I'm going to David's Bridal on Saturday to try on some dresses, but I don't know what kind of undergarments I should wear. Should it be something similar to what I'm planning to wear on the actual day, or will a regular bra and underwear be ok? Has anyone wore those "shaping" things to try on dresses? I kinda wanted to, to hold in the extra rolls  , but I didn't want the salespeople to think I'm crazy either.

My mom always said when shopping for formal wear you should wear/bring the undergarments and shoes you want to wear that day. Personally, I usually pick those up depending on what I decide I need after getting my dress.

Either way, have fun :thumbsup2

dont worry when i went to davids bridal and most other places they give u a long line bra to use while trying on dresses. good luck :goodvibes u r getting married right before me!! ;)

Wow, and you're from Jersey too!

What's a long line bra?

A long line bra is a very uncomfortable, very unflattering bra that covers your breasts to your belly! But, it works under most gowns! (Not sexy!) :teeth:

its a bra that goes down to your waist and pulls u in kind of kind of like a corset that hooks in the back instead of ties. i live in south jersey how about u? :goodvibes

My Consultant at David's Bridal also gave me an undergarmet bra to wear....it was called a bustier or something like that! And she also gave me a tulle skirt ... can't remember what they are called...to wear under the gown to make it fuller! That's sad that I can't remember............oh yeah, a petticoat! LOL!! :lmao: Brain freeze, I guess?

I live in north/central Jersey, about 25 minutes outside of NYC :sunny:

I'm so glad you asked this! I've been putting off dress shopping because I am too embarrassed to go in the stupid room with the lady who will see me in my undies! I am SOOOO private when it comes to my body. Others suggested having my mother or sister go in with me instead, but that's even worse! I wish they would just let you get it up around yourself and then come in to help you. I only have 8 1/2 months till my wedding and still haven't gone dress shopping because I can't face the embarrassment! It's good to hear that they give you some things that cover you a little more, but it still doesn't make me want to go!!

Haha! I know what you mean. I was shocked when the sales woman who was helping me said "now take off your bra" So embarassing...

I used to live in NJ too - small world!

I guess it depends on your body size/shape/etc. I am small (size 4) and I worried the bridal boutique wouldn't have the right thing in my size. I also wanted a dress that would look great and be comfortable without a lot of special undergarments. I didn't want to spend my wedding day with things pinching and pulling. I went to V.S. and got a comfy strapless bra (as comfy as those things can be!) and just wore my regular panties. My dress was "the one" for many reasons . . . but one of those was how perfect it looked on me with my regular underwear!

SRUAlmn - I got my dress 7 months before the wedding so 8 & 1/2 months is not too late. Dress consultants have seen it all. I was a little embarrassed too, but I figured I'm not the only girl she's seen that day 1/2 naked so what the hell, she was there to help. The boutique I went to was very discreet too, and that helped.

Tiggerific04 - Best of luck in your dress shopping - let us know how it goes :)

It's a little harder for me because I'm not a size 4! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Just Kiddin', thanks for the pep talk! ;) I know I have to just suck it up and go. I know it's just a day on the job to them, but it's just so embarrassing to me that it's making me feel sick to think of going and I don't want to feel that way about something that should be so fun and special!

I used to work for David's Bridal. I bought my gown there a few months ago. Most consultants there will give you the Felina bra. It's a really good long line shaper and surprisingly comfortable. It doesn't have the bones like most other bras, and it gives cleavage. They will let you use one and a slip (they have two varieties of that too depending on how full your gown needs to be). They will also help you with shoes and anything else you might need. If you don't want any help in the fitting rooms, just tell your consultant. They are there to help you zip up and get it over your head, but if you're not comfortable with her in the room, speak up. She won't mind. Another thing, most of the gowns in the Oleg Cassini line have built in support so you probably won't need to purchase another undergarment. I bought one when they were having a sample sale. So i saved $300 on the dress, it fits like a glove (or did 4 months ago) and I don't have to by a bra to wear underneath. Good luck with the search.

Just one more thing... prepare yourself that wedding gowns typically run two sizes bigger than your actual size. I had a lot of brides that felt discouraged by this and cut out the tag of their gown so they didn't have to look at it. If you're normally a 10, you may need anywhere from a 12-16.

SRUAlmn- i am so glad there is someone just like me i have been putting it off for the same reasons!!!! Exactly!!!!! i keep saying as soon as i lose 10lbs i will go but that never seems to happen!!! and yes i think it would be worse for my mother to go in with me too. i am so weird like that. :wizard: well here is some pixie dust for us to go get our dresses!!! :goodvibes i must say though i went to david bridals once and the woman gave me the long line bra and the skirt thingy and when i put them on i was covered all the way so i didnt mind, and she was out of the room while i put them on. good luck to you!! :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: This so happened to me!!! I now laugh about it but oh my gosh I was SO discouraged!! I told the lady that I am a size 10. Ok so she brings me a bunch of size 12 dresses. Not a big deal, right? Well it is when the very first dress that you try on won't zip up!!!! So she had to go get a SIZE FOURTEEN!!! I lost it in the dressing room. I cried and cried. I felt bad for my poor consultant!! But she was so sweet and considerate! So after that dress, she returned all of the size 12's and got 14's and 16's. When she told me what she was doing, I was like, "NO!!" :lmao: And actually, the dress that I got is a size 12 and it fits just perfect!!

Each dress has a different cut and style. They will all fit differently and some you will need a different size to try on. For me, I just think it was funny!!!

I was literally sick to my stomach about going because I didn't want some stranger to see me half naked. My mom called the store and asked about this and they said it was no big deal and they will gladly let a friend or whoever help instead. They said it's just a service they offer to help, but that it's not required the woman be in there with you if you don't want her to be. What a relief!! :thumbsup2

I don't think there is that much they haven't seen yet! That's the idea I always keep in my head on moments like that!

I know, I know, I am just a very self-conscious, private person. I know we all have beautiful bodies and have nothing to be ashamed of blah blah, but I just cannot help it!

Everyone who is "putting off" the dress shopping, IMO, is being very smart! I did the exact opposite thing. I bought my dress 14 months before my wedding. What did I do the week after I bought my dress? I tore my meniscus in my left knee :sad2: which made me go from running 40 miles per week to not even walking for 2 months! I am just starting to run again and realized I put on a few pounds. I just hope my dress fits when the time comes  How awful would it be if my gown didn't fit?? I am probably the only bride-to-be who gains weight before the wedding!

When I went in and gave them my size (i wanted to try on a 6 or 8) she looked my body over and said that most dresses run a couple sizes bigger (I thought she was just commenting on my weight). Come to find out she was right. But we get in the dressing room with the dresses and :cheer2: I was my actual size!! YAY! (It was a good day in the neighborhood that day!)
