*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

Vicky... they have the spibelt 2 pocket online too for you to check out. i think it only comes in black or it did when i bought mine. they also have a single pocket that has an inner zipper area? i guess to secure that key, money, id better. another neat thing is they have a single pocket on an arm band.

Thanks Tracy!!! Writing the date/time in PEN now LOL

Yes we do need to laugh, thanks. :)

You and I like it, we'll see what the rest of the group thinks!

I like it too!! :donald:

Some half questions...

1. Did Disney have the where-is-my-runner text thing last year? Did you/yours use it? Did it work?Like others - it does and doesnt work...

2. If the half starts at 5:50 (wheelchairs, right?) and the jack rabbits go off at 6:00, when do the slow pokes cross the start? This matters because...I'm slow too! and from reading all the help posts here in '08 I did get to the start of the last corral - its roped - and we waited there at least 45 min - the hint I took was to grab a pool towel to sit on - so I took that towel to the top of the corral - I started walking early to the corral area, knowing I was in danger of being swept because I'm slow... and I sat on the street, on the towel... in a crowd of other runners!!!

I dont remember when I did cross the start - but it took a long time!

3. I'm slow. So slow that I think DGF can see me on Main St (mile 6ish) around 7:30, hop the monorail and see me around the Poly. Hop again and make it to the finish. If both are running, which monorail would be best? Resort or TTC? My dh saw me at MK - where the runners enter mainstreet - then while I ran over thru Tomorrowland then thru Fantasyland - he jogged up to the castle to cheer - then he got on the monorail and headed to EPCOT - there were some Scream Teamers from WISH that were on the road in front of the Poly to encourage us! It really helped - seriously!

4. For the MK, are the turnstiles open that early? Surely.and no tickets required!

5. Same for Epcot, the park is open early enough for spectating, correct?Yes, and the monorail runs from Epcot to MK that early! DH didnt hang at epcot - he couldnt go into the runners only area - and there is no lines for the porta potties there!!

6. Is there a meet at POP Friday? Has the time been set? 4:30 - and dont be like me and get there late!! Take a resort bus from any park to Pop - (I forgot that minor detail!! lol)

I know it's just 12 weeks away. I want time to stand still. I also wish it could be like an exam and I could cram my training and speed things up.

Thanks for the answers,
Ronda

I just wish my weather here was more conducive to training - or that I enjoyed running - or I was at least 20# lighter!!

Aw, your poor ears! I'm in NC so can't even compare weather here to Chicago area...however I have sensitive ears and even on a somewhat warm day, if it is windy out my ears will start hurting while I run. I will definitely be wearing my headband/ear cover thingy A LOT out there this fall.

Good question. The only things I've thought of having pre race so far is an energy bar and milk. I've read that you're supposed to drink a good amount of water a couple hours beforehand?? I'm not sure what my stomach can handle that early, I'm not a big morning eater. But I want to fuel up in the best way.

Lynn, I've seen those little Jif peanut butters, great idea to bring those! Here they are:
http://www.jif.com/products/details.asp?prodID=572

I wonder if you can fly with peanut butter?

TSA doesnt like Peanut butter - but slimfast makes a nice replacement bar with peanut butter - its high protein - I got mine at Target - its in a yellow box!!

and I seem to recall that the food courts are prepared for the crazy half and full marathon runners - I know we stayed at BCV and were surprised that the coffee area was open - that was in '08 tho :confused3

but do know - when they say the last bus leaves at 5am - they MEAN IT - not 5:01 am - 5:00AM get there (the bus) by 3 - 4am at the latest!! there are 16,000 other people trying to get there - and the roads are closed so those "elite" runners can get this started on time!! :goodvibes

Yes, oops the day for the WISH meet is Friday, Pop Century Food Court (can't miss the people) and at 4:30pm. People hang out for the first 20-30 min and then we take a group shot with tons of cameras!! hahaha. So be prepared to stand and smile lots!!!:)

- Oh and prerace food. I don't usually eat anything in the am when doing anything less than 8 miles. Just the way I am. Susie (escape) got me going with Poptarts. I take a Fiberone Blueberry pop tart and a small bottle of water with me to the start of the Half Marathon. We wait around for so long that I just pick off pieces of the poptart to eat and drink bits of water, trying to only use the portapotty once if possible. I really do try to hydrate well the day before so that morning I try not to drink too much as the water stops will help with that.

-as for the Start of the Half, some times they do change this up a bit, but last year there was 3 waves of starts not including the wheelchairs. Like corral a&b started together and then 10 min later C&D and then 10 min later E started. E is usually the largest corral filled with walkers and people who are first timers and who don't have a previous time to use to get into a better corral.

Good evening,
I am also registered to do the half-marathon and the 5k on Friday and it is fun to see a thread for the Donald. I will be headed to Disney by myself this time in January and this will be my first half-marathon. I just hope the weather will be cooler than last Sunday for the Race for the taste.
This morning, I did a short run and the temperature was minus 2C (about 26F). And it should be the same tomorrow morning for my 12k. I am better get used to it. I am planning to run 4 times a week: we will see how it goes.

Diane

Diane,
Where do you live that it is already only 26 degrees out? I am ready to cry- it is too early for that.

I forgot all about making dinner ADRs for Friday night.OOPS! I am caught up in the trip I will be taking in November and January is so far away.

Had to cancel spinning today- have to bring DD to PSATs.Will see how it looks for a run out there later, I think I see sun.

Have a good one everyone,
Linda

OK, it is still raining. It wasn't stopped for 3 days. I'm going to have to suck it up and pay $7 to run on the TM at the rec center during my son's hockey practice tonight. 6.5 miles on a TM really sounds like torture!

Ahhh, 12 weeks from tomorrow is race day! I think it's going to come fast you guys. 12 weeks from tonight, actually exactly 12 weeks from half an hour from now, Jenny and I will be enjoying a lovely pre race meal at the California Grill!!! Yum!

Does anyone else have dinner plans set for Friday night yet?

ACK! 12 WEEKS!

CA Grill was our "celebration dinner" on Sunday night last year. It was a fun meal, but I personally wouldn't do it pre-race. I like wine with my dinner! With everyone in my family running something, we end up with odd pre-race, post-race combinations in the same meal. Our "celebration dinner" this year is at Narcoossee's on Sunday. I think we will go to Mangino's on Sat. night (Italian place in Shades of Green). I still have no idea where we are eating on Friday. I guess I should figure that out soon.

Some half questions...

1. Did Disney have the where-is-my-runner text thing last year? Did you/yours use it? Did it work?

It worked for us in 2009, but not in 2008. Sign up and hope for the best.

Brrrr! It was a cold run this morning. Driving to the bike trail, the temperature in my car said it was minus 5C (about 20F). But it was a nice long run (for me) with some deers and turkeys on the trail. Two weeks ago I was in Naples, Fl, on vacation and I did the same run in 85F at 6:00 in the morning. Quite a drop in temperature.
Linda-I live in Sherbrooke,Québec. I am sure you have noticed my french-canadian accent:upsidedow.

Have a nice Saturday

Hey guys! I have another question. Can your family members watch you cross the finish line???

And a delicious meal it will definitely be. With great company too;)
Can hardly wait!:goodvibes

You bet! :goodvibes

... I also wish it could be like an exam and I could cram my training and speed things up.

Thanks for the answers,

Welcome Diane(M)! :) Wow, you have some cold weather to run in. I can't imagine! How do you dress for that, lots of layers I suppose? That's neat you saw deer and turkeys on your run. Did you end up doing a 12K?

... liznboys - i have the 2 pocket spibelt and LOVE it. for the Princess I used the bib holders (i bought my belt at the Princess expo) and WOW! I loved it. Didn't have to mess with the pins on the shirt. YAY! lol i also have a amphipod belt (black stretch belt with the green bottles) and i really like the zipper on the spibelt for added security. i use a hand carry bottle holder that has a pocket so i can put my sport beans in there or gu. since i never use my phone during the races i put my phone in one of those snack size ziplocks so i don't worry about it. ...

Oooh, a 2 pocket spibelt, I'm going to check that out, thanks for all the info.

... Liz - No Friday night dinner plans yet but we're doing CG after the race :) ...

Great! Have you been to CG before? This'll be my first time.

The official WISH meet for Marathon weekend is again at the POP Century Food Court. Time: 4:30pm.

Ok all you Halfers, get going on those miles!!!

I have a half coming up the weekend of Thanksgiving, the Spacecoast Half Marathon so I am at my 10miler and things are going well so far. Should be I would think as this will be my 8th Half and then WDW will be my 9th!!:woohoo:

Hi Racey Tracy! :) Wow, you've done lots of halfs, that is so great! I hope someday I can say the same!! Thanks for all that race start info. For we newbies I think it helps to understand how it all works. Thanks for the WISH meet info too.

As far as buses, Jenny and I are staying at BLT so we'll be ridin' in style to the race start on the Monorail! woohoo!

Oh that's neat you ate at Cali Grill last year. So how was it? Do you remember what you had? I'm not a wine drinker so no worries there. I've been looking at the menu on AllEars to see what I want. I'm so excited about trying out some nicer WDW restaurants.

Good Saturday afternoon all! I had a great run/walk today...

My 10 yr old son and I went out and braved the 50 degree (DianeM, you will LAUGH at that.), very light rain and WIND and we did 3.3 miles. Then we came home and he was done but I wanted/needed to do more. My ears were hurting from the cold/wind (I couldn't find my ear band before I went out) and my eyes were so watery from the wind. So I hopped on the treadmill and did another 2.9 miles, bringing me up to a 10K. That's the longest I've gone since my Achilles injury and it felt so good. :) Oh, my time was 74 minutes. That includes the couple minutes it took me to transition from outside to the treadmill.

How were everyone else's workouts today?

Great job Liz! As for me my spinning class I had to cancel like I said earlier then nothing else happened.Took a nap, watched 30 best and worst beach bodies! How ironic huh?
New day tomorrow.

Diane- yes I thought I detected an accent.

How do you guys quote more than one person at a time?

Linda

Did a nice 4 miler today, tried shortening my racewalking time to 8 min and my jogging time to 1.5 min. Seemed to work ok for the 4 miles and I did about a 13 min pace average and that is good for a training workout. Tommorow is scheduled for an 8 miler.

To quote more that one person use the "multi-quote" buttong next to the "quote and reply" button.

The weather is supposed to turn nice this coming week - I'm just so not a cold weather runner... walker.... wogger-wannabe!!

California Grill is a must do for our family - ever since the chef went out of his way to make dd eat!! He made her a flat bread pizza that was "just right"!! DH loves sushi, and of course the main courses do change - he usually is tempted by the fish entree - last time I tried a chicken course with gnocchi - I've never had gnocchi before - I fell in love!!

We're staying BCV - so our Sunday dinner I think is at Yachtsman Steakhouse - I may still tweak these reservations!!

Today is DD bday (13 - teenager! 13 is so much better than 12 for us anyways!) tomorrow is birthday family party!!

I really need to get out and do at least 2 miles!

Oh yeah thanks Tracy I always clicked too fast and never paid attention to what it said.Good luck on the 8 miler.

Linda

I ran a 5 mile race this morning. My goal was to finish in an hour. There were a ton of hills!! I had to walk more often than I wanted to, but still finished in 1:01. So I'm happy with how I did.

I hope everyone else is doing well this weekend. Now I'm going to sit back and watch a little football.

Happy Monday everyone! Is that an oxymoron?

Ran 3 miles on the TM last night was that torture! I find it much more difficult than running outside.I wear a Garmin outside so it's not like I don't watch my pace there too but OMG I was even going at 7.0 and the miles just crept along- felt REALLY good though once I was done.

Today is my stretch and strength day so I am going spinning and will do Jillian's 30 day shred when I come home. That's the plan anyway.

Hope everyone had a great weekend,
Linda

Good Morning everyone

After being sick since last Thursday I am actually excited for this week to start. Odd I know...

I missed a few runs last week due to having a fever but come Sunday I was going stir crazy. It's my long slow run day and I had 7miles on the training calendar. Drove out to a nearby park and it felt so great to be outside running in cool (ok maybe cold air) that I actually did 8 miles...

Here's to great week

On and on a related note - I finally realized last night that I forgot to make ADR's for this weekend, DUH...lol

And I was able to score at the times I wanted:
California Grill
Ohana's
Narcooses
Chef Mickey's
