Has anyone on the boards driven from New England to Hilton Head? Is it worth it? I know we are looking at 16+ hours of drive time but flights are priced ridiculously high right now. Driving and stopping for an overnight each way, as well as gas & food, is coming up cheaper than flying down.

Hello,

I am originally from Rhode Island and now live in Savannah, GA, (a half hour from Hilton Head). I have done the drive or flown back and forth to RI over the last 10 years. Sometimes the ride is quick and sometimes we have hit terrible traffic on the 95 corridor. At those times I wish we had flown. But not having to deal with airports, changing planes, and having our own car are all a plus. I guess it depends on your tolerance for long rides and possible traffic.

If you drive, the most important thing is to plan when you will drive through NY, Baltimore and Washington, DC. If you can avoid morning or evening rush hour do so. If you can drive through those cities on a Sat or Sun early in the morning, even better. Our son drives straight though overnight when he visits. (We stop part way) Two weeks ago he left Savannah at 4PM on Sat afternoon and arrived home in RI at 8AM Sunday morning. Got right though the big cities very early on a Sun morning and had no traffic or construction.

You will love Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort. Even though we live so close, we have stayed there more than once on points. The island is made for bike riding and there is so much to do.

We drove from Northeast Pennsylvania a couple of years ago with a stop-over for resting, etc. It wasn't easy but we made a lot of memories during that drive! We would've flown but knew for certain that we would want a car while there so we drove as flying plus a car rental was far more in the end.

Fly somewhere closer but cheaper and rent a car, you'll need a car anyway. There are several airports within 2-3 hrs other than Savannah. I wouldn't try to fly in to HH anyway.

I drive a lot from ny to fla ,the trip is not that bad make sure you do the speed limit lots of speed traps along the way ,once you start getting into Virginia and all through the southern states on 95 they like to hide .95 becomes 70mph down south but I still see people get in pulled over

Charlotte NC airport is about four hours from HHI and Atlanta's airport is about 4 1/2 hours. Both are major hubs.

My wife and I just got back from HHI a couple of weeks ago.......spent 13 nights there and had a great vacation. We've driven from New Hampshire to HHI a couple of times now and look forward to more trips in the future. Usually, we drive down through the night and are able to avoid a lot of traffic. While driving through the night can be difficult we just make sure to take turns driving and napping every couple of hours. Our drives home have so far been during the day (weekday) and the traffic has been terrible (especially around DC). I think in the future we might try driving home on a weekend. Either way it was definitely worth the drive....HHI is a terrific spot to relax and unwind.
