Donald's Defiant Dashers (AKA Triple D's/Duckies/The Ducks) Dashing into 2010

Thanks for everyone's feedback about eating before the 10 PM W&D 1/2 marathon. I know there's no real science to it, so opinions are always welcome.

I went to the local running store yesterday to get educated help in purchasing the correct shoe for me. I've always worn Asics with stability control (Gel series), but I also use an orthodic, so I was OD'ing in the support area. I ended up buying a Brooks shoe, totally on "this one feels the best". I ran 5 miles in the Brooks this morning on my treadmill...ended up with a water blister the size of a quarter on my insole. So those shoes went back to the running store today. I traded them for a pair of Asics Cumulus 11's. We'll see how I do in them later this week, after the water blister mellows out.

The weather is getting a bit nicer up here, but I'm a cold wussie when it comes to running outside. 50 degrees with wind is not good for me. I need it a bit warmer. So I'll wait it out.

Next weekend, I'm heading to Jasper National Park with a girlfriend, so I'll have to add a little more running in my week to make up for what I'll miss when I'm gone. We'll see how well that goes...:rolleyes1

Hope all the Ducks have a GREAT week!

Well I have been a little behind on my postings here. Can't help it though the weather here has been absolutely perfect. Got a lot of yard work done this weekend, but still have about half the yard left to do, but it is the easy part. Spent Saturday morning out with my son at Soccer practice and then went out to Busch Gardens for the afternoon.

The doc still has me on a no run regiment, I am about ready to go nuts from not being out on he road, but I am being good and listening to the doc for now. Been hitting the weights pretty regularly though. Need to pick up swimming, but hate the half hour drive to the pool. The one problem i have found with not running is I want to eat like EVERYTHING. Go hence needing to start swimming.

Spending the rest of the week on vacation and getting ready for my teacher certification test on Saturday up in NYC. What a great way to spend a vacation.

Well I think I am caught up with the happenings in my life. I hope everyone is having a great time and hopefully the weather stays nice in your neck of the woods.

Hello Ducks! Sure was a great weekend up here.

Deb, I plan on visiting a real running shop soon for a better pair of shoes.

Joe, I will be looking for you. I tend to be out by 6:30 - 7, and there are not many out then.

Tim, hope things get better for you!

Renee, Blisters are no fun. But Jasper sounds like a nice trip. And I will probably go to Big River again before the half if you want to join me.

Dan, what does the doc say about biking? Have a great trip to NY. I will be at the Bowery Ballroom on Friday.

Today they were predicting rain, but luckily it only rained around lunchtime. So I got to ride to and from work rain free. I think tomorrow will be more rain all day.

Have a good week!

Augie

The fam is not coming up to NYC with me now, what is the Bowery Ballroom?

Howdy Ducks!
Hope everyone is having a nice start to their week. Got a little excitement in the Reynolds house this week, DD (Steph) applied to the WDW college program last week and has a phone interview on the 25th. If she gets accepted she will be there in the fall and will be able to see the wine & dine half (if she's not working). This will be a great experience for her and best of all an opportunity for some cast member exclusive pins.:cool1:
I read today that an Ethiopian runner just got a world record for running a half marathon in 58 minutes:scared1:, that's just under 4:45 a mile. I know what to shoot for now.;)
everyone have a good week!:donald:

How do you experienced runners feel a couple weeks after an event?:mickeyjum

Sounds like fun! Last May I ran a half one Sunday and another the following week to no ill effect. In the first I was pacing a friend doing the full and in the second I ran with a friend running her first, so neither was a strain.

It can definitely be done but you might consider one race as a fun training run and the other as a race. Two all-out efforts two weeks apart might be more than your body is ready for.

How long you've been running, your overall training volume, and the length of the races all plays into it as well. If the races are shorter than what you're ultimately training for, it's a lot less a big deal.

Either way, let your body tell you.

Big River? I had to Google this. Sorry, I'm not native Canadian. I'm a short-term transplant American here in Alberta. Big River in Saskatchewan? What exactly is there and what do you do there? I may be interested!

BTW - We had a fresh, light layer of snow this morning! Didn't really get above freezing all day here. No daffodils or tulips in sight yet...

Wow, that's fantastic! I honestly cannot even imagine running that fast.

Hey Ducks. I haven't been posting here much lately because I haven't been running. :( My last run was the virtual on the 14th, before that it had been 3 weeks. My son doesn't like going in the jogging stroller anymore, so that has become an issue. We have not gotten our inside treadmill repaired yet, but I am putting an end to that soon, I can't wait anymore, I NEED it.

Also, I am realizing that my hip issue may need a doctor visit. I hate to admit that, I don't want to get bad news. I thought it was fine, but I'm realizing that it gets sore when I sit cross-legged for too long or when I sleep on my right side for too long (it's my right hip). Those things never happened before. I just hate going to the doctor for several reasons... :sad2:

Oh, it looks like we've got another new team member heading our way....welcome LadyDooley! Come join in! :)

Ugh. I know what you mean about going to the doctor. I put it off as long as I can. I hope it turns out to be nothing (although that can be frustrating too because you want to know what's wrong).

I just ran for 20 minutes straight. I was supposed to do 25, but I was having a hard time making the 20. Baby steps. :thumbsup2

Hope everyone is having a good week! :cheer2:

Joe That is an insane pace. I don't think I even drive that fast :drive:

Liz Go see the doc, I don't like going either, but it is for our own good. I have come to the realization that my body is not as young as it used to be and doctors visits are going to be a common thing as I try to maintain an active lifestyle.

Got a good weight workout at the gym today, going to try the swimming thing tomorrow. Been a long, long time since I did any swimming we will see how that goes, hopefully I can get through one lap without drowning :lmao:

On a side note, if anyone has been to WDW during Christmas what is the best place to eat at on Christmas day. My wife wants to do Cinderella's castle, but I have heard to stay away from MK on Christmas day.

Yeah Carissa :dancer: A little less is better than nothing!!!!

That's how I feel! :thumbsup2

Hope the swimming goes well for you. We have a pool here in our development, but it's only open during the summer months. I try to swim as much as I can when I take the boys, but it's hard to do laps and try to watch them as well. It's such a great form of exercise though!

That is a fast pace. I watched the NY Marathon a few years ago, and at mile 8, I think, the leaders were flying by. And at this years DW Marathon, I was on the bridge over by the Swan when the first runners came by, and the leader was doing a pretty good pace. Way beyond my pace. I will be happy to keep a below 8 minute pace.

Liz Hope the hip gets better. I am also one for putting off visits as long as I can.

Dan, the Bowery Ballroom is a concert hall on the corner of Bowery and Delancy. I am hoping to see Perpetual Groove on Friday. Not sure what time I will make it in to the city that night, they will not start until 10. Have fun swimming! Great exercise. There is a pool here at work but I do not use it as much as I should. but if i did, then i would have to start doing tris...

Renee, I was referring to Big River Grill at BW, where I will probably have my pre-half meal. It worked out well at the last race (even with a beer)

More rain here today, so no riding.

Liz It sounds as if it is time to get medical help. Have you considered going to your physio? That is what I'll do when I have an issue, especially as my md is very hard to see. You might be luckier.

My usual order is massage therapist, physio then md. Hope you get fixed up soon!

LadyDooley:welcome:

Liz, As one who also puts off going to the Doc as long as possible, I think it's time for you to go.:goodvibes

Hello Ducks!!! Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been battling the injury bug (shin) since WDW Half marathon. But I finally got the ok from the doctor today to start running again. Of course I received the typical doctor talk: "it's ok to start back running but take it easy for the first couple weeks." So back to the grind. However I do need to change some races that I was going to run. I'm no longer running the Rumpshaker 5k (3/27) or the High Country 5k (4/10).

Hope everyones races and training keeps going well.

Okay, now I'm embarrassed...

But it's funny that you recommended that one. I had penciled in The Big River Grill with a question mark before I even posed the question here about the 1/2 marathon pre-eating. My brother and I will be staying at the Boardwalk Villas and the BRG just seems like a good place to get a simple, unexotic meal before the run. We'll do exotic the week after the race at the F&W Festival! I think we'll plan on eating there that day (assuming I make the race...) and if we do, we'll work at meeting up with you!

Liz - I must admit, I've been in massive denial for the past month or so about a little injury. I've got this pain that runs down the outside of my thigh, through my knee and down my shin/calf. It doesn't hurt too bad when I run. But the pain throbs at night after I've slept for 3-4 hours and it stiffens up. Wakes me up and I have to walk up and down the hall to loosen it up a bit so I can go back to sleep. Also hurts if I sit at my desk for more than 30-40 minutes. I've been reading about IT band injuries on the Internet, but I keep telling myself I don't have that injury because there's one or two descriptors that are slightly different than my experience. Can you say DENIAL?!?

So I've decided to do some of the simple exercises recommended and back off the running a little bit and see if things don't get better.

Go see the doc so you can run again. Don't allow him to tell you, "Well, if running makes the injury worse, then don't run!" That's an unacceptable answer (and I've gotten it before). Make him help you heal so you can do what you love to do again!

Carissa - You go girl! You're my inspiration many days! Really, you are! Keep it up! 20 minutes is just about over the peak. What gives out at 20 minutes? Your legs or your lungs? If your lungs are making you stop (you're too winded) then slow down a bit. You'll get to the point in running where you're never winded. Eventually, you'll be able to go for as long as your legs hold out. If your legs are giving out, then you just need to keep strenthening them. Taking a little weight helps me, too.;)
