Winnipeg but I don't post much. I do follow the DIS alot.
We drove in 1980 and 1992 and the time is about right. All thother trips we have flown. We have flown NW through Minneapolis to be the least expensive.
We use the CAA trip tiks and find them very convenient.
Even when we drove there we left the car in the parking lot at the resort and used the Disney buses. It made the holidays that much more enjoyable.
It's great to see so many Manitobans on the DIS.
Have a great trip however you get there.
Bruce

Nothing to add, just wanted to say hi to all my fellow 'Peggers and Manitoban's :D

Just wanted to say that: Winnipeg ranks among my favorite Cities, worldwide! In my heart it ranks up there with Munich, Prague, San Francisco and my beloved Montréal. I visited in 1981 when hitchhiking across Canada, and was taken in by a very generous and friendly Ukrainian family. I stopped at their house on the way out and back. Great city folks!

As for places to stop on your W'peg - Orlando roadtrip, I'd suggest a visit to Memphis, just for the ribs, tho Graceland is fun to visit too. If your route is more easterly, there is of course Nashville, tho I haven't been. Doubtless your route will lead you near or thru Atlanta, which has multiple attractions including, the Martin Luther King Jr memorial, the "World of Coke" and you gotta stop at Fat Matt's Rib Shack for great food and music.

Just my two cents. Have a great trip!

Hi All.. This post is fairly old, however was hoping that some of the Manitobans on here that have done the driving to DW can comment or get in contact with myself. We are going down this Aug 2015, and any tips or places, hotels, etc that you stayed at during the trip would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance...

Holy cow. An 11 year old thread!

Slness, I would suggest that you have a look at the Transportation board. There is a thread called the For 2,000+ Mile Round Trip Drivers Only. There is at least one Manitoban there who has made the trip in the last couple of years.

My only suggestion, having done the drive from Ontario a few times is to use CAA for a triptik and research your hotels on TripAdvisor.Have you done any long distance trips in the past?

No, not since I was a young child.... Going to be adventure for sure, with a 7 year and 4 year in the vehicle... Yes, I have heard the triptik is the way to go.. I might have to sign up to CAA..
