*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

Hello! Hope everyone had a great weekend! I did my 10K on Saturday which was at the zoo. Even though it was cold and in the morning, I didn't see any animals except for elephants and zebras. I thought they would have been out and about :confused3 The race was pretty fun, I PB'ed at 1:00:24 but wished I would have checked my watch at the end. It would have been nice to come in under 1:00. Oh well. I ran negative splits which I'm happy with. I'll do a little more speedwork and hopefully the next 10K I do, I'll shave a few more minutes off. I'm off to the gym after work. My PT is away today so I'm not sure what I'll be doing with the new trainer.

Liz -I've been to CG a few times! I love their flatbread and sushi! DF loves the duck confit but I find that a bit heavy. I wanted to try the pork tenderloin but was kind of turned off by the way the server described it. Are you going to try and time your ADR with Wishes? WTG on your weekend 10K!

Tracy - How was your 8 miler?

Joanne - Hope you're feeling better! Glad you were able to get all the ADRs you wanted! Chef Mickey's always seems to be on our to-do list. How is Narcooses? I've always wanted to try it.

Jen - Congrats on your 5 mile race!!

Have a great day everyone!

Can I join too???!! I started running in 2008, so this half marathon will be two years since I started. I still can't believe I'm planning to run 13.1 miles and plan to walk afterward! :rotfl: My goal time is 2:20, but secretly I really want 2:10!!

I just ran a leg of the Detroit Marathon Relay yesterday. I did the 6 mile leg (and the one that went from Windsor, Ontario and through the underwater tunnel back to the US - COOL!). I got a PR, running the 6 miles in 56 minutes. Our relay team got 10th in our division (of 66!). I couldn't believe it! We were all moms who had recently started running.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know all of you!!!

ETA: I'm also running the 5K with my three boys! They all started running with me this fall. We ran our first race together in September. My 9 and 13 yo finished a 5K in 27:15!!! The 11 yo finished in 28:15. I ran the 10K that day and couldn't keep up with them for that first half!!!

Hey Vicky!

Thanks for asking, my 8 miles were just wonderful and the first time this "fall" that I got to wear a long sleeved tech shirt! Whoo Hoo. No sweat rag needed and no dying of thirst!! It was a lovely day for an 8 miler.
Next week is a 12 miler, getting closer to the Spacecoast Half!

-Keep training and putting one foot in front of the other everyone!

-Tracy

Jennifer that marathon does sound really cool!! CONGRATULATIONS - the news here in Chicago just reported 3 deaths from that marathon, so I thought it sounded brutal!!

Keep on keeping on!! :cool1:

I missed my run yesterday - slept right through my alarm. I can't decide if I should try it tonight and skip my scheduled cross training (swim), or if I should write it off and stick with the plan.

Oh that's neat you ate at Cali Grill last year. So how was it? Do you remember what you had? I'm not a wine drinker so no worries there. I've been looking at the menu on AllEars to see what I want. I'm so excited about trying out some nicer WDW restaurants.

I think I had think I had:

Triple Cheese Flat Bread - Pecorino, Asiago, and Provolone with Sun-dried Tomato and Arugula Pesto

Maine Lobster Risotto - with midnight moon goat cheese, lobster oil and meyer lemo beurre blanc

Pan-roasted Pacific Halibut Fillet - with "Stir-fry" Vegetables, Sticky Rice, and Ginger-Soy-Hijiki Broth

Trio of Temptation - Cheesecake with Pistachio Cookie and Chocolate Banana Sauce, White Chocolate Mousse with Passion Fruit Puree, and Florida Strawberries with Mojito "Sabyon"

I love that I could just look up all of that on allears! Someone at our table had the goat cheese ravioli and it was amazing. I can't remember what everyone had, but it was all good!

Welcome and congrats! My DS10 is running the 5K. It will be his first race at that distance, so I'm not sure how he will do, but he runs a similar pace to your boys. He has run a 7-ish minute mile since 3rd grade and ran 1.4 miles during a triathlon this summer in 12:46. He doesn't get his speed from me!

Yea. Three men died that day. It was a shocker. I actually saw one of the men go down. I was between miles 11 and 12 and the ambulances were already there for the first guy who fell. And, then the second one fell very close. It was the first death in the Detroit Marathon since 1994. The course is actually fairly flat. The hills are mostly in miles 7 - 12. The weather was gorgeous. I'm looking forward to seeing what made those men die. Two of them were young - 26 and 32. It's just heartbreaking.

Thanks! Your 10 yo sounds like quite the runner! Good for him! My 9 yo can also do a 7 minute mile! But, he can only keep it up for 1 mile. He's in karate and his instructor has them run a timed mile occasionally. Good for your ds on a triathlon! So, he can swim and bike too?

I'm out the door for my 4 mile run today!

Good morning ladies! I couldn't log into the DIS yesterday for some reason. I did a clean sweep of my computer and now it's fine, so it must have been on my end.

Anyway!

Sandy I hope your dd had a great 13th and that the party went well! Happy Birthday to her, 13, that's a big one!

Linda Did you go 7mph on the TM for the entire 3 miles? That is fast.

Joanne That's great you're feeling better and did a longer run than planned. I know that's such a good feeling!
You've got some great ADR's planned!

Vicky Way to go on the great 10K!
Our Cali Grill ADR is for 5:40 (Jenny, correct me if I'm wrong). I don't know when Wishes is that night, have to look that up.

Jennifer Welcome! Yay, another mom of 4!! :)
Congrats on the Marathon relay!
That's neat your boys are running with you, and doing the 5K in January. I've mentioned that my 10 yr old is running with me sometimes now. He wants to do a 5K on Halloween, we haven't decided yet.

sk8 Mmmm, your CG meal sounds delicious! I can't wait to eat there.
That's neat your 10 yr old son is doing the 5K!

As for me...

I did my 3 miles yesterday.

Dh got our Wii working again and we started using the Wii Fit Plus this weekened. Oh my gosh, it is so much fun!!! All 6 of us love it, ages 3 to 37, THAT is good family entertainment. :) So I'm planning to use that today.

Did you all get that WDW Marathon Weekend update email yesterday? Since we've been talking about proof of time, it has this in there:

"PROOF OF TIME
If you believe you will finish the Half Marathon in less than 2:45 hours or the Marathon in less than 5:00 hours, proof of time is required.

Acceptable forms of proof of time are either a photocopy of a finisher's certificate or a print out of race results. This should include name of race, year, distance and time finished. Half Marathon proof of time must be from a race 10K or longer. Marathon proof of time must be from a race 15K or longer. All forms of proof of time must be from a race after July 1, 2007. If you do not provide proof of time you will be placed in the last start corral.

If you did not provide proof of time, you will need to bring that proof of your estimated finish time to the Runner Relations booth at the Expo. If you listed a race result as proof of time when registering online, then you do not have to do anything further."

I'm wondering if since they mistakenly put my estimated finish time as 2:15, and of course I did not show any proof of that time, that they'll put me in the last corral. Do I want to be in the last corral? I have no idea what my finish time will be. I can't imagine it being less than 2:45, or it could be 3:29!

Wow, that is crazy! Keep us posted if you find out what happened. How shocking and awful for the families.

:cheer2::cheer2: Congratulations, Jennifer! :cheer2::cheer2:

It is such an awful tragedy. I know they families of these men are devastated and my heart goes out to them. They said yesterday they had the results of the autopsies but they needed to evaluate and it could be awhile before it is released.

And don't forget that long steep incline to the bridge was a huge cardio! Even with the longer warm up before we started up this year I was gasping for breath by the time we got to the top! :goodvibes

Happy Training for the Donald 2010!

Margie/funwalker...OT: I grew up in Portage Michigan! Lived there from 1980 until 1995.
Good luck with the Goofy! :)

Jennifer that is so sad :(

Well yesterday I was able to get a little over 9 miles in! YAY! Felt great.

I wanted to share something with you guys. I don't know if this happens to any of you, but when I run in the cold weather, after I'm done I usually get a stupid cough. It's from breathing in the cold air. Well, I read online that if you drink something hot as soon as you are done, you won't get the cough. I drank some hot plain mint green tea and it really worked!!! Hope this little trick can help somebody. :)

I'm in.... sort of..... well, I'm signed up for the race so I better be in!

This is my first half-marathon and 2nd race ever. I did the C25K program a year ago and finished a 5K in 46 minutes (dead last, but oh what a feeling to cross the finish line!!!!). I'm chubby and would much prefer stay indoors with my cats, a book and a nice cup of hot cocoa. But I made this goal and I'm going to achieve it!

What is so nice is that my wonderful step-sister is going to run it with me. She's a runner, but has never run a race. She is slim and athletic, so I'm really nervous about embarrassing myself when I try to run with her.

She's in Minnesota and I'm in Massachusetts, so we can't train together. My DH is willing to ride his bike with me on the runs and is also helping me do some weight training at home. I work full-time and I'm taking 5 graduate classes, so time is an issue.....but as a student I have access to a gym! That makes things easier.

BTW, this race is a celebration for me.... I'm running it to celebrate the end of graduate school and my time as a student. Symbolically, it is a really big deal to me. :cutie:

My family is really wonderful and coming to WDW to support Alicia and I at the race. I'm filled with such love for them all and appreciation for all the support they have offered. Alicia and I want to run the WHOLE 13.1 miles and make everyone (including us!) proud.

So, here's the plan..... I'm going to borrow goofyinohio's plan and start with it in November. Since I have a night class on Mondays, I had to adjust it a little. I printed it all out in a calendar and I have a copy hanging in my office and I'll hang another on my refrigerator. Each month has a quote:

October (pre-training): "It hurts up to a point and then it doesn't get any worse." - Ann Trason
November: Pain is temporary, pride is forever." - Annonymous
December: "I have met my hero, and he is me." - George Sheehan
January: "The gun goes off and everything changes... the world changes... and nothing else really matters." - Patti Sue Plummer

The problem right now is that I can't seem to run for more than a few minutes before I have to walk. How can I force myself to run longer and faster?? I can I move from a walk/run program to a run only program? I can walk for ages without having a problem, but the moment I start running or jogging I get completely out of breath and my lower legs (and knees!) begin to ache. :headache: It is so frustrating!!

OK, this post is wicked long. So I'll end it with a question:

I'm going to the gym tonight. I'm planning on walking/running/jogging on the treadmill. What pointers do you have for me?

Thank you everyone very much in advance for your support, help and understanding. I hope I'll get a chance to meet some of you in January. Waddle on!

Howdy everyone. I just found this thread, and thought I would pop in. I am doing the Half in Jan, and I am really looking forward to it (it is going to be my first-ever marathon).

Jennifer Welcome! Yay, another mom of 4!! :)

!

Another big family! Yeah! Where are you staying at Disney? We found a condo at Windsor Hills. It'll be our first time off property and I'm not so sure about it. We're sharing the condo with my brother and couldn't beat the price! And, we needed it to be cheap as we're taking a cruise after the week at Disney (kids said free!!).

Let your ds do the 5K! He'll love it and it'll give him motivation to keep working out! It's worked for my kids anyway.

I need to get the Wii Fit. We have the Wii, just haven't broken down to get the Fit yet. Question - does it HAVE to weigh me? I don't want that broadcast to my entire family, thank-you-very-much!!!

I did get the update. But, I was confused. It said that I needed to confirm my registration for the races and it would send me another email confirmation. Why? I tried to do it, but couldn't figure it out!

:cheer2::cheer2: Congratulations, Jennifer! :cheer2::cheer2:

Happy Training for the Donald 2010!

Which race did you run? See, I missed out on that LONG incline to the bridge as I had the second leg of the relay - miles 6 - 12. The only inclines I know about were the ones in that leg (and there were plenty!!). I don't train on hills (there just aren't any near me!), so I was having a HARD time with it - especially that incline coming out of the tunnel!

Margie/funwalker...OT: I grew up in Portage Michigan! Lived there from 1980 until 1995.
Good luck with the Goofy! :)

Cool! I grew up in Sturgis. I bet our schools played each other in sports. I was class of 93 and played basketball, volleyball, and cross country.

Jennifer that is so sad :(

Congrats on the 9 miles!!! That's my long run at this point.

Thanks for the hint on the breathing! I've just started having trouble with that. It feels like I have asthma when I come inside after running. I'll tell my dh to have the coffee ready tomorrow when I walk in the door!!! Today it wasn't quite as bad as it had been and I thought maybe it was because I cooled off outside before coming in.

Your post made me cry!!! I just LOVE stories like this. I don't have any advice as I'm new to running myself. But I wanted to encourage you!!

Oh wait - one piece of advice I thought of - do you have good shoes??? That made all the difference in the world for me when I started. And, by good shoes, I mean go to a running store and have them fit you. They should let you try them out a bit - run around the block or something.

Good luck!

Howdy everyone. I just found this thread, and thought I would pop in. I am doing the Half in Jan, and I am really looking forward to it (it is going to be my first-ever marathon).

Hey! Welcome. I'm new here too - yesterday. And, I've already posted a BUNCH! This is my first half too. I've run in the marathon relays in Detroit for two years now and just LOVE the atmosphere. But, each time I finished my leg of the relay, I KNEW I could run more. So, I'm taking the plunge!!!

COLOR="RoyalBlue"]There are three of us running the half. My DH ran the marathon in '97 and I just stood

on the sidelines thinking I can never do that. But I will be turning 50 next year, DD and DS are both in college and training for a half

marathon just seemed the best way to combat empty nest syndrome. We are using "marathons for mortals" plan and it has been going

really well. I had started running on the treadmill last year to lose weight and found that running wasn't as hard as I thought it was. So

DH, DD-20 and myself will be running in the half. My DS had knee surgery last year and running is not for him. We love Disney so we are

arriving early to enjoy the parks before the race. I love reading all the posts and seeing so many training, can you believe it will be here

in 12 weeks?:yay:[/COLOR]

Hi all! You will not be able to miss me on race day....I will be the one waddling as fast as possible to stay ahead of the sweepers! Seriously. I started planning this a year ago, but ended up having knee surgery in July so my goal is to finish the race without being swept (I think I can, I think I can, I think I can). I am using the Marthon for Mortals training plan.

This is a great tip! Thank you!!! I get a terrible cough after a cold run so I'll have to try this.

Thanks! Yes, I do have a good pair of running shoes. I love them!

Hmmm.... I might need to check out the Wii Fit. We have the Wii already. What kind of things can you do on the Fit? What makes is fun?

I just emailed DH that a lot of you have the Wii Fit and now he wants to shoot out and get one. I think we might!

Also, I made ressies for Boma for our party of 13 on race day. 6:10pm.... hope I'm awake still. Thoughts?

Bonsoir,
Training is going well even though it is a bit on the cold side. At least it is not snowing, yet.

I have a question. I have not been on a plane since 1992 and with the new rules I was wondering if I can bring my powergel with me in my carry-on bag.I want to put in this bag everything I will need for my run, just in case.

Thanks
DianeM

Lynn Great job on the 9+ miles! Thanks for that tip, I'm sure I will be using it.

MapleGirl Welcome! :) That's great you're so determined, you can definitely do this!! How wonderful that your step-sister will be with you, and what a great way to celebrate the end of the student chapter of your life!

I love those quotes.

As far as being able to run more... When I first started running in February by doing the C25K program, I could not run for more than the 60 seconds, I was breathing so hard. But as I continued the program it got better. But I will say that it wasn't until I had been running for about 4 months that I REALLY noticed a difference in my breathing. And even now due to my Achilles injury in August and not being able to run for several weeks and therefore losing a lot of progress, I have lost some of my breathing ability again. I am hoping in time I will gain it again. I think it just takes time. You have to gradually increase, and your body will become stronger.

I hope your TM workout went well tonight!

We have only scratched the surface on the Wii Fit, and actually my dh and boys have played with it more than I have so far. I did the body test a couple times, and some games: Obstacle Course, Birds Eye Bulls Eye (you flap your arms to fly), Snowball Fight, and Basic Running. You can read more about them here:
http://wiifit.com/training/training-plus.html
We really love it so far!

Boma sounds GREAT for a post race dinner to me! Boma is my dh's and my favorite restaurant in WDW. Jenny (dismagiclover) and I will be eating dinner that Saturday in the castle. We thought that would be a special way to celebrate the race. Anyway, we eat at 5:45 I think, and I think that will be fine. Of course I am clueless as far as how tired I'll be after a half since this is my first!

Joanna Welcome! :) Please stick around and post your training progress!

Jennifer Jenny and I are staying at BLT together. This is a mom's only trip, we're leaving the dh's and kids at home! We'll only be there for two nights (Fri and Sat) but it's going to be great.

We stayed offsite for the first time this summer. We needed an additional night on our June trip before we checked into the THV, but the rooms in WDW were just too much. So I looked at the recommended offsite places on Mousesavers and we chose Caribe Royale. It was great! Then in August we stayed at the sister resort to Caribe Royale, Buena Vista Suites, for 3 nights to fill in nights we couldn't get with DVC (it was a last minute trip) and we loved that too. It's just hard to beat a 1 bedroom suite that fits all 6 of us for under $100! So we will definitely stay at those places again. And I think you'll be fine, I've heard great things about Windsor Hills. How cool about your cruise too, you're going to have an amazing trip!

The Wii Fit does weigh you, but it does not show your weight. It does however show your Body Mass Index. Look here:
http://wiifit.com/body-test/#bmi-weight
And then it tells you your Wii Fit Age.

Did you get the other email from WDW today with the corrected message today? I guess some links were wrong in the one they sent yesterday. I'm not sure about the confirming registration thing, if that's necessary or not?

We are close in age, I graduated in 1994! I went to a private school in Kalamazoo, but I remember our teams played Sturgis. You were athletic! I only played tennis in my freshman and sophomore years, no other sports. After I turned 16 at the end of my sophomore year I got a job and spent most of my time working from then on. I wish I had gotten into running back then, maybe it would be easier for me now! lol

SGcruiser Welcome! :) What a great way to celebrate your 50th, way to go! That's so fun you'll have some of your family with you. I know, 12 weeks, almost 11.5 now, doesn't seem like a lot of time, huh?!!

DianeM Bonsoir :goodvibes Good question on the powergel. I'll be carrying all of my stuff with me on the plane, I won't be checking anything at all. So I need to get up to speed on the rules too. Here's the TSA link:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/index.shtm
Are powergels less than 3 oz? I've never had one. But if so, could it be put in your quart size bag I wonder? Is food allowed in there?
