Jenny: How many rest days do you have per week?
Have a good run in the am!

The plan is for 2 rest days a week, but life sometimes happens so I'm sure there will be weeks with 3 rest days.
I did 3 miles on the TM this morning. I'll be glad for the time change right now it doesn't get light until 7:20 or so and that is too late for my runs. Next month I may be able to sneak outside morning runs in which is much nicer.
Hope everyone has a great day:goodvibes

Rain, rain, go away...

<whine>Today's training was brought to you by Precor. If they could make our treadmills more visually stimulating. Maybe surround sound. Never thought I'd dislike the TM so much after starting C25K on it in January. </whine>

Onward... three miles today. Steady run.

Next run Saturday looks cool and clear.

Morning everyone! I did some speed work at the track last night. I was suppose to run one lap at 5K pace but I thought it would be fun to see how fast I could go if I just went all out. My fastest lap was 7:47 m/m. Now if only I could do that for 13 miles! I wish! I also got out this morning for an easy 3 miler. I saw a lot of raccoons out and about since it's garbage day in my neighbourhood.

Liz - No rain yesterday afternoon. It was kind of a misty drizzle but I was only outside for 30 minutes so I didn't mind much. I tend to lean backwards too and I tend to sway back and forth a little too.

Corina - I pretend I'm running through Epcot when I'm on the TM too! Sorry to hear about your run in last year with the dog :( Having a dog or some other wild animal chase me is one of my biggest fears too when running.

dislvr74 - WTG on your 5 miler!

Joanne - I was doing speedwork last night too! My shin's a little sore this morning too so I know what you mean about the stairs :)

Jenny - I'm sort of looking forward to the time change too. It will be good for my morning runs but it will mess up my running at the track a little since I usually don't get off work until 5PM. I'll end up doing those in the dark but I usually try to bring DF so those aren't too bad.

Jennifer - How was your 6 miler?

Have a great day everyone!

Speed work. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
Oh, no wait, you guys are serious, aren't you?

:)

I hear ya'!!! I've been starting my runs in the dark. I hate it. It feels SO scary to me and I live in a nice neighborhood! I'm looking forward to running in the light in a couple weeks.

Onward... three miles today. Steady run.

[r.

Great run! I wish I could be steady. I tend to have a fast mile and then a slow one.

Wouldn't you LOVE to run 13 miles at a 7:47 pace? I have a friend here who runs really fast. I saw her after her marathon last Sunday and asked how she did. She was disappointed - 3:01 - for the MARATHON! Wow!

Anyway, my 6 miler was awesome this morning. Weather was just perfect! It's a little lonely out there right now though. For the last few months people around here have been training for the marathon here. It was last weekend and now there's NOBODY out in the morning with me!

Speed work. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

:)

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I just started with speed work. After I ran my relay last Sunday, I talked with a trainer. She gave me some ways to get faster and I thought I'd try it a couple times/week. We'll see if it actually works! I gotta say - I HATE it!!

Jennifer: I live in NC actually, but Tega Cay, SC is only about 30 miles from me. We looked into that area when we were moving here, it sounded nice.
Do you ever run with your 3 yr old in a jogger? It'd be nice to have jogger company on here. :)
Funny about your friend being disappointed in her 3 hour marathon!!
Glad your 6 miler went well, albeit lonely!
If you feel like telling about what exactly you do for speed work, I'd be interested!

Jenny: Oh ok. I was wondering if you were going to do less than the 2 rest days, I'm glad you are not! lol My plan will be the opposite of yours...mostly 3 rest/4 run days per week but I want to do some weeks of running 5 days as we get into December.

Ronda: Neat that you can show your stats like that. Funny about the TM. You need to join us in TM Fantasyland... imagining ourselves in WDW while on there. lol

Vicky: Whoa! 7:47, you speedster!
Cool, you are in TM Fantasyland too! :teeth:

sk8: LOL! I'm with you! Speed work? Wha??? Huh?! :confused3
I feel like all of my running is speed work!

Me: I had a nice 3 mile run outside this morning, and jogger-free since my dh was home. I also had a first, I talked on the phone while running. My brother called me about a mile in so I told him he can talk and I'll listen...it'll be a nice distraction. :) It totally was! I just need to use my earpiece thingy if I do that again, it got a little tiring holding the phone up to my ear!

good evening, Everybody

Just got back from a week in South Carolina, where they had record cold. Still warmer than Cincinnati! While there, I had a 7 mile walk at a 14:53m/m pace. That's my fastest pace for that distance, ever. Could be because it was pouring rain! Did it on my 62nd birthday. A couple of days later, on a beautiful day, I walked 8 miles on same course and couldn't get my speed back. I hovered around the 15:20 mark. I guess I need adverse conditions or the thought of birthday cake!

Hi everyone-

It seems like a long time since I posted, but it could be that you kids are all so speedy!! Glad to hear that everyone is doing well with training.

:guilty:I have restarted WW-seems I somehow gained 20 lbs back of the 50 I had lost:eek: So I am rededicated and thoroughly motivated to get my booty in gear (and smaller jeans too).

I am running training runs 3x week- On Weds I do 3 miles on the TM (hate it, hate it, gonna try that Fantasyland thing:laughing:), now Fridays are our long run (I train with my inlaws) and Sunday is a 3 miler outside, tempo run. I run early in the am, but it is too dark during the work week to get out. I am off on Fridays thankfully, so I can get running in then. Normally we do long runs on Sunday, but we may switch to Fridays. Sunday I can get out before DH and DD get up, but it is light out. PHEW!!

On Tuesday and Thursday, I am doing other exercise-incline walking on the TM (funny, I don't mind that, but can't stand running on the TM anymore), Wii Fit or other plyometric exercises. Monday and Saturday are my off days. But I do walk the dog everyday morning and night, so I do get some exercise in on those days.

Tomorrow is a 7 miler, looking to do it in about 1:20. Will depend on how I feel and how speedy FIL is, he is the pacer and towards the end he will run solid 9min miles, pushing me quite a bit (since I normally run 10:30-11:00 min miles). No worries about getting my speed work in-I am just trying to catch up to the old man:rotfl2:

Have a great day tomorrow everyone!!:3dglasses

Hello!! Wow - 7 Halves!!! I hope to join you some day with that many.

It took me 2 years to do my first five. I'm attempting to double that number by doing 5 more over the next 7 months. I'm a little worried about doing two back to back. The Illinois marathon and Indy mini-marthon are the first two weeks of May and I really want to do both. I think if I train smart and stay injury-free I'll be fine.

I did my 3 miles this morning outside with my 3 yr old in the jogger. It was too gorgeous not to head out there. Running with the jogger is a lot different, and harder! I think it's actually good for me though, a different type of run. It also makes running jogger-free feel easier! lol

Hi Liz,
That's great! What a super training idea. Kind of like running with weights on your ankles so it's easier to run when you take them off!

Just popping in to say that I just did 5 miles in an hour! That is pretty amazing for me.

Woo-hoo! You go speed demon!! I hope to get there some day.:thumbsup2

Go Liz GO!!

I think I'm ready to try and get 2 miles in - this is the reason I will be in jeapordy of being swept - I just cant seem to get over the fear and get out there!! My mind is a powerful negative influence on me!!!

The weather in the Chicago area is so beautiful, I will try after work to get 2 miles in!! Like it or not I'm going to Disney's Half - so I have to try!!

I'm with you Sandy! We'll do this together. ;)

I'll be Doing The Donald for the second time in 2010. The 2009 Donald was my "dream race" when I started running in the spring of 2007. I started with C25K and ran quite a few smaller races, but The Donald was the ultimate goal in my mind. I knew several people who said they were going to go for Marathon weekend that year. Well, as the time ticked away, more people were unable to go. I was determined, however, and even though I was nervous to do it as a solo trip, I went ahead and planned it.

October 29, 2008, I was out walking my dog when another neighborhood dog saw us and came racing through his invisible fence to see us. As I was trying to lead the 90 pound golden doodle back to his house, I ended up getting jostled from behind and fell to the ground, hitting my face on the pavement. I didn't black out, even, but over the next few days, it became apparent that I had a concussion. I ended up having to take a month off of running entirely. In December, I began running again. I was not sure I'd be able to do it, but I did get a few longer runs in on my treadmill ( could not take any chances on another fall outside in the winter weather) and did go and finished the half in 2:59:34, about 15 minutes slower than my hoped for time, and I was lucky to do it. At my heaviest weight in ages, undertrained, I never lost sight of one thing: I was lucky to be running this race at all.

I immediately registered for 2010 because some of those friends who were going to go in 2009 actually ARE going in 2010, but mostly because I want a re-match. My challenge: to stay healthy and safe while training and see just how much better than last year's time I can manage.

This made me smile. :) I used to live in MA, and the fact is, nobody in Minnesota says "wicked." I miss it!

Treadmill pointers - it's tough, you know? I prefer running with music, peppy music or angry music (Pink's Funhouse is a current fave) and then imagine yourself in the race. Imagine approaching the contemporary resort on foot, running up Main Street, Rounding the courner and seeing Spaceship Earth, crossing the finish line. Imagining a future race has gotten me through many a long TM workout.

Wow, good story! You are definitely due for a do-over. My step-sister lives in Minnesota and she always teases me for saying 'wicked'. :lmao: It truly is a regional word. Gives me away even though I don't have a Boston accent! Thank you for the TM pointers. I'll have to try the WDW visualization next time.

Speed work. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Speedwork???? Are you kidding? I'm lucky to go from walking to jogging to running. :cutie:

Holy cow! I can't even imagine being able to run that fast for that long! Great job with the speed work. I'd love to hear what your trainer recommended. How does one start on speed work?

Wow, that's great that you have your inlaws to train with!

Well tonight was a milestone! I ran a 13 minute mile on the TM!!! Now I just need to whittle that down to 12 minutes and be able to do it for 13 consecutive miles! I'm starting a training plan November 2, so this is a good baseline. Can't wait to get faster and fitter!

I'm off for 2 days and will run again on Sunday (long run, outside). Good thing too! ... I noticed a hot spot on my foot tonight.

BTW, has anyone tried CherryPharm? I just got some and it amazing!! It's cherry juice (smoothy?) that has protein in it. It tastes like super tart cherry pie filling and makes me feel great after a run. I'm totally hooked now!:)

queen mimi: Hello! :) I am in NC, very close to the SC border and yes, it was cold earlier this week!! Nighttime lows in the 30's. We had to give in and use our heat for the first time this season.
Anyway, congrats on the great walk, and to do that on your birthday too, how nice!

Veronica: Good luck with the 7 miles tomorrow! I wish I had someone like your FIL to pace for me, that would be soooo helpful.

dislvr74: I bet you'll do great with your back to back halfs!! :wizard:

MapleGirl: I'm glad I'm not the only one who needs to be educated on speed work! lol
Congrats on the 13 minute mile!! You will get to that 12, keep at it!
I'm starting my official training plan on Nov. 2nd too. :)
I hope the hot spot heals right up for you!
CherryPharm sounds interesting, where do you buy it?

Me: Tomorrow is a rest day for me, but I will be chaperoning my 5 yr olds Kindergarten field trip to the pumpkin farm. :) Have a good night all!

It seems there are some questions about speed work... Many training plans have different recommendations but here are a few I have seen/followed

I am currently following Hal Higdon's plan and his speed work starts with running 400 meters or 1/4 mile at your 5k race pace followed by 2-3 mins of easy jogging/walking - repeat for 5 times. This is very easy on a track or treadmill. I started with 5 repeats, than 6 repeats, last night was 7 repeats

I have also done 60 seconds on 90 seconds off while on the treadmill. Run as much faster for 60 seconds and then 90 seconds of walking/jogging

Fartleks are another option - may have heard about telephone poles :) Start at one telephone pole and sprint as fast as you can to the next and then walk/jog until the next one and sprint, etc.

Speed work is about quality miles over quantity miles. I usually do a warm up of 5 mins followed by a cool down of 5 mins.

Tempo runs are another version of speed work, one that I don't excel as well with for some reason..lol Start with a warm up of say 5-10 mins, gradually get faster for 10-15 mins with the faster being at the end of the 10-15 mins, followed by a 5 min cool down.

Hill work is another way to improve speed and can be done if you have a good incline hill to run up and jog back down , rinse and repeat each session adding another repeat. I mostly do these on the treadmill. I will run 60 seconds on incline 8 and then back down to my normal incline of 1 for 90 seconds, repeat for 30 mins

Wednesdays are my specialty run days so one week is intervals, next week tempo and 3rd week hills, repeat.

I have seem huge improvements since I started running at different speeds. I have slowed down my long slow runs by almost a minute and have slowed down my easy runs by 30 seconds and have sped up my fast runs by over a 1 minute. Every other Saturday my miles are done at race pace and I am seeing improvements on my time every week...

Hopefully this long winded explanation will help someone and I am sure others will chime in on what they do

Speed work might come in handy when I am attempting to sprint away from the sweepers!

Yesterday was a beautiful fall day in NoVA. I "wogged" 3.3-ish miles in 40 minutes, 3 minute run / 2 minute walk. I run on a mile-marked trail, so I know my first mile was 12:08 and my last mile was 13:19. Since I turned around between mile markers, I only have a guess as to how far and how fast I went in the middle section. The last mile had about 2.5 sections of walking, instead of 2 in the first mile, thus the big slowdown.

So here is a "get to know you" question: Where do you run most often? Pictures are good!

I live about a mile from George Washington's house, so I spend a lot of time on the Mount Vernon Trail. I am lucky to be so close to such a beautiful and safe trail. I can even bike 16 of my 18 miles to work in DC on the trail - which I do about once a week in the spring/fall.

I do most of my running in my neighborhood - I can get almost 11 miles before having to backtrack to go down any side streets so that is easy. I also drive 20 minutes to a state park to get my trail fix. Nothing overly beautiful or exciting but it gets the job done

Thank you for the tips/explanation on the speed work.

I run either on the treadmill at the University where I work or around the lake in my neighborhood. 1 lap around the lake is 2 miles. I've been doing either 1 or 2 laps. I need to find a new route when I start to up my miles.

Well there is only one word to describe this mornings 7 mile run:

TERRIBLE!:sad2:

MIL was in a mood, and started out like a house a fire. We run an out and back and once I hit the turn, I lost my groove and rhythm. Then I got a stitch in my side, so I walked a little to get past that. Finished in 1:23. But the last 2 miles were brutal, I just felt like I could not be coordinated at all. But I did it.

Good news was that my weight was down 3 lbs today!!:thumbsup2

Fortunately we have more awesome runs than we have sucky runs...
Way to go on the 3lbs....:banana::banana:

sk8ingmom I live in suburban Maryland and I covet your running trail. Everytime I go to Mt. Vernon or Alexandria I look at that trail by the Potomac and think what a great place that would be to run. I'm glad you appreciate it:goodvibes My neighborhood has lots of running/biking trails that are nice to run. I have one real nice 3 mile loop that mostly is a paved trail through the woods underneath the power lines. It also includes a couple of small hills which keeps me on my toes.

Did my 8 miler long slow run yesterday on a trail for a change.... Today - well I am recovering from a Halloween party last night so not sure what my feet will do today....:rotfl2:

Joanne :cheer2: for 8 miles! You are right on track!

How did everyones runs go this weekend?

I did a 6 miler in 68 minutes. Felt pretty good about that. I'm almost halfway there distance wise. Too bad I know from experience that the first half is always a lot easier than the second half:rotfl:
