Dopey 2015 Official Thread

Damn.... now that's a tough day. Sorry the weather wasn't better.. Now you can rest up and heal up a little. I'm happy to see you still had that killer competitive instinct the last .2 miles

That's funny, I thought the same thing about John's last .2 kick. Way to get out there and get it done John! After that Dopey will be a breeze!!

Thanks for the cool replies. I have been paying for my lapse of common sense with knee issues, but it is worth it. ::yes::

Time now to build up a larger base for my Inaugural Palindrome Weekend, Dopey + Fort Wilderness 1/2 Marathonon Monday, Disney Dream 10K on Tuesday and Castaway Cay 5K on Wednesday. It will be slow with no sprinting involved.

You're insane...but in a good way ;) Good Luck! :cheer2:

NOT WELL!!!!

Cold temps for sunny Florida as a front had pushed thru. Winds never turned as predicted either.

Got to beach in wet suit, stood around watching water not liking what I saw. Had smaller breakers than last year but water beyond looked angry to me. Pros were set to go and the announcement came, swim cancelled due to wind and rip currents. The safety boats couldn't handle the water conditions. 0700 water start became a TT bike start for pros at 0800.

Getting to bags and changing was a mess. Stood around freezing, high 40's winds 25/30 and gusting higher until my wave start in numerical order. Swim cut-off was 0920 with T1 cut-off at 0935 and I went off at 0955. Last person started at 1016 so they extended run cut-off until 16 minutes after midnight.

Bike was murder due to high winds and cold temps. Some people had shoe booties to keep feet warm. I bough arm warmers, ski cap for over ears, full gloves over riding gloves, wore my leg compression sleeves, long sleeve tech shirt under cycling shirt with newspaper under for a barrier for chest. Took outer gloves off around 40 mile mark. Did not stop at Special Needs as planned so completed the 112 miles straight away.

Took 15 minutes in T2 to settle down, get feelings back then slowly got moving. Marathon was worse ever. Took along my full finger gloves and cap since it was still cold. Some had face covered and today I can feel why. Hot chicken broth beginning at 7:00pm was much needed and welcomed.

Since I had not trained properly for the entire event due to 2 bike crashes, carpal tunnel surgery and being told I need a wrist joint replacement, right shoulder getting worse every day after being told I need a total shoulder joint replacement 2 years ago, knees causing issues for last 2 months and the wicked wind, the marathon was a shuffle fest.

With 1/2 mile left a 61yo guy passed me doing a nice jog. I didn't want this younger dude to beat this 64yo so I started to walk faster, then into a jog and finally a very rare for me run mode. I passed him as we began our finishing chute approach. The crowd really went crazy as I was flying by and catching up to much younger finishers. I couldn't even slap hands since I was going so fast.

A VERY LONG DAY and I am still aching right now. Turns out that the 138.2 was much harder than last year's 140.6.

I will never complain about a tough run again. :faint:

Well, I guess it's official: I will continue my habit of being totally undertrained for the races. I did a half marathon in September to try and improve my proof of time (and went from 5:01 expected finish time to 4:11 ), and the course went over and under A LOT of bridges. Silly me did all of them at full speed, so by the time I crossed the finish line my knees were aching. I took some time off to let them recover, did a short run, caught a cold, took some more time off - and then I chucked my common sense out of the window and did a looooong (13.75 miles) run. My knees were not happy so I couldn't train for yet another week. And now I can't get rid of the pain in my left knee. I don't think its the IT band, since my knee hurts "on the inside", underneath the knee cap (sort of) and not on the outside. I'm trying to give it rest, but "not training" just seems to get harder every day... :( I tried to go for a short jog yesterday, but had to cut it short after just 1.5 miles. At least the pain is never so bad that I can't keep running any more, it's more the long term damage I'm concernced with.

So, I changed my strategy from "being well-trained so that I can do Dopey and Star Wars without replacing character stops with medical tent stops" to "I will spend 16 hours travelling to get to Orlando, and for the registration fee I could have taken a nice and lazy vacation - why would I want to get off the race course as quickly as possible?" ::yes::

But at least I won't be starting from the last corral this time! :yay:

That's a tough stretch. Looks like you're keeping a fairly positive attitude about it. Enjoy the time in Disney - it's hard not to. Also, have you tried new running shoes to help with the knee pain - if not, it is certainly worth the investment to hit a true running store and let them fit you into the right shoes. A lot of times it is that simple.

I'm running in four different pairs of shoes: the two stabilizing ones (that I use for long runs) were properly fitted in a running store, one of the "normal" ones I bought at the recommendation of a running store guy and I just loved the last one because they're so comfortable. I try to use a different pair every time I go out to run. I have never had this kind of knee problems before, so I guess I really did hurt something during the half marathon in September. Unfortunately, the earliest doctor appointment I could get would be mid-December, and doing no training until then just doesn't seem like a good idea...

I started doing core strength training on Sunday (and now feel totally sore). Maybe that will help. At least it won't hurt, I guess.

I'm just hoping it will heal in time for Dopey - I REALLY want that Goofy medal!

Training check in. So how is everyone doing? Long runs should be getting up there in the 16 to 22 range. I'm on the low end of that and just completed a 16 yesterday. Stepping up to 18 then a race simulation 3, 6, 10, 20 consecutive days before tapering to race week. Feel pretty good at this point. I've been running for 12 solid years and had my first ever nose bleed yesterday at mile 9 of 16. Weird. Kept running and just dealt with it. Basically cut my breathing arsenal in half. All in all training is going well and I can't wait to navigate the races in the happiest place on earth.

Did my back-to-back 3/8/18 runs this weekend. I would say it went pretty well, but for the second half of that 18 I kept thinking "Why am I doing Dopey? This was a terrible idea!!" :rotfl:

I am honestly dreading the final 2 "long" weekends I have (4/9/19 & 2.5/5/10/20). I know I will get through them but I just cannot wait to be DONE. I think Dopey/Goofy will be a one and done thing for me. I'm glad I picked the Goofy 10th anniversary to try it though!

I did a similar combination of runs the last few days and I am totally dragging today. It's also probably due to the fact that I have cold I'm still recovering from. I feel like falling asleep, but I have to be at work so that's probably not a good idea.

Finding the time for all this running is getting tougher as my wife is out of town for the next month and I'm basically a single parent to two small kids until she's back at the end of December. I've got friends and family to help but it seems too selfish to keep asking over and over for people to watch my kids while I go running by myself for hours.

Oh well, enough moping. I have to keep going and it should start to feel better once the cold is gone. And a trip to WDW to look forward to does help too.

This weekend my plan was 3/6/12
I got in 3/6/9.. Figure that's better than nothing right? I was stuck on the treadmill today due to winds and rain, and just couldn't push through another 3 miles, so I stopped at 9.
I also just started a new workout program this past Friday which is really intense and my whole body has been pretty sore the past few days so I didn't wanna push too much.

I am planning a four day stretch in about 2 weeks of 2.5/5/10/20 and hoping the weather cooperates to get at least the last two runs done outside. I don't even mind colder temps but I can't do 25 mph winds and rain

I'm feeling exactly the same way! Dopey? What was I thinking?! After this, I think I'll just go back to half marathons. I'm much more comfortable with those. Lol!

Anyone think the waivers will be up by this weekend?

I am always anxious until I receive my waiver, because I'm afraid I won't actually be registered or something! :confused3:lmao:

Also, if you signed up through a 3rd party, do you get a waiver just like everyone else? I'm hoping for some reassurance that my brother's 5k bib actually exists!

I know what you mean!!

It's especially panicky if you can't find your name and it turns out there was a typo or something.

Legally he'd definitely have to sign something, I would think. I would guess it would be at the same link as everyone else but I've never bought a bib through a third party before...:confused3

I went back and found 2014's Marathon Weekend thread and corrals were officially posted on 12/11. Marathon Weekend was 12/8-12/12 (I think) so if that pattern holds we're looking at this week or next week. :)

If you mean a third party such as a charity group or travel provider, then yes, the waiver will appear exactly as if you signed up for yourself.
