I may have missed it being mentioned in this thread, but I know some people dodge DC by taking I-97 to US-301 from Baltimore. It’s not an interstate, but it takes you down the east side of the Potomac, then crosses and meets back up with I-95 between DC and Richmond. Could dodge a bunch of traffic!
Also if you’ve never seen Charleston, Hilton Head, or Savannah, driving past them is a good excuse to stop & explore (even if you stay the night somewhere cheaper along I-95 before those points).
