This is just something I've noticed over my years of working retail in a hardware store. When I'm at service desk, I have to greet everyone that walks in. I've noticed that about half will say hello, a quarter will ignore me, and a quarter will acknowledge my presence (look right at me) but ignore me.

I know when I go out shopping, I always say hello to whoever greets me at the door in a store (if there is someone). Very rarely do I not. What do the rest of you do? :)

If I'm on my phone then I'll ignore, but most of the time I'll say hi and make eye contact.

Even if the greeter doesn't speak to me, I'll speak to them...always have.

I ALWAYS respond back. I've worked in customer service long enough to know not be be rude, and a lot of people are. It's utterly appalling.A lot of the time, I'll be the first one to say hello. If someone asks me about my day, or how I'm doing, I ask them the same. If they wish me a good day/morning/evening/night, I will wish them the same in return.

I think it's really bleeped up to ignore someone, for any reason. I can't even tell you what I think of the people who are on their phone when ordering or paying or the like.

But I guess all I can do is be as nice as I can to people when I talk to them face to face and let karma take care of all the jerks.

I always say hello back and smile and say something as the situation allows. More often than not, I'm in a new store so I ask for the general direction of where to look.

I always greet and ask how their day is going. But the big issue, is that sometimes I don't hear them, or I question if it's ME they are even talking to. I guess I don't want to feel stupid and say "fine, thanks" when the question is not even for me!

I respond 99.9% of the time because I realize it's required by your employers, but find it a waste of time on your part and mine.

I'm usually running my list of items that I need through my head, so I normally don't even hear if someone is talking to me.

I also work in retail, so when I'm not working I avoid contact with people as much as possible.

Yeah.... I'm one of THOSE :lmao:

Often I do smile and say hi but I will admit that I have a day where I just mutter and keep my head down. It isn't because I am ignoring them on purpose but rather that I have had a bad day, sick or trying to remember why I even came into the store.

What I don't like about what the OP has to do is if I am in front of the person interacting with them and they interrupt what they are saying/dealing with me to say hello to someone else. To me,that's rude.

I speak to people who speak to me but I do not initiate most of the time. While I'm working, I greet each student who boards my bus. Some of the kids look right through me. It gives me the creeps that they have no social skills. If I were a stranger, it would be totally different but they see me for almost an hour a day and do not respond to me.
Rude? Clueless? I don't know the answer but I keep talking to them everyday.

Someone you know? that I think is rude.
Now people I see all the time and/or know, I definitely respond to. Well, unless I'm having a REALLY bad day...then no one wants to talk to me anyway. :rotfl:

Just wanted to add that I am the one poster that clicked 'never'. It was an accident due to fat fingers on my iPhone!

I actually always respond to greeters. Sorry to mess up the poll

I so agree!!!!!!!!:thumbsup2:worship:
I cannot stand people who can't put the phone down for 2 seconds. Rude rude rude! I say hello or smile. So many people have terrible social skills these days.

I will always acknowledge the greeter. Usually, it's by speaking back. However, if I'm in the middle of a conversation with someone (I'm talking about "in person" conversations here with my shopping companions, not phone calls), sometimes I'll smile and nod or raise my hand to say hello instead of speaking. Overall, I like being greeted at a store, but there are times when it's "interrupting" a conversation that's already going on.

I'm pretty shy, but I will always at least smile back or mutter hi. I used to hate it when workers engaged me like that, but I'm used to it now.
