Doing Disney overweight

Does anyone know if the Haunted Mansion rehab from a little while ago included an update to the old turnstiles? I got caught in that one a few years ago and was so embarrased. Then we went to country bear jamboree and I was stuck in that one too....I thought I'd die of shame....as there were people behind me waiting both times....

Unfortunately not...same old turnstyles...those have to be the smallest things I've ever seen. I've seen people who would be considered no worse than above-average weight struggle sideways to get through those things. Small World and Country Bear too - the last of the ancient old guard Disney turnstyles!

Just mention the issue to a CM as soon as you see one - they will open the gate to go around the turnstyles when you get to it. It's pretty low key when they do it, so you don't feel like there's a spotlight on you when they do...and it's much better then getting stuck in the turnstyle!

Disney is probably the best of any park at accomodating all size folks - and should rarely ever be a problem for a majority of people. The only things people of size have to worry about at Disney would be the leftover old turnstyles mentioned above, the very oldest Carnival-style rides, and the old theater-style shows that still have the narrow armrests like Carousel of Progress.

Hopefully, those 3 or 4 rides with the old turnstyles will eventually convert over to the wonderful optical turnstyles like those at Pirates of the Caribbean after it was redone (a few years back, they too had some of the absolute worst turnstyles in the park).

Thanks Justin! I'm sad to hear that they haven't changed the turnstiles at HM....but it's good to know that I can still ride if I avoid that enterance and use the other one....

take care!

Nope same old ones unfortunally :( I was really hoping they'd switch to the electronic ones but no. Anyways, there is a handicap enterence at the ghost carriage outside and that aviods it completely.

First, let me say to anyone who is freaking out about visiting Disneyland/California Adventure while overweight - I FEEL YOUR PAIN. I just went last week, and I had been stressing about it for months. I am a size 30/32 and weigh 340. I was terrified I wouldn't fit on the rides or that I would break chairs, not fit through the turnstiles, etc. It was a stressful trip to say the least. I kept mental notes the whole trip so I would be able to inform other overweight visitors about what would be safe for them.

I should be honest, it wasn't easy for me to walk around every day. I was really tired out, my feet were exhausted, and I longed for home on more than one occasion. But I also had a load of fun. And please realize - there are TONS of heavy people at Disneyland. I saw some people who appeared to be about 500 pounds or heavier. A lot of overweight folks chose to rent either wheelchairs or electric scooter things. I didn't want to do that, but maybe it's the best choice for some people.

And although I am very overweight, I am more able to stand for a long time, walk, climb stairs, etc. than some overweight people are.

Here is the easiest part: getting through the turnstiles in front of Disneyland and California Adventure. I am a big woman, and I didn't even have to turn to the side to fit through the turnstiles out front. Almost anyone would fit through those ones. And if you didn't, you can go through where the wheelchairs enter.

Okay, let's get to the Disneyland rides first:

Pirates of the Caribbean - NO PROBLEMS. No turnstiles, easy getting in and out, no seatbelts. That was the easiest ride for me, and I enjoyed the peaceful setting.

Indiana Jones - the seatbelts fit just fine and had many extra inches left over. But it seriously hurt my hips when the ride twists and turns. The seats are not super wide. I would say if you're much larger than a 32 you may want to avoid it.

Star Tours - the seatbelt fit fine. I could have probably been up around 400 or more and still had it fit. The issue is that I couldn't turn very easily to see where to push the belt in. The part you have to shove the metal part in is essentially under the arm rest. Thinner people would have plenty of room to turn, I did not. So that was a bit stressful for me. But once I was belted in, no problems. The seat fit me fine. I will say that for people who are much bigger - it isn't super easy to wiggle your way through the seats to get to your seat. But it certainly isn't impossible. Star Tours DOES have a turnstile once you're inside the building. I would imagine you could probably be up to 450 or so and still get through the turnstile.

Honey, I Shrunk the Audience - SEAT ALERT!! I barely fit in these seats, and they were really uncomfortable for me. In theory I could have probably sat on the very edge of the seat. I would say for someone my size or larger - you might want to avoid this one.

Autopia - Again, I worried a lot about this one. I had no problem. I sat down to the left of the steering wheel and scooted across. The belt fit just fine with plenty left over. I don't really like this ride a ton, but no weight issues.

Both Honey and Autopia have turnstiles which fit me, but I had to turn to the side.

Disneyland Railroad - zero weight issues. No seat problems, no seatbelts. Except when I get up on the train my weight pulled it down a little too much for my liking (just a bit embarrassing).

I have heard that Space Mountain can be bad for us overweight folks, so I avoided it.

I did not go on any of the Fantasyland rides this time. BUT I did go on them two years ago when I was a size 26/28 and the only problem I had was that I needed to turn to the side and wiggle through the turnstiles.

Matterhorn Bobsleds: Nice big seats, long seatbelt. It had about another 4 or 5 inches left after I put it on. Should be just fine for most larger folks.

Tiki Room - no seating issues at all. Only problem is the turnstile in front which is pretty small. I avoided it by simply opening the wheelchair access gate located right next to it and slipping inside.

Jungle Cruise - I went on this when I was a size 28. No weight issues in the boat. If you aren't too able to step up and down you might not like it. The issue is the turnstiles. I fit through with some effort, but a somewhat larger woman a bit ahead of me in line did not. She tried and couldn't fit, and ended up having to go around to the wheelchair area to get through. I felt so bad for her. So you can go on this if you're big, but may need to use the wheelchair area (which could be embarrassing).

Haunted Mansion - this one was close for me. It's got the "doom buggies" with a lap bar type thing that lowers itself when you get on. I was fine getting into the car, but when the lap bar came down it pushed into my stomach a bit. I am not sure if those things can be adjusted. If I had been maybe 30 or 40 more pounds I don't know if it would have fit or not. Maybe there's something they can do, but i don't know. At the very end of the ride there are turnstiles. 3 of them. I would suggest using the one on the very left. If you're around my size, you will have to squeeze through those suckers. I hated them. I would also suggest you make sure when you get out of the elevators and start to go down the hallway towards the cars you stay in the back. That way at the end of the ride you can have some privacy and time to get through the turnstiles.

Buzz Lightyear - no seating or seatbelt issues. Just fine.

Didn't go on Splash Mountain, but I saw the log boats and I knew I could have gone on them.

Thunder Mountain Railroad - I was terrified I wouldn't fit on this and I had no problem. It's a big padded lapbar type thing and it didn't push into my stomach. Could be a little hard for some body types to get in and out of the train.

You can go on both the Columbia and Mark Twain ships - no problems.

That's all I went on at Disneyland.

As for restaurants, the seats are all just fine. I think that goes for just about anyone.

I did get the priority seats at Fantasmic without thinking about the chairs. Then I spent the whole week worried I was going to break a chair. The chairs they use are folding chairs (EEKS) and I was worried the whole show. But it didn't break. I wouldn't suggest paying for these seats though. If you are not in the front row you can't see much.

And as for the Monorail - zero weight issues.

California Adventure:

There are lots of carnival type rides here, and there are a lot fewer rides that are "fat-friendly". For instance, the Maliboomer, Orange Stinger, Mulholland Madness, and I think California Screamin' wouldn't fit overweight people. I did some research before my trip, and I didn't even try them.

However, in my opinon the two best rides in the park are Grizzly River Run and Soarin' Over California, both of which I fit on Just fine.

Soarin' I had no issues. All you do is sit down and fasten your seatbelt. The seatbelt would have fit someone about twice my size. However, for some people the metal bars on either side of the seat might be uncomfortable. It was just fine for me, though, and even if you were maybe up to 400 you'd still be alright.

Grizzly River was fine for me as well. The seats aren't super comfy, but they fit me just fine. The seatbelt, however, didn't have a ton of extra inches after I buckled it. Like maybe 3 more inches. So if you're much above a size 32 (I don't know what that would be in men's sizes), I am not sure if you would fit.

Then there's was A Bug's Life Show (It's Tough To Be A Bug). Absolutely no seating issues. They're all benches.

Sunwheel - zero weight issues.

The Aladdin Show - SEAT ALERT. I BARELY fit in those seats. And I do mean barely. They cut into my side and hurt a bit. I think if you are about a size 30 or up you might want to be careful of this show. But if you do fit, it's worth it.

I didn't eat at California Adventure.

One last warning - there are a couple of dining options at Downtown Disney us overweight folks might want to avoid. I saw the chairs at Catal, and they don't look like a good option for heavier people. They look pretty breakable. And I ate INSIDE at Naples, but I saw the patio chairs and I wouldn't have fit in them. That would have been really embarrassing.

Overall, Disneyland is a great place to visit. And they do go out of their way to make sure everyone can do most of the rides. I know it's stressful to go on vacation when you're obese, but hopefully with these tips you can not worry so much and have some fun!!

And I know people worry about being made fun of. Nobody made fun of me the whole trip. And there are lots of Disneyland employees who are really large. And remember, even though it hurts when people judge you, they're the jerks, not you.

Good luck.

I found the most problems in 2005 at MK over the other newer parks.
The most uncomfortable ride at MK was Astro Orbiter - I didn't find it Pooh Size friendly. I learned to turn sideways going through the turnstyles and on the real tight ones, I would try to make it hit my legs by getting on my tip toes.

Not sure if anyone has said it, but the biggest problem I had was the Muppet Show. The seats were REALLY tight. I'm a 24 and most of it is in my hips and hind-end. Other than that, it was pretty good.

Yes, I'm a 30/32 and can't fit in the Muppets seats. I have to sit on the edge.

Has anyone tried California Screamin or the other rides mentioned above that may not be pooh friendly? I really wanted to try California Screaming - I am a 22 and DH is a big dude.......anyone?

You will be fine. There is plenty of room in those seats.

Is Disney's CA that much different in the size of the rides?

Not really, although there are a few to avoid.

Has anyone tried California Screamin or the other rides mentioned above that may not be pooh friendly? I really wanted to try California Screaming - I am a 22 and DH is a big dude.......anyone?

I'm a DL girl. DH and I go there way more than WDW since we live in CA. I am what is typically termed "super-pooh-sized" and I carry most of my weight in my stomach, butt, hips and thighs although I have a fairly large chest as well.

Rides that DID NOT work for me:
Maliboomer - Has overshoulder harness with a seatbelt that goes between your legs and buckles into the harness. The belt was not long enough.
Orange Stinger - Seats are SMALL. I wouldn't even try it.
Mulholland Madness - This is an "off-the-shelf" Wild Mouse style coaster. Seats are small with a lap belt. It didn't work for me.
Tea Cups - The center wheel cut into my stomach and the friction from the turning was uncomfortable. I won't go again.
Autopia - The wheels of the cars hit mid-stomach for me. I fit but it wasn't the most comfortable ride.

DH and I pretty much do everything else. We LOVE Splash and California Screamin' and Space is my favorite.

Space Mountain - I always ride in the front row and have no problem. Seats are side-by-side and have individual lap bars. They come down as far as you need them to and are fine if they click once. Mine doesn't come down as far as DH's but I've never had a problem. There is a little mesh bag on the console in front of you for your things so that is taken care of and there is plenty of leg room. I've never tried a back row. These are easy to get out of as well.

California Screamin' - Each car has two rows of two side-by-side seats. I always ride in the front row of the car for the extra leg room. This is an overshoulder harness. It comes down over your head as far as you need it to and I was able to close mine several clicks despite my large chest. I felt very secure. This ride also has the mesh bag for your stuff and it doesn't affect your leg room. The car is easy to get out of.

Splash Mountain - Single person seats, four to a log. Front row has pretty decent leg room and you are pretty secure in there once you sit down. It can be a bit of a tight squeeze trying to wiggle out. I also like the back seat as you can sit really far back and fully extend your legs to the sides of the seat in front of you. There are metal handholds to the side of your seat. I get wetter in the back than the front. In the front seat, you mostly have to be concerned about turning the corner half way through the ride as you will get fully sloshed on your right side. The descent into the Briar Patch doesn't get you very wet in the front but you get lots of spray in the back. Remember that the logs are pretty low so it can be difficult to clambor out of the front AND back seats. I am less than graceful when doing it and you load and unload at the same place so everyone in line is watching you heave yourself out of the log.

I've ridden just about everything else in both parks so let me know if you have any questions about anything else.

Have fun!

Just got back from a 3-day trip. I am 5'2" inches, 300 pounds, and a bottom heavy female (size 28-30 bottom, size 24-26 tops), which is the bane of turnstyles -- wide hips, big front and bottom, and being short that's all right at turnstyle height.

Reports on individual rides, such that I remember, are below:

Magic Kingdom

WDW Railroad -- I boarded at Main Street. There were two turnstyles, and no conveniently obvious gate. I tried to squeeze through and got half-way and panicked, so I found an employee and asked about gate access. She seemed confused (even when I tried to explain "my hips and butt don't fit through the turnstyle") but did eventually get a gate open. Once I was in, the train itself is no trouble, just bench seats.
It's A Small World -- The turnstyle at the end was pretty tight. I got stuck a bit, so I gave up early and just went through the gate, which was right there and no problem to access.
Peter Pan's Flight -- No problems there with turnstyle or the ride vehicle. My dad, incidentally, is not good with small places at all, being claustrophobic. The CMs put down the bar, and he asked for them to leave it real loose, so it practically wasn't closed at all.
Country Bear Jamboree -- Turnstyle was a little tight. I did some spin-wiggle act and got through without excessive fuss.
Pirate's of the Carribean -- No turnstyles! Just walk on through the open entry lanes. Boats were fine, bench seats there. We did have all the kids on one side, and all the fairly heavy adults on the other, which was poor boat planning on our parts, but aside from listing a bit we were fine.
Jungle Boat -- I can't even remember if there was a turnstyle, so if there was, it was no trouble. The boat is bench seating so that was fine as well.
Enchanted Tiki Birds -- Turnstyle fine, and the bench seats were fine.
Haunted Mansion -- Tight turnstyle that required wiggling. The gated entrance is NOWHERE NEAR the turnstyles, either, so if you decide it's too tight a squeeze, you have to walk all the way back out again, and around the corner, to the accessible entrance.

Epcot

Spaceship Earth -- No issues here.
Living with the Land -- No issues. I actually ended up in the front row of an accessible boat, so there was a ramp for scooters to roll down into the large front area. So there wasn't even a step down into the boat, just a stroll down the ramp.
Journey Into Imagination -- Turnstyle fine. I had problem getting into the vehicle (it was my first experience with a 'narrow molded door entry' that some rides have) and panicked a bit. If I was taller it would have been thigh height, and I could've easily gone in sideways, but instead it was butt/stomach/hip height so I had to squeeze a bit. Then it was fine inside the vehicle.
Universe of Energy -- No problem. Don't remember a turnstyle but there was probably one. Bench seating in the vehicles.
Soarin' -- was a little nervous with my big hind end and sitting next to
someone else and encroaching on them. For reference on seating here and below, when I ride Air Tran I always upgrade to business class as I'm not sure how I'd fit in coach seats, and I just barely fit their seat belts without an extender. Anyway, there is plenty of seat belt on the ride, and if I stood up a little I could see past my hips to buckle it up (though I swear I am seatbelt-challenged in general, even when I can see!) and I didn't feel like I was encroaching too much on the person next to me, the seats were actually roomy. Well, relatively speaking!
Test Track -- Again, I was nervous going into this ride. I asked for the front row, and got put next to a woman in the middle seat. I was right by the door. The seat belt is a harness-type, like in cars. There is plenty of slack in it, and I stood up a little to latch it in, but the car started moving pretty quick and I was flustered and having issues. I did manage to get it sorted out before the seatbelt check, which is actually down and around a corner from where you board.
El Rio del Tiempo -- No issues here. Standard bench seats in a boat floating on water deal.
Maelstrom -- Ditto. No issues.

Hollywood Studios

Backlot Tour -- No issues. Bench seats on a bus, and I don't remember any turnstyle sagas.
Great Movie Ride -- No issues. Bench seats, and you go through a molded plastic entry to get to them (as on some other rides -- basically the non-boat rides have this typically) but no problem sliding through sideways.
Muppet Vision 3D -- I went on this show twice. Both times were uncrowded so no one on either side of me. I sat down front and wiggled in okay (but tight) the first time, though the second day I was more toward the back and had issues. I don't know if the seats were smaller, or my butt grew overnight, or if it was just one of those things. A bit of wiggling worked it out in the end, and it was tight but not really uncomfortable.
Indiana Jones -- Bench seats, no turnstyles, no issues.
Animation Tour -- These were my 'winner' as most uncomfortable / tightest seats ever! At first I perched at the front of the seat, but then I wiggled around under the rests, but there were other things on the side and no one was next to me but boy was it uncomfortable. Plus the show wasn't what I thought it would be but that's another post!
One Man's Dream -- Theater seats were tight but workable.
Rock 'n Roller Coaster -- I ended up sitting in the back (even row) which wasn't recommended, but worked okay. Aside from being utterly graceless I got in okay. Seat belt was fine, and so was the drop-down harness but with my chest and belly it didn't go down as far as it could've. That meant my head was more between the harness bars than it should've and bumped some during the ride. But aside from the graceless entry and exit it was okay.
Tower of Terror -- I asked for an aisle seat, though I ended up having a whole row to myself so it didn't matter. Seatbelts plenty big. The seats have a 2-inch tall metal bar separating them so you can encroach on your neighbor, which isn't bad if you have a little kid or someone you're cozy with next to you. Glad I didn't have a stranger there, though.
Toy Story Mania -- Only issue here was the line! It's two-person seating and got sat next to an 11-year-old (ish) girl and it was plenty of space. I think two adults, even big adults, would be fine.

WHEW! Okay, a few odds and ends before I wrap up. The turnstyles into the parks were fine all around, and I usually could scoot through with no issue, even my wide hips fit fine. They seem to be some of the biggest. The restaurants I went to (and I'll list them in a second) were also no problem with seating. In fact, the seating seemed pretty generous, all in all, for the places I ended up going. Chairs without arms were to be had everywhere, and things were nice and sturdy.

Restaurants visited: Electric Umbrella (Epcot), Tangerine Cafe (Epcot),
Sunshine Terrace (Epcot -- I think that was it, whatever was outside Soarin', I had a drink there while waiting for my Fast Pass), Grand Floridian Cafe (Grand Floridian), Backlot Express (Hollywood Studios).

I also took the Monorail, the boat across the lagoon at Epcot, the boat from the MK to the Grand Floridian, and a few trams. All of those forms of transportation were fine, with bench seats. There's also lots of comfy, sturdy seats around the parks, benches and the like.

Overall Impressions

  • Things are pretty generously sized in general, compared to what I was fearing
  • Bench seats are great!
  • Turnstyles can be tricky -- especially in the older MK
  • Theater seats (as opposed to benches) can be tight!

I've lost 80 pounds since July '07 through Weight Watchers, and I finally started feeling confident enough to tackle the Mouse, lol. I'm currently a size 26/28 (I was super-Pooh-sized when I started, obviously) but my losses are consistently 7-12 pounds per month, and our trip is in November/December, so...I'm planning on fitting into a 22/24 by then and finally getting to 299lbs or less (at 5'7").

YOU ARE AMAZING!!:cool1: I started Weight Watchers on 02/11/08 and have lost 45.2 lbs and I would like to lose 20 more by the time I go to Disney on December 12th. You are an inspiration to me:worship:

Hello all. This is my first post. Hold the applause. LOL. I am going to LA in early October and plan a trip to Disney Land. I know this will probably come off as being very “stupid man” like, but as a guy, I’m very confused with women’s sizes and how they relate to their experiences at Disney Land. Sorry. LOL. Not sure how my size correlates with the women sizes here and their reports. I’m 5 foot 10 inches and weigh about 375. I wear a size 3 x shirt and usually 56 inch waist pants if worn around the navel. I’m giving all this detail for the best advice for me. From what I have read, I think Disney Land itself will be no problem (Space Mountain seems iffy though) but I am wondering about California Adventure. California Screamin’ and Maliboomer specifically.

I am going to ask this in another thread since this one isn’t about Universal, but if anyone has any experiences about Universal Hollywood and being overweight, I would love to hear about it, specifically The Mummy.

Thanks in advance!

:welcome: to the DIS!!!

You are taller than I am but probably smaller around since your weight is more spread out. I think you would be fine on Space Mountain and I'm sure California Screamin' won't be a problem either since those harnesses come down over your shoulders. Maliboomer was an issue for me because I carry my weight very low and the seat belt was not long enough to come up over my bottom section to attach the plastic shield. Frankly, I've not seen many "pooh-sized" people ride that one.

Universal Orlando is a bust for the pooh-sized. All of the rides were a tight, tight squeeze a few years ago when I was smaller and they would be a total no-go if I were to go now. The Mummy was especially small. Even the Jurassic Park ride with its' bench seats was a tight fit because there is NO leg room. Honestly, I don't waste my money there anymore due to their lack of accessibility for differently sized people.

If you are looking for a great studio tour, check out Warner Bros. We did the VIP tour and it was 2.5 hours on a 12-person tour for about $45. It was incredibly interesting and DH and I plan to go back.

PM me if you have any other questions about SoCal. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the report, it's great!

I'm also a Pooh sized chick at a size 22/24. I had no problems with any of the rides I went on. But to save myself from tired feet and aching back I rent a wheelchair. It saved me from being tired and not being able to walk by the end of the day. The times that I did walk to the rides I had CMs who would open the gate for me and smile as I walked through. Not one CM made me feel because I am Pooh sized and needed some extra room to get through. I sure do love me some Disney!

Im a big girl around the size 20 range and Almost 6'0 tall and I had no problems walking around the park and getting into rides. Now I walk all day at work so that might have been a factor when it comes to walking around. But I wore my crocs and went at it like a trooper :D!

Could someone give me an idea on the rides in Fantasyland in DL. I would really like to ride with my little ones. I'm a size 26, 250# and short!

I'm not sure what the Pirates Lair on Tom Sawyer Island is, but how about that?

Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh?

Donald's Boat and Roger Rabbits Car Toon Spin?

Astro Orbitor?

I know that's a lot, but any info would help.

The ONLY ride I have ever had trouble with in DL was the Tea Cups...my belly didnt fit between me and the wheel in the center. The time before the last time I was at DL I was over 300lbs and rode everything except the tea cups. Now I weigh 158lbs and will be doing the Teacups for sure!
