I think we've decided to stay at the cabins at Fort Wildnerness, which will be a first for us. I'm really excited about it! :woohoo:

You THINK you've decided?!? Hello! It's already in your signature! Yes. You've decided.

And YAY! So happy for your fam. That'll be fun planning and looking forward to. That's really more than half the fun. And it's great that Naval retirement is just around the corner, too.

Well, as with anything Disney trip related, changes can happen at any time! ;)

Hey Ducks!

I’m finally home for a breather. I’ve been on the road so much this year. I’m really growing tired of the travel. And just when I think it’s gonna let up, it hits again. I’ll fly out this Wednesday again and will be on the road for another three weeks. Illinois, Canada, Louisiana.

Anyhoo, here’s my Princess Half Marathon short report, a month late:

Overall, we had a BLAST! Dressing up as the Fairy Godmothers and wearing wings, hats, and carrying wands wasn’t an issue at all. I really thought it would be distracting and uncomfortable, but not at all! I was Meriweather, my niece was Flora, and my sister was Fauna. I put a picture up over on FB. I’m not bragging, but we were cute, thanks to my sister’s creative abilities.

We were all corralled in A, so that gave us plenty of time for picture stopping. The marching band we passed in the first mile playing “Rocky” was cool! We got our pics with Captain Jack and the big gaggle of boys on the way to the MK. As we departed them, the guys kept throwing kisses at us. My niece and sister kept fighting over who the kisses were being thrown at. The crowds at the T&TC all recognized us, waved, and even called to us by name. We snapped a few shots going down Main Street and a few in Tomorrowland. Got a photo with the Mad Hatter in Fantasyland. Around the corner, we snapped a picture of Minnie right behind the castle. Then we ran through the castle. Lined up for a pic in front of the castle. And that’s when it happened. Our camera broke! The lens wouldn’t come out anymore. It wouldn’t power up. Arghhhhh!!! RIGHT in front of the castle! Can you believe it?!? We were soooo bummed after that. It kinda took the wind out of our sails for most of the race. We really tried hard to brush it off, but it just wasn’t happening. We snapped a few pics with characters with the Brightroom guys. But it just wasn’t the same.

At mile 7 or 8, back behind the monorail resorts, there was a little obscure accordion band on the side of the road. Maybe 10-14 players. Some sitting in folding chairs. Some standing. They just seemed out of place. But not to me and my sister. You see, our Dad played the accordion all his life. It was the joke and punch line in our family. And there was this band. Out of nowhere. If you recall, Dad died in early November last year. There was one gentleman in the band with his white shirt sleeves rolled up, just like Dad used to roll them when he played. My sister and I had a good cry for about ¼ mile in that section.

Then we got to mile 12-1/2, near Mousegears in Epcot. And for some reason, all of a sudden, my skirt elastic gave out! I had six extra inches of waistline that I didn’t know what to do with. I tried tucking it in the back of my running shorts, but it would only stay for more than 10-15 running steps. I fought with that skirt all the way to the finish line. At the end, my sister said, “Okay, so maybe I shouldn’t have used that elastic left over from Grandma’s sewing supply stash”. Yes, Grandma died in 1998. The elastic was probably 20-30 years old when she died. So I was running with 40 year old elastic, holding up my skirt! We laughed pretty hard over that one. Funny thing is, after we washed them and air dried them back at the villa, it fit perfectly again. So I’m still not sure what happened. I must admit, my finish line photos are pretty funny. I just let go of it for the last few hundred feet and prayed that it wouldn’t be wrapped around my ankles by the finish line. It wasn’t, but it certainly was riding pretty low when we crossed. Too funny!

On Tuesday, we all decided to wear our matching Princess race shirts and our Fairy Godmother hats to Animal Kingdom for the day. Again, everyone recognized us and laughed with us. The first ride we got on was EE. Neither my sister nor my niece had ever ridden it. When we got to the dark, backward section, my blue Meriweather hat blew off my head. Never to be seen again. I guess I didn’t have enough hair to hold the clips well. We grieved over that loss for a while and reported it missing to a few CM’s. My sister and niece wore their hats until they couldn’t stand the incessant question: “Where is Meriweather?!?” from people. So they finally took their matching hats off. I felt so bad. The hat didn’t survive, because it was never returned to me. WDW would have called or shipped it, had they found it. But it hasn’t shown up. I’m hoping my sister makes me another one for my birthday this year, just for the memories.

So that was our trip. So much fun. A little drama. Great memories. A few heartaches. But isn’t that what most Disney trips are made of?

Next one on the books for me? W&D Half in November, followed closely behind it with a cruise on the Magic with Mom right after Thanksgiving.

Immediately after the Princess, I started having problems with my IT band. I’m still struggling, but have stopped running for a few weeks. Using rest, ibuprofen, and the side roller as treatment. I think it’s working. I’ve got plenty of time to get ready for the W&D, so I’m not worried.

Need to go get ready for my next round of travels. I’ll keep in touch and continue to lurk this thread. Keep up the good work, Ducks!

Oh Ducks, I've been away far too long.

Between dealing with a never-ending, nasty cold and taking over my mother's finances, I just lost all motivation. Words cannot describe how disappointed I am. I had come so far, and now I've lost all the wonderful progress I'd been so proud of.

But enough whining...

I have a new plan and a new goal.

As I've posted before, my initial goal was to run the Chick-fil-a 5K on April 21st. Seeing as I've missed more than a month of training and will essentially be starting over, there's no way that I can make that goal. Fortunately, as if by divine intervention, my bag of chicken-y goodness I grabbed while running errands last week included a race form that listed the dates of all the area Chick-fil-a 5Ks, and I realized that the last race of the series is scheduled 8 weeks from now. I CAN DO THAT!

Also, in the time when I've been busy, sick, and worrying about saving my mother's home, I picked up a copy of Galloway's 5K/10K book. I was struggling mightily with the quick progression of C25K, so I feel that the Galloway program better fits my current level.

It will not be easy, but I know that I must keep my eye on the prize. I'm going to find some new and exciting trip reports to follow, and I will be running through that castle wearing a tiara next February.

Hi everyone!

I had a good 9 mile run yesterday, the legs and foot felt good. Debbie ran 8 miles today, so she signed up for the Martian half marathon on April 14th. She wants the martian head medal. I'm looking forward to doing a non Disney half, to concentrate on just running instead of a character picture opportunity.

We signed up for another race tonight, the Twinkie 5k, next Saturday. We did this run last year, we have to eat a twinkie just before the race and another one at the halfway point. We get to take 2 minutes off our final time for eating 2 twinkies. Two of my favorite things, Hostess snacks and running:love:.

Everyone getting back into training, make sure you take it slow, you don't want any setbacks.

Liz: I made and shipped some signs to your area last week, so if you pass The Highlands or Emerald Bay apartment communities and see a "Under New Management" banner, those are mine.

Have a good week Ducks! :hippie:

Joe

Keep your spirits up! it is easier now than it was when you very first began..

As for me, not much new here.. I wanted to post pictures of the Princess run but I have to host them on another site and I just don't have the time.

Spring seems to be here and everyone sounds like the aches and pains are getting worked out and the call of the beautiful outdoors is calling!!

Keep up the good work and keep moving!! :woohoo:

DH and I are officially signed up for the ToT 10-miler! :goodvibes Rooms at BWV are booked. Now all we have to do is train. Using Hal Higdon again - modifying his Half program.

DH is killing my time. He ran a 8:20 pace this weekend. I have no hope (or desire) of ever catching up. Can you believe this is a man who didn't want to starting running in the first place. Now he's a junkie. :rotfl:

On the horizon for us:

Crescent City Classic 10K - April 7
Castaway Cay 5K - May 19
Baton Rouge Zoo Zoom 5K - August 25
ToT 10-Miller - September 29
WDW Marathon - Jan 13

Hello Ducks, this sure was a long month. Looking forward to April. Renee, great report on the Princess! I liked the part aboutthe accordian band. Hope your hat shows up! Crystal, sounds like you have a full plate, go for that race in eight weeks, you can do it! Joe, good luck with you and Deb's upcoming half. And a twinkie run sounds cool! Jen, see you at the ToT! I ran my first race yesterday since january, a four miler. Not my best time, but felt good to be running again, though my knee feels a little stiff now. we are having great weather here.

Have a great week!

Happy Wednesday Ducks!

Thanks for the encouragement...my running has gotten better! My friend and I ran the past three mornings, 3 miles, and our time was about 32:30 yesterday and today. And it's not as hard. My legs don't feel like jello anymore and my breathing is easier.

Augie~Hope your running is also going better...and your knee is ok.
Yay for the zipline! We had such fun doing that.

Jeni~Have you figured out your dh's gift yet? Personally I'd love a "shopping spree" at a running/sports store so I could pick out what I want.
You and your dh are fast runners!

Carissa~WooHoo another trip, that's awesome! We stayed in the cabins for one night one trip. They are so cozy and neat. The only thing we wished they had was a washer/dryer. Otherwise they are a little home. You're going to love it.

Renee~Thanks for the Princess report. That 40 yr old elastic is so funny! Lol! I wonder how it went back after you washed it?!?
Hang in there with the ITBand.

Crystal~WTG on the new goal, and yes you can and will do it. In 8 weeks you will run your 5K. You definitely have it in you to follow this through!

Joe~That's cool about the signs!
You have gotten fast lately! You will do awesome with your first non-Disney half.

Hello Ducks! Liz , Carissa

Having a wonderful wednesday! Wish it were Friday. :)

I got new insoles in my shoes. Smallest best little miracle I could ask for.
I love my shoes but obviously the new arch support and cusioning helped.
They are Sof Sole and I've had them for one week so far, so good.

I did my usual walk. AM Monday and AM today Wed. Finally on my own I started to gain more speed. Now I have moved up from walking 15 min miles to Walk & Jog 11 minute miles!!! Woo hoo! Hope I can keep this up. I like that pace. Not looking to be a true marathon runner but I just didn't think I could get up to this pace after only one year of practice.

Prepping for the TOT. So I'll just keep at it and stay injury free.

Have a great week.

Howdy Ducks! :cool1:

I hope everyone who has been struggling is starting to improve. :grouphug:

My big news is that we're finally planning another FAMILY trip to WDW! My husband and boys haven't been back since our last trip in early 2009. We always said we'd go when my husband retired from the Navy, which he does next year. We got the news that he'll be deploying in the next few months (and gone most of the time before that as they prepare) so we've decided to plan a trip for when he returns. It gives us something to look forward to and something fun to do while he's gone.

I think we've decided to stay at the cabins at Fort Wildnerness, which will be a first for us. I'm really excited about it! :woohoo:

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

:banana:Yay for another trip:banana:

I've decided to look into Jeff Galloways training programs for a wee change. I've missed doing any exercise lately due to asthma flare ups and sick kids
but think I prefer/need to keep walking intervals and his name keeps cropping up:) Are his programmes much the same as C25K?

The C25K is gradually getting you to run for 30 minutes straight. Jeff Galloway (and other run/walk training programs) have you doing intervals throughout. It might be a smarter way to go since once I finished C25K, I never ran straight for that long again.

Liz -- Glad to hear your running is feeling better! :cool1:

Thanks for the advice Carissa. I think I prefer the idea of run/walk intervals. I seem better able to last the distance when I break it up with a walk:). Now I just need to lose some weight and keep the momentum going and I should be able to enter some sort of race over the summer:scared1:

I rarely run non-stop...for my 3 mile runs this week I've been doing a run .5 mile/walk .1 mile interval. I love that one. I have no desire to run non-stop. Run/walk rocks!

Good evening Ducks! Hoping everyone is doing well.

Not much to report from NW Florida with regards to training. I did get on the TM last week and the knee felt much better. Maybe the long layoff is paying dividends.

Work has been hell, but the weather has been beautiful. Been riding the scooter almost everyday. Nothing beats the sound and feel of a Harley. I could kick myself for waitiing so long to buy one.

Still planning to run the Air Force Half in September. As long as there are no hurricanes threatening we should be able to make it. Guess I need to get a training plan set up.

Y'all take care.

:cool2:

Hi Ducks,

Can't believe the month of March has almost come and gone. I last posted at the end of Feb that I was finally getting over being sick - well, I was but unfortunately what I am left with is Adult Onset Asthma! Never had it before in my entire life but finally went to get a chest x-ray last week (which thankfully was normal) and that was my diagnosis. It stinks b/c I am getting winded more easily now... I am truly hoping that as summer approaches it starts to calm down but for now I have to take it slow. We did get an elliptical machine last week so for the moment I am cross training on that. Anyone have any experience/tips/suggestions on how to run with asthma? Unfortunately because of all this I have had to postpone running my first half (which was scheduled for May) :sad1: I really hope to do a Disney Half (either W&D or Marathon Weekend ) so I need to figure out how to live with this for the time being and still be able to run. I see you guys have discussed interval training - that is my plan for now - run/walk along with the occasional shot of albuterol!

Good news is we are headed to Disney in 10 days! We are staying at the Wilderness Lodge Villas so my plan is to run on the path every morning between the Lodge and Ft. Wilderness. :yay: I will try to post some pics on FB!

Happy Spring Duckies!

Happy Spring Duckies!

Oh Robyn, I'm sorry to hear that! :( One of my sons has asthma so I know about it. He's having to use his inhaler these days due to his usual bad spring allergies. (He rarely needs to use it in the winter and summer...it's just spring and a little in the fall when the outdoor allergens are going strong.)
I will hope that you can figure out how to cope with it and run. Yeah, perhaps the run/walk will be the key for you! Hang in there and keep us posted!
Yay for heading to WDW though! We love VWL. Have a great trip! :cool1:

Robyn - I run with asthma. It took me about 4 months to figure it out because it never bothered me before. Apparently my asthma is only triggered by very vigorous exercise. Dr. prescribed Advair. I take it the night before I run and 30 minutes before I run. I saw a significant improvement after about 3-4 days. I also have a regular inhaler that I have had to used 3-4 times total. I don't use it on short runs. But when I was training for my Half, I found I was having trouble about 8-9 miles in. So I'd use the inhaler and be fine for the rest of the race. (Side note - I got mace with a wrist strap from my local gun shop. I took out the mace and put in the inhaler, so I did not have to carry it during the Half.)

It will get better. And my pace dropped by :30 within a week because I was not sucking wind anymore. Good luck!

Hi to all the Ducks!:donald:
I had a good 10 mile run today, the legs and foot were working. Tomorrow is the twinkie run 5K. I think I will concentrate on the twinkies and just stretch out the legs in the 5k.:thumbsup2
Like Carissa, I can start planning a trip to WDW:cool1:, Debbie and I are signed up for the ToT 10 miler.

Liz: Good to hear the running is getting better.

Robyn: Debbie has had asthma her adult life, she manages by using her inhaler just before the run. She hasn't had any breathing problems.

Vic: I'm debating on doing the Air Force Half also, it a fun event, just a little tough getting to the start. Dan Moss (a former Duck) is planning on coming from Japan to do the race I figure I can drive 4 hours to it.

Have a good week everyone!

Joe

It's amazing how much of a difference being distracted while running makes for me... Did a 3 mile run today by myself because my friend couldn't go and my time was over a minute slower without her. And when we run we do plenty of talking (using up more breath!)..today I wasn't talking and yet the run was harder and slower. Crazy!

Oh, so as you know I was planning on a 10K in mid May. Well, I found out that this is a fast(er) group that does this race. Last year the slowest finisher's time was about 1:02:30. My time would be closer to 1:07. I'm not sure I want to do a race where not only would I probably be last, but would finish several minutes after the previous person. The only reason I was going to do it is because I've never done an official 10K. I'm thinking I can wait a little longer to do one...lol

So therefore without that race, I am now not doing any races at all until Goofy! And actually with how much that's going to cost...that's a good thing. ;)
