DSis is considering buying one... she totaled her beloved Civic two weeks ago and has to buy something new. Note, she has yet to even SIT in one because of her injuries, but loves what she found in the brochure, LOL

What model do you have? Do you like it? She'd get the EX Sedan with cloth. Loves the coupe, too, but wants more practical if she's gonna have to have car payments again.

Your thoughts on it? Likes/Dislikes?

All know is the Honda Accord is one the most reliable cars that I know of.

I would sit down with the brochure and decide which features that she won't in the car and the ones she don't won't.

That's how I would make my decsion. Be sure to test drive the car.

I would never buy a Honda...... and I am here today because of it!

I hit a deer with My Ford Windstar (actually the deer hit me). The impact was the deer's body to the side of my van. If I had been in a Honda or similar smaller car I probably wouldn't be here today.

Reliable.... yep, but IMO safe??? Nope.

Good luck finding the car of her dreams!

I am interested to hear what others have to say as we are considering purchasing an Accord ourselves.

my dad got one maybe a month ago, new. He loves it, I hate it...but, the kids get no say, so I just don't ride in it!

He traded his BMW in for it....thinks it will be more reliable/cheaper to maintain...I think he shoulda kept the cute one!

I/we owned two (yep, all 6' 6" of me). The original '76 hatchback and the first 4-door, an '82. Both were about half the size of the current models. They were both great cars. Honda is consistently rated amongst the best, most dependable and safest cars in the world.

We love Hondas....SO reliable! We're on our 6th or 7th between me and DH....

As for the Accord, we had one and liked it until the kids came along and traded it for the Odyssey....easier to get them in/out of car seats :) (In any sedan I found myself with aching back leaning in/out of the back seat strapping them in/getting them out. Yuck. Got a minivan with big sliding doors...easy access, no leaning.

Anyway, my only complaint about my Accord was the lack of power. We'd gotten a 4-cylinder thinking we didn't need the 6. I'm here to tell you: GET THE V-6!!!!! The Accord is a heavy car and the 4 cylinder is quite sluggish. Uncle's V6 does quite nicely and we like it a whole lot better :)

We used to have an Accord EX and I loved it. We sold it when it had 130,000 miles on it and never had a problem.

I would only buy an American made car.

P.S. I have worked for GM for 27 years.

I have a 2002 Honda Accord and love it. I went with the two door one for a more sporty look but people have told me its very low and hard to get in and out of. Im 5'8 and dont have a problem though. Its been good to me the last 2yrs in the snow too..would highly recommend!

Okay, I have to comment on the safety post...

I have been in MAJOR accidents in two Hondas and walked away wtihout a scratch. At BOTH accident scenes, the paramedics told me it was only because I was in a Honda. One was a tiny Honda Del Sol, the other was an Acura Integra. Both small cars, but they said that was why I walked away.

My sister, who is looking for another, slammed headfirst into a median wall at 75 miles an hour 2 weeks ago. She walked away with a small fracture in her T12 vertabrae. Once again, the ambulance paramedics told her that her Honda saved her life.

So don't discount them because they're smalll... We're living proof to the fact they're incredibly safe.

Just couldn't help but offer my personal exp =)

I own a 2002 Honda Accord. I said I would never buy foreign. But after purchasing 5 American cars and putting lots of money in them I said enough was enough. My American cars never lasted as long as the loan.

My Honda, I just put gas in and go. I am spoiled now. I change the oil every 3000 miles and do the maintenance required and I am good to go.

Good luck in your search.

And Chuck, it is getting difficult to tell what is 'an American car' and what is not. 'American' cars are built out of the country, 'foreign' cars are built in the country, and vis-a-vis. And virtually every car, regardless of who owns the car company or where it is bulit, is comprised of car parts from all over the world. Cars are more global in nature today.

aimeedyan, I'm glad you commented on the safety post. I was beginning to think I was crazy because no one else said anything about it! People hit deer all the time in cars, my boyfriend hit a deer head on in his honda civic and was just fine, just needed a new hood and bumper.

tricia.

I have a 1999 Honda Accord EX Coupe (2 door). I have been nothing but happy with it. It has been wonderfully reliable. All I have had done to it in the entire time I have owned it is to have the electric mirrors fixed (it was still under warranty when it broke, so it didn't cost me anything to fix it) and routine maintenance like oil changes. It has good pick-up (it's only a 4 cylinder), and it has a responsive, smooth ride. I imagine that my next car will likely be a Honda too.

DH is still driving our 1990 Accord - she isn't pretty anymore but she's still reliable.

As for the deer, one walked into our 1992 Civic when it was three weeks old - the entire fender needed to be replaced. Neither DH or I were injured - we wear seatbeats.

We still have the Civic and I drive a 99 Odyssey.

DH is about to buy a pickup truck & is very disappointed that Honda doesn't make one.

I've owned four Accords and I am a Honda fan. I used to drive 40k per year, so reliability has always been important to me. I've never had a major problem with any of them.

1990- 4 door- 254k miles before my son totalled it (not his fault), but received only minor bumps after a side impact to LF.

1995- 4 door- 238k miles. Gave it to my son but he traded it recently because it would not pass emissions because of the performance mods I had made.

1999- 2 door- V6- 98k miles- Traded it in on my new one.

2003- 2 door V6-6 speed- Love every minute of driving it! It is quick! When the warranty runs out I'll make it even quicker!

The above represents 601,000 with NO major problems. All of the above were built in Marysville, Ohio, USA.

My wife drives a 2000 Odyssey; daughter in law has a 1999 Civic; daughter just traded her 1992 Prelude for an SUV; son just bought a 2004 Accord EX 4door/4 cyl.

NO major problems on any of the above!

I hear friends and co-workers talking about the problems they have with their new non-Honda cars and I just shake my head and wonder if they will ever learn...

If you follow the maintenance schedule, you will most likely never have a major problem!

My Dh owns a 96 Honda accord and loves the thing, Has
'kissed" a deer , had it backed into by a full size van and it's still going strong.

now me being from MI and a GM girl I own a Saturn

Glad to hear so many positive things about the Honda's. We have been talking to people since we are interested and everyone has a great story to tell. Now I can't wait to get back to the US to test drive one!

Any comments from current owners on what features are a "must-have"?

Yep, lots of Hondas are made in Marysville, Ohio! Not Japan...

I've owned a Civic, an Accord, and a CR-V. Loved them all. Gave the Civic and Accord away to people who were in dire straights and needed good, reliable transportation at the same time that I was shopping for a new car. I sold the 2 year old CR-V because I moved to Japan and couldn't store it and didn't need it here.

I'm a Honda addict. When I get back to the US, I'm sure I'll buy another one.
