Dopey 2015 Official Thread

Yes......walk as much as you can stand. I know in a race situation it can be difficult to do this but the key is to remember that your races are just starting. Conserve, conserve, conserve.

DH and I did our 13-mile training run this weekend. This is the longest training run we have ever done. We've run a few half marathons but always only trained up to 11, so that training run was pretty rough. We are running a half marathon in 2 weeks in another city just for a change of scenery during a training run (schedule for 15 that weekend). We are week behind on Galloway's plan.

We are only planning one "mini dopey" during our training. Just don't have time for more than that. So I'm hoping it will be enough.

Those that have run Dopey before, do you have any recommendations as far as the 5k and 10k to conserve energy for the half and full?

I run with ClewRunning and we have not done Dopey before but have done Goofy twice. Our goal both times was to run the half at a speed that let us talk and enjoy the entire race and finish with fuel in the tank. We also follow and 5/1 run/walk schedule which helps. Afterwards we focus on food/drink and rest (i.e. not going to the parks or running around, just laying around and relaxing). I think it has served us well and we plan a similar strategy for Dopey. I think even if you can string together 2,3,4 days during the week from time to time and run back to backs that will begin to train your body for that on race day. Good luck with training and stay strong!

For what it's worth on IT Band issues, I struggled with that for a couple years as well and after lots of reading and experimenting, I finally solved that problem by changing the way I exercised. I started focusing at least a couple days a week to strengthening my core, hips and glutes and it cured the IT issues. Wishing you tons of luck on the build-up!

Thanks for this. I did end up going to a doctor on Monday (more for the foot strain...and to get confirmation that I didn't do serious damage) and she said exactly what you did. Plus, I have flat feet. So boo to that.

Thanks again! :)

Well, I got my first 20 miles run today... on a treadmill. So BORING.. Rainy and windy weather outside. Tried to get the family to dress up as Mickey, Donald, and Goofy to simulate course conditions at Disney but with no luck... where is the family support. .LOL. Now starts the ice baths..

Ughhhh, I cannot imagine. I hope you at least cleared out the DVR or Netflix queue during that time.

I think it would have taken a real threat of death to get me to do 20 miles on a treadmill! I did my 8 miles in a downpour on Saturday and I LOVED it! It was refreshing and I loved splashing through puddles like a little kid ;)

If my gym had wi-fi, this would make a treadmill run a little more bearable! I need to cancel that membership.

Last couple of weeks have been some rain during the runs and I felt the same way, very invigorating and a nice change of pace. Running in the rain at 75 degrees = refreshing, running in the rain at 50 degrees = treadmill-envy.

Wow seriously, 20 on the treadmill is hardcore! And very cool that you are up to a 20 miler already...I'm not ready for that. We just finished our first 'simulation run' last week. We ran Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat 3/4/6/12 to get some distance back to back practice. It was a good reminder of why I need to practice with the consecutive running days...I'm still a little tired. Back on the road tomorrow!

Great job on the multi run day SmoothRunner. That's one of the hardest thing to do. You can break down so fast.. rest days are very important to get those leg strength back. My long run was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. IT 's all mental.. I just focused on doing 5 mile x 4 times with a few seconds to rest when resetting the treadmill . After I finished the second 5 miles ,I just focused on that I'm half way through it. Thinking about running 20 miles you start thinking '' I can't do this. ''

You couldn't be more right brother! When I can get out of my own head is when I'm my best. Thanks for the encouragement.

20 miles in one training session is way beyond my capabilities. Nicely done.

Always keep in mind that treadmill miles do not directly correlate to street miles. The time is still a constant, the effort expended to cover the distance is not equal. Easier on a dreadmill compared to street.

That's the first time I've seen "easier" used in conjunction with "20 miles"!

;)

Agreed - You can make it almost equal by raising the incline from zero to one. Still not the same, and the muscle usage is not the same, but a lot closer.

Boy do I hear you...LOL. I did raise the treadmill incline to 1 to account for the wind which you don't get on the treadmill.. I also have learned my treadmill is 10 to 15 seconds slower per mile than running on the street. But I traded off maybe little less distance on the treadmill for less compression on my legs. Hey... if anyone is looking for a good drink on your run. A friend got me hooked on half sport drink(Gatorade or PowerAde) and a can of green Monster drink split equally between 2 water bottles.. I keeps my energy up throughout the full run

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I am pretty sure they have changed the 5k and 10k courses for 2015. Not a ton but there are some changes if my the new certifications are correct they changed them.

Question for the group. Is anyone trying to PR any race within Dopey or is your goal just to finish all feeling good. No PR goals for me - although being my first Dopey it will be a PR as a whole. I've done Goofy twice, most recently in 2012. Caught the flu prior to the race and both runs were miserable (sick, no energy, very tough). So....my goal is to be healthy and finish all four races feeling good.

I know physically it's easier, but mentally it would be SO MUCH TOUGHER for me! I probably wouldn't even finish it!

I am hoping to PR the marathon simply because I only have done one other and it was awful. So I hope that even with taking it easy I will still PR :thumbsup2

I know people who go for a PR during Goofy or Dopey, but it's not very common. I think most people like to enjoy the ambiance and the Disney spectacle. That said, I did PR during the half at Goofy two years ago, but that isn't my normal approach. I just happened to be in great shape after a full PR six weeks prior and decided around mile 8 to just bust out & go for it. Normally, I go nice & steady for all the races and stop for lots of pictures, and a beer, along the way.

I have no intension to try for a PR in any of the Official WDW Marathon Weekend Dopey events; however, the unofficial Inaugural FW Half Marathon on Monday will be a PR, the unofficial Inaugural Dream 10K on Tuesday will be a PR and the Inaugural Castaway Cay Challenge 5K on Wednesday completed with DW will be a PR.

So there will be 3 PRs during my Palindrome Challenge. :thumbsup2
