but I have snorkeled in several places in the Carribean but my best friend and I for our "Mommy's away" trip are considering a snorkeling excursion in Nassau.

1. I grew up a "Child of the Jaws Movies" and am paranoid of sharks. It seems as if you hear about them a lot in the Bahamas......my DH is laughing at me but what are the chances of running into one? For some reason I never worry about sharks in Cozumel even though I know they are around the globe?

2. If it is ok to go which I am sure I am being silly can anyone recommend an excursion?

Thanks@

When we first started snorkling about 12 years ago in Key west my husband almost bumped into a shark when he turned the corner of the reef. The shark was unimpressed but I am sure my husband added to the acidity of the ocean that day if you know what I mean:smooth:

It took me about three years to get him to snorkle again and wouldn't you know we saw another shark. This time it was about 30 feet away and once again could care less about us. Other than those two times out of probably 60 snorkling adventures I have never seen one. It is a possibility since they are in the water (unless you are in a netted environment which I believe castaway cay is) but trust me the sharks could care less about you.

I too grew up with Jaws infact part of it was filmed at Cape Cod where I have spent my summers since infancy. I would not worry about a shark though. You know, there were probably sharks in the water where you snorkled before but you didn't know it because they avoid humans. We really don't taste good :)

Don't worry and have a great time!

I'm a "Child of the Jaws Movies" too and I feel your "pain". I want to try snorkeling but I'm paranoid about other fish down there....I just don't know. I think I have to get myself prepared that it will be OKAY and nothing is going to eat me!!!! ROFL

So don't be feeling silly...I've been going through similar thoughts for our cruise in July!!!! I'd be interested in hearing about where they located, how sparsed they hopefully are, etc also.

I am trying to remember exactly.... I know that not all of the snorkeling around Nassau is the greatest... But I read in an old Guide to the Bahamas book that the snorkeling at, I think it is called, Athol Island is supposed to be really great!

If you want to try to be the safest, stay right with the snorkeling group... I hear they do not like groups... And, snorkel mid-day if possible..... (Extra sunscreen!!!!) I have always heard that most sharks feed in the early morning, and then again in the evening.

Hope you have a great time snorkeling!

Yes! I have heard about an incredible excursion...

Go ashore and ask for a man named 'Quint'... he runs excursions from a boat called 'Orca'

Very reasonable rates too...

<))))))><

and still havent seen a shark and we have looked for them and even hired an excursion specifically target to nurse and reef sharks and still nothing! We have alot of dives and still we cant seem to run into one. We snorkeled ALOT before kids and must have snorkeled about 100+ times and never saw one either. Sharks for the most part are very scared of humans and the only thing I have heard is to make sure you stay out of the water if it is that time of the month. I know that they tell you not to dive on your period just because it is an attractant but I have several friends who dive and none of them have ever seen a shark either. Your chance is pretty slim but I do understand freaking out about it. That is one reason I drug my feet about getting certified but after 40-50 dives still havent seen one yet!

ROFLMAO >>^^..^^<<

I think your buddy "Quint" had a little problem on the last excursion. I seem to remember the Orca took on a little water the last time he and Brody took her out... :smooth:

Quint and Orca!!!! ROLFF!!!

Always great to wake up with a hot cup of coffee and a good laugh from the DIS Boards!

Thanks!

Rae

P.S. - I stay out of the water because of JAWS also. It didn't bother me til I was in Hawaii with a "dear one" and he grabbed my leg while I was underwater in a "jaws" like grip. Needless to say, I had a few choice words for him after I kicked him unmercifully and got out of the "shark grip" and realized it was him. Now - I stand on the shore and maybe let my toes get wet!

Don't think Quint is in shape to be driving anything right now!! and the Orca may need a few repairs.

In reality, more people are killed each year by jellyfish than sharks.

I can't remember the numbers, but there was a show on one of the cable channels, "World's Most Dangerous Animals" or something like that, that had all the statistics.

Does anyone recall seeing jellyfish or a Portugese Man-of-War while on a snokeling excursion?

Rae, I'm truly surprised! A native New Yorker afraid of a shark? Heck, sharks shudder at the thought of a New York rat. And EVEN a New York rat won't cross an angry native-New York female... no matter if they live in any of the five boroughs or Indiana.
