Don Imus in trouble again?

You have to ask yourself why someone would ask such a question. What difference could it possibly make?

I don't know a thing about football. I hate football. I do know that a lot of these athletes are not the sort of people I'd associate with and discouraged my kids from using them as role models (though you can only do so much...and I admit to buying a Michael Vick poster, it was Christmas, sue me).

So, I can't discuss the football people and don't wish to.

But that "What color was he?" question says a lot more about the person asking it than the race of people who have the skin.

The only generalization (prejudice) that would make any sense would be..... he was a football player?? Of course he was arrested.....we all know football players tend to be criminals.....:rolleyes1

I didn't see anyone on this board decrying the racist comments of Spike Lee and demanding that he be fired for his racist comments when he declared that under an Obama administration he will ring in a "Chocolate City". Or did I miss something? :confused3 Would anyone have been offended if someone suggested the McCain would have a "Vanilla City"? Spike Lee is what he is. So what?

Some of the story in context. I'm an Imus listener - have been for many many years.

He tries to be funny - sometimes it doesn't work. He does a lot of good for children with cancer and autism.

In fact, on his new show, he has hired two African American comedians to offer balance. He has had a lot of guests on discussing race relations, and professors of American American studies discussing the African American experience.

This country has more problems than concentrating on what Don Imus said today. My humble opinion of course.

NEW YORK - Months after returning to the radio with a pledge to mend the wounds caused by his comments about a women's basketball team, Don Imus is once again defending on-air remarks regarding race. During an on-air conversation Monday about the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones, Imus asked, "What color is he?"

Told by sports announcer Warner Wolf that Jones, who used to be nicknamed Pacman, is "African-American," Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know."

In the face of criticism that ensued, Imus said Monday that he had been misunderstood.

"I meant that he was being picked on because he's black," Imus said in a statement released by his spokesman.

The on-air exchange came six months after Imus' return to work on a new show on WABC-AM following his firing from MSNBC and CBS Radio for making a sexist and racially charged comment about the Rutgers University women's basketball team. When he returned to work, Imus gave a lengthy on-air apology and pledged to use his new show to foster an open dialogue on race relations.

Before Imus offered his explanation Monday, civil rights leader Al Sharpton criticized the remark, saying his National Action Network would look into it.

"I find the inference of his remark disturbing because it plays into stereotypes," Sharpton said in a statement. "We will determine in the next day or so whether or not his remark warrants direct action on our part."

Sharpton was one of the chief critics who successfully pushed for Imus' firing from his televised radio show in April 2007.

WABC and Citadel Broadcasting Corp. Vice President Phil Boyce said Imus would explain his comments on his Tuesday morning show and said it was unlikely the broadcasters would take disciplinary action.

Boyce said Imus had explained himself in a private conversation Monday afternoon and the explanation was satisfactory.

"I think some people may be misunderstanding what he meant," Boyce said.

Jones' attorney did not immediately respond to an e-mail.

Rutgers University women's basketball spokeswoman Stacey Brann said there was "no need to revisit the past" and wouldn't comment further.

On Monday's show, Imus and Wolf were discussing Jones' request Saturday that people stop using his nickname. Wolf explained Jones was suspended from the NFL following a shooting at a Las Vegas nightclub, and he added that Jones had been "arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005."

Imus' next words were, "What color is he?"

I don't think can Spike can be fired. If I'm not mistaking, he owns 40 Acres And A Mule.

If enough viewers are pssed, they will call in to the staton or worse to the sponsors. The network will make the decison they think is financally best.

:worried:  what a fool....
he got a second chance when most do not!!
and when a pattern emerges it is hard to say it was just a mistake...or said for simply shock value....

The people who worked with him said he would use the N word often, in the office, to the face of individuals!!!!

to those who worked with him, this is who he has always been.

If Jones were white, would Imus had noticed, cared or commented on it?

I don't think he would have commented. First, I am no fan of Pac Man Jones -- he is a criminal - plain and simple. However, I heard the tape of Imus' comment -- there was no point in his comment, other than implying that "it was no surprise of Jones' criminal history because he is African American." This is what bothered me about his comment -- I don't listen to Imus' show so I cannot comment on anything else about the man.

Pac Man Jones is a criminal thug who will never learn his ways. He has received leniency because of his status. He should not be allowed to play professional football - and, while I am no Tennessee Titans fan, I do live in Tennessee and am pretty glad that he is gone. It doesn't matter what race Jones is -- he is a criminal -- his race is irrelevant.

For what it's worth, I don't condone the talk no matter what side it is coming from.

Only the Cincinnati Bengals players tend to be criminals :rotfl: I live in Cincinnati and love the Bengals, but it seems like the past few years we have at least 3-4 players arrested every year. So apprently in Cincinnati, the color that will get you arrested is Orange and Black.

Anyway, sorry to take a serious conversation and turn it into a joke. I just couldn't help myself when you wrote (I know you meant sarcastically) that all football players tend to be criminals, because that is what it seems like sometimes here in Cincinnati.

Haha, I was just getting ready to post something like this. You want a good example of a football team with trouble makers? The Cincinnati Bengals fit the bill!

:headache: Is anyone really suprised by Imus comments?:worried:

This (nor the last time) was the first time he ever drooled stupidty out of his mouth!!!!!

Of couse not, but I don't know which line is more unbelieveable - "'I meant that he was being picked on because he's black,' Imus said in a statement released by his spokesman." or "Apparently he (Imus) didn't know so I presume that is why he asked. I didn't know."

To address the OP--Imus is an bigot *** ****. But he has gotten more pubilicity. He may be down for a bit, but he is not hurting. In a land of cable, and sat. radio, he will still have a career.

And he will still have fans that hang on his every word.

Imus becomes the "topic" rather than the thug who was arrested for a shooting at a night club and has a history of six arrests. The Dallas Cowboys have earned the name, the "Dallas Convicts" for a reason. Should he have asked what color he was? Probably not but the bigger concern to me are NFL criminals who make zillions of dollars and get to keep their jobs despite their criminal history.

On Monday’s show, Imus and Wolf were discussing Jones’ request Saturday that people stop using his nickname. Wolf explained Jones was suspended from the NFL following a shooting at a Las Vegas nightclub, and he added that Jones had been “arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”

Imus’ next words were, “What color is he?” If the answer was "he is white", would anyone have noticed?

Did you hear his explanation this morning? Based on what he said, I don't think he'd agree with your assessment. According to him Jones isn't a thug, he's a victim. The only reason he was arrested is because of the color of his skin. The police are picking on him because he's black.

Imus must be smoking some strong stuff if he thinks people are going to believe that he's an advocate for the plight of the black man.:rotfl2: :lmao:

I can’t figure out why anyone cares. He is off the hundreds of syndicated stations. He is off MSNBC. Is has been relegated to the genre which he belongs, along with the other bottom feeders of shock radio. And what do you know he is living down to those standards. During the Rutgers incident, I didn’t think Howard Stern comparisons where apples to apples, because he was trying to be a news\current events show, and he had coverage of a 100,000 watt blowtorch and major cable outlet at his disposal. Now, I do think the Stern comparisons are fair. I don’t know what his format is now, but clearly his audience his much smaller than it was.
