we will be on a "loose" schedule as far as timing (staying at a friend's house, so no hotel reservations) and definitely do not want to do the trip in one ride... looking for ideas of places to stop, hotel recommendations (indoor pool a huge plus!), route recommendations, fun stuff to do along the way (kids are 15, 13, and 2)... any and all ideas welcomed! :cool1:

Instead of taking the Bay Bridge, you can go through DE and take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. It is something different and there is a restaurant there.

No matter where you go around Christmas time, especially trying to get through the DE/MD/DC/VA corridor, you are going to hit a ton of traffic.

If you follow the PP suggestion regarding Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and/or don't mind driving a little out of the way stop at Williamsburg Virgina. Stay at the Great Wolf Lodge, indoor water park. Obviously this doesn't apply if you're only looking to stop overnight.

OMG - Williamsburg is my favorite place; my mom and I go every year for a shopping trip!

i was thinking of the great wolf lodge... we spent a few days at the one in the poconos a few years ago...
how far out of the way is williamsburg? is there anything in wintertime other than GWL to do?
i like the idea of the tunnel instead of the bridge...
thanks!!
any other ideas? maybe for stuff further south? anyone know anything about gem mining in north carolina (dh is interested in that)?

I am guessing the OP was thinking Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to 64 West and picking up 95 South in Richmond. Great Wolf Lodge is right off of 64, just west of the Williamsburg area (Williamsburg is also just off 64). Colonial Williamsburg will have Christmas decorations up by then and that is always fun to see. And, if you have time, you could have dinner at one of the taverns in Colonial Williamsburg. GWL is not too far away from CW (maybe 15 minutes or so).
