Donald's Defiant Dashers (AKA Triple D's/Duckies/The Ducks) Dashing into 2010

Was in VT over the weekend and had my 8 miler scheduled. Was worried about the hills but went to the Rec Path at Stowe. Absolutely gorgeous - shade, cool weather, great views . . . the best long run ever! I dare say (and NEVER understood this when others said it), it felt good! 11:24 pace - I'm not speedy, but I did it! :yay:

that sounds lovely!! I don't mind sweating but the heat and humidity this summer have kept me back from running longer runs.. I really felt good when I was in Maine so I know exactly how you feel:woohoo:

Keep it up!!! October is coming quickly!!!:cool1:

Have a dumb question (to which I should know the answer).

Do you sweat more when dehydrated? :confused3

It was hot & humid yesterday during my run, but not nearly as much as it has been. I was dripping after just 4 miles at a 11 minute pace. It wasn't a hard run, but I was sweating so much it confused me.

In the summer, all of the time! Soaked, and I don't consider myself a sweater - but in the summer, all bets are off!

Hey Ducks. We were out of town over the weekend and then came down with a pretty bad stomach bug at the end of our trip. So this week has been rough and definitely no running for me. I can barely stand up straight. I'm hoping I can get back at it and have a great running week next week!

Hi everyone,
Glad to see everyone has been doing good with the running. Liz, hope you feel better soon.
I had a great weekend at WDW with Debbie, if you didn't see my posts on FB, we got a free upgrade to club level at the Contemporary Resort:cool1:. Free food and drinks put out through out the day,it was awesome.:thumbsup2
I found a cool Donald shirt for the race, but the screen printing was too thick to wear.

The back of the shirt has Donald's backside on it.

I did 2 - 5 mile runs this week. I have been having problems with the gps function on my phone, Monday it had me running 200 miles in an hour through Indiana:confused3, I swear I never left Michigan. Tonight it had me running 5 miles in the other direction. Has anyone have similar problems with there gps programs for their phone or Garmin watches?

Has everyone seen the pictures of the Wine & Dine medal? It looks pretty cool, if you needed a little push to continue training, that will do it.

Have a good weekend everyone.
Joe

I don't know the answer to that one, but I'll be interested to find out! :) I live where it is very hot and humid in the summer. When I run I sweat to the point that I have to carry a baby washcloth in the back of my shorts to that I can pull it out and wipe off my face and eyes every so often so that I can see.

Same here! I wear a terry-lined visor and I still need a cloth to wipe the sweat out of my eyes. I seem to sweat a lot more when it's humid...or maybe it's just that when it's dry the sweat evaporates quickly.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. I did my first 5K today, which was exciting for me. Even though I was so slow I got passed by a mom running with two kids in a double stroller. But I finished it,and I figure having a slow time only means there is room for improvement.

You did it!!! Yay! I'm a walker, love it, but get passed all the time. Although, there are occasional that I actually pass a jogger.

In my opinion it is never about where you finished, but that you finished. There are so many people in todays society who would never even take that first step, so I say CONGRATULATIONS to you.

I have come the realization that I will never be the fastest out on the course, because there is always someone younger and faster, so I do it for me now and it seems like you are doing the same thing, so keep it up!!!! GOOD JOB!!!!!

I have been there. when it happened to me, I wanted to cry at first but then I thought, I am moving forward and this is a big step. I came in dead last and was passed by a 70 year old man and a boy!!

I put that behind me and am still plugging along at a pace(I wouldn't say fast pace) but each day I get stronger.

Good for you!!! Be proud of yourself!!! next step, get back out there and run!!!

Happy Sunday Ducks! I'm still not back to working out after being out of town and then sick for the past 7 days and counting....grrrrr It's one of those bad stomach bugs that goes away graaaaaaadually. :sad2: But tomorrow I am going to do something even though I won't be 100% yet. Either a short run or a short bike, we'll see.

Now to catch up with you all... :)

... I also have a question to ask one of you running experts. I am doing a walk/jog combo of 3 min/2 min on the treadmill and outside. I have noticed that when I am walking on the treadmill my shins hurt so I have to slow down a little or I find myself holding onto the handle. At first I thought I was walking too fast, but my pace is the same outside as on the treadmill, but my shins don't hurt when I am outside. And they don't hurt either place when I jog. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong, unless it's something with my stride that's off when I walk. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I really think my form is different on the tm then outside. And I think it's worse on the tm. I wish I never had to run on the tm, but I do, so I have to cope with whatever happens. It's just that a lot of the issues I've had have happened from tm runs...hmmmm. Of course I am not sure, never will be probably. But yeah, that's what I think, for me anyway.

... Liz - I signed up for the "Canadian Derby Edmonton 10K" on 21 August. Now I've got an intermediate race to train for before the half in October. ...

Got it added. Good luck!!

... As for me I've had some ups and downs lately. I'll cover the downs first: My father was told he needed to register for the heart transplant list and my father-in-law was informed that he needs to have triple bypass surgery. So thats been kind of crazy. Now for the ups: I have lost 32 lbs. (Still need to lose another 32 to make it to my goal weight.), I set a PR in a 5k last night 30'02" (I so wanted to be under 30'00"), and for the past 5 weeks I have basically done nothing but run hills (Which has helped me in my races). ...

I'm sorry to hear about your father and father in law's issues. Best wishes to them.

Great job on the weight loss and the fast 5K!

... Liz: I wanted to try a pair of those South African socks when I first read about them from the running store I go to, but $9.99 for a pair:scared1:. While at the Ann Arbor Art Fair this weekend the running store had them at 10% off. I bought a pair and tried them today, they are the MOST comfortable socks I have ever worn, I wish I would have bought more. ...

Aren't they wonderful?! I don't plan to buy anything else in the future.

I feel like I had a REAL breakthrough this morning. My plan all week was to run 7.5 miles today as my "long run". I've been mentally preparing for this, trying to figure out how I was going to gut it out that last 1.3 miles more than last week (10K/6.2 miles last week).

So I did what ALL the books say to do...start out really slow and strive for a negative split. So I ran my first 2.5 miles and averaged 10:45 min/mile. Pretty slow for me. But amazingly?!? I felt great! Like I hadn't really run anything so far! So I sped up my next 2.5 miles and averaged 10:30 min/mile for the total 5 miles! Then I sped up just a bit more on my last 2.5 miles and got my overall average down to 10:17 min/mile for the whole run. I felt so good at that point, I ran out to 8 miles total today! Woo hoo! It felt good and pretty effortless. Absolutely amazing! I couldn't have done this without the Garmin. What a great tool. And what a great confidence booster this run was. Now I'm fully past the point of "Can I really run that half marathon?" to "I can really run that half marathon!". And those books? They were right. It works. :rolleyes1 ...

That's awesome!!! WTG!

Hi Everyone!

So the 5k that I did in July was amazing! It was great to run for my grandmother and for Hospice! I finished in 34:55 and was 68th overall (and 2nd in my age group!)

And while I was in Germany last week, I got to go out for a run with some of the guys who were there for the same thing I was...and It was so much fun! Getting to run through a city on the other side of the world with new friends, great! :) The run was 3 miles or so and we did it in 27 minutes (which is faster than I normally trot along!)

Congrats on the great 5K! And sounds like a fun (and fast) run in Germany!

Howdy Ducks!

My husband returned home from deployment last week so on Friday I finally got the chance to run outside for the first time! :cool1: I didn't measure distance or speed - just wanted to see how it felt. I think it went well. Definitely takes more effort to slow my speed down. Next time I run I will hopefully be able to tell how fast I'm going.

One thing was different from running outside over the treadmill - my thighs were so sore!! I'm guessing it's because it takes more effort to propel yourself forward than when you're on the treadmill.

This morning I finally utilized the gym here at our development and got on the bike for a bit. I want to start cross-training again and I think biking is a great option for me. I really enjoyed it.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! :goodvibes

YAY for running outside and using the bike!

I think you sweat less when dehydrated...I believe it's a warning sign of it. I sweat like I'm raining when it's humid out. lol

Great shirt! But yeah, sounds too hot.

No problems with my Garmin like that. That's funny though...5 miles the other way. lol

Woohoo! Congrats on your first 5K!! :) You did it, that's what matters! And you're right, now you have a goal to meet for next time.

Oh one more thing. Sounds like meeting at tent "D" before the race is the (or at least a) plan huh? So are we sure that we can even get to tent D before the race?? I just don't remember from before the January Half seeing where the meet tents were or if they were available to us. I know we walked right out to them after the race. Oh and of course this race doesn't start in Epcot anyway...

And I have no problem quacking. :teeth: :donald: I'm goofy! Wait, that's confusing things... lol

Hey Ducks!

I just returned from a week-long trip to the US. I went to see my Doc, who in the MOST professional way, rolled her eyes at the treatment plan that the Canadian doctors have me on for my cardiac event. When I arrived at her office, my BP was 90 over 60. She asked me if I felt okay, or if I felt light headed. She also gave me instructions to get off all the meds these guys have me on. I told her I was training for a half marathon. Her response? "Great! Keep it up!". So I'm now officially under her care and treatment and have a clean bill of health. :cool1:

I then went to visit fam in New Mexico and ran two - 5 milers at 7500 feet. That was tough! And my niece took me lap swimming one day (she used to be on the HS swim team), so I got some good cross-training in.

I've got my 10K race in two weeks and I feel just about ready for it.

Carissa - So glad your hubby is back from deployment! Thanks for all that you and your family do for all Americans.

Maddykins - Yep, I sweat like a pig. When I finished my 5 miler at my sister's house, she thought I had thrown water on myself. Um, no...it's sweat. Everyone is different.

Liz - Sorry to hear you're not feeling 100%. You still have 8 weeks, so all things are possible! You can do this!

About the meet. Looks like Tent D is the plan. Should we have a post-race back-up plan?

Have a GREAT week, Ducks! And be Mighty in all that you do!:yay:

Hello Duckies! I have been off the boards for a bit, but in that time I have run in three races, a 5K, a 3.5 miler, and a 4 miler. Placed 2nd in my age group in two of them. The 3.5 mile race was called the Corporate Challange, about 200 companies here on LI do it every year around this time, and there are over a thousand participants, a good number of them walkers. Then we have a big party afterwards. And I rode my bike to the event, about 35 miles. (I did arrange a ride home, do not want to do that many miles in the dark!)
And it always seems to be extremely hot at this race, and I am like Renee, I was totally drenched. (and not just from the water I poured on myself at the water stops)

See you all under the Big D! (in the not so distant future)

Good evening Ducks...I JUST rode my bike 5 miles. I was so tired today still but I couldn't stand the thought of the day ending without doing SOMEthing. So I got on and planned to do a short, easy bike. Turned out I felt great on there and went ahead and did my usual ride. I go 5 miles in 20 minutes, and it has me going from resistance of 1 to 5 and then back down. It's a workout that actually has me breathing harder than when I run. So it's good crosstraining I think!

Yeah I think a post race back up (or non back up) plan is a good idea! Any thoughts??

Sounds like you had some great races! When I read "...35 miles." I instantly thought, did he ride home too?! :)

woohoo, the Big D! :yay:

Hi Ducks - I am here. Trying to get back into my training mode - its been hard to get started and stay at it this year. But now its down to crunch time with it being only 22 weeks till Goofy - YIKES!!!

I won't be able to make Wine and Dine but wanted to let those that are - I see you are planning on meeting at the D tent - most of the time the entire WISH team will meet at the W tent so you are all welcome to meet at the W tent and possible hook up with other WISH team members!!! Its nice to be part of our small Duck team but its also nice to be part of the bigger WISH team. Just a thought. I am sad I am going to be missing it. I have done all the inagural races since TOT and this will be the first one I am missing :-(

Happy Tuesday Ducks!

I ran today for the first time since Thursday July 29th. I did 3 miles at 5mph (on the treadmill, as usual). It was tough! My body is still so tired. I really wanted to do 4 miles but I had to stop at 3, I was wiped. Per my original plan my long run for this week was supposed to be 7 miles. I'm not sure I can still do that...it may have to be only 5, maybe 6. I'll be doing it on Friday so we'll see.

Tricia I'm sorry you won't be doing W&D. But at least you have Goofy to look forward to (and work hard for) over the next 5 months! :)
