Dolphins in Cozumel

Anyone swim with the Dolphins on Cozumel?

The DCL excursion says it is the ENCOUNTER, not the SWIM. I have 2 children that are interested in the SWIM, but they are not over 4'5" as the website says it requires.

Ray... I thought I read that you and Michael did the SWIM in July? How did it go? Did they check on the height of the children? Did you book directly?

Any info would be appreciated.

My sons did the Dolphin Encounter last year at Chankanaab Park in Cozumel. We did not go with the tour, but we beat the rush by leaving the ship and taking a taxi to Chankanaab. As it turned out, some folks from the Carnival ship in Cozumel at the same time, shared a taxi with us. I believe the fare was less than $10 US. Chankanaab has an entry fee, also about $10 US. We already had the "primo" beach chairs by the time the tour groups arrive over an hour later.

If you decide to take a taxi on your own, as soon as you arrive at Chankanaab, go to the dolphin area and let them know you want to Swim or Encounter. They will let you know what time to come back (probably a couple of hours) so that you can swim/snorkel/sun bathe until time for your dolphin adventure. It was much cheaper this way (I think about $60 -70 US, maybe less).

If you choose SWIM rather than Encounter, make sure your children can REALLY SWIM. They are wearing life vests, but the dolphin pushes them through the water up into the air! They come back down with a big splash or they hold the fin and are pulled quite fast, through the water until they let go. My kids, especially the 9 year-old (not a strong swimmer), saw this and said No thanks. The encounter was nice they are in the water with them, doing tricks, petting, etc., but the water is never more than chest height.

Whichever you choose, it will be worth the money. My kids really enjoyed it!
