Doing Disney overweight

Sporting goods stores sell walking and running socks that have extra padding in the heels and under the toes. They also remove moisture from the feet. I've always drudged on without an ECV, but have needed one desperately.

The good socks and good shoes has postponed my misery until day 3 instead of mid-morning on day 1. I've also found that muscle cream helps alot for when you get back to your room.

Good Luck!

So does taking a natural anti-inflammatory and a couple of tylenol 8's (caplets)twice a day, once at about lunch and then before bed or dinner which ever works for you. Zyflamend (soft gels)is the name of the anti-inflammatory I take, I get it at the health food store, it's what I started taking it in place of the perscriptions (slipped discs a couple of years ago) that FDA put out the warnings about. It works really well for me.

How much have the cost of renting a EVC gone up?? I figure we would rent one for my mom from the boardwalk inn (I think that's the name of it) or one of the rental places off site.

The rental ones at the parks have gone up to $45 a day... I plan on renting from Buena Vista Scooter rentals and they are $30 a day

Please tell me about these Merrell shoes. What do they look like?

I have Crocs, which I love, but I have some kind of foot pain going on with my right foot and I think I'm going to need a lot of cushioning on the ball of the foot.

I just ordered Merrill Maipo's tonight. I am a die-hard sneaker wearer but I didn't want to wear sneakers at WDW this August for fear that once they got wet, I'd be wearing nasty, stinky, wet sneakers all week. These look very much like sneakers and according to their description, are very supportive and are meant to get wet and dry quickly. Probably won't have them for a week or so, and then who knows when I'll get to wear them, but I'll try to post on the boards once I've had a chance to try them out. BTW, I also ordered a pair for my DD12.

Anyone out there own Merrell Maipos?

hi

thanks for everyones advice it has made me feel alot better. im a uk size 22/24 (don't know what that is in the us?) and i was getting worried about not fitting in the rides. i want to be able to go on the rides with the kids (no rollercoasters) so this thread has helped to feel better.

thanks

My family is going to Disney next month. I have never been (my dh has years ago) and neither have my children. I am overweight (size 24) and am wondering about larger people riding the rides. I would like to be able to ride some rides with my daughter. I am concerned about the seat sizes as well as any bars that might come across you (lock into place) to secure you in the seat.

Any information will be helpful. Thank you so much!

several years ago on oprah there was a mom on their she had lost weight for one of oprah's weight loss shows but the reason she did was because she couldn't ride the ride's at disney so oprah paid for her to go again so she could ride them with her daughter she was a single parent had saved along time for her and her daughter to go and she got their she couldn't ride hardly anything their her daughter had wanted to ride the tea cup's but mom couldn't so the little girl wouldn't with out her mom but i think disney must of been embarrassed about this and quietly changed the rides to acommadate bigger people because i'm bigger then that mom was and i can fit on everything their comfortably so can my dh and he's a size fifty waist and six x shirt on and he usually rides with our dd or ds and the are not small children were all poohsize:lmao: love this even at the water parks at blizzard beach they have a family raft ride they we can do as a family:banana:

How was your vacation? I hope all the posts put your mind to ease. That is one thing we love about Disney. The rides at DL and DW accomodate pooh sizes. When we went to DW in 2006 my DH and I were both Pooh size and it didn't matter. We have not been so fortunate at parks like Six Flags. :sad1:

I'm going to Disney in December. I'm 6-4 330. Will I be able to ride all the rides I want (Tower of Terror, EE, Rock and Roller Coaster)? Thanks

Yes, you'll be able to ride almost everything there. I can only think of one thing that you MIGHT not be able to ride and that would be the tea cups. :rotfl: You probably wouldn't want to do that any way.
My DH is 6'4 and about 250, and he THINKS, he's been on them, but couldn't say for sure. I will say that he rode everything your talking about riding and then some, so no worries there.

I think that's ONE of the things I love most about Disney, no matter your weight/and size there's going to be rides you'll be able to ride. I'm very pooh sized, and I'm only 5'7 and I didn't find any ride that I couldn't get on and enjoy. I did feel the Behind The Seeds ride and It's A Small World=IASW were a bit uncomfy but not un-doable <--- is that a word? :confused3
I certainly wouldn't skip either just because my bum is a bit TO big for the seats. ;)

FWIW, my little brother got back from IOA recently. He said they have changed some of the rides to accomodate Pooh sized patrons. SOme of the rows of the roller coasters have been changed to accomodate big people. Nice to see it.[/quote]

I love your wording "Pooh size patrons"! I am going to have to remember this quote!

When we took our first trip to WDW I was worried I would not be able to ride the rides with my girls but to my surprise I was able to go on every one I wanted to. I had started losing weight in Feb. 07 just so that I could ride the rides. I lost 40lbs by nov. 07 but I am not small by any means at size 20 It is nice to see that Disney cares enough to make this that will accomodate us pooh size people. Now I have a question what IOA stand for????
:confused3

I'd think at a size 20, you shouldn't have any issues, but may still consider getting the socks IF you plan to do commando touring for more than 4 or 5 days. I started going to Disney at age 23, and size 22 and remember that my feet bothered me then after several days of touring with no extra precautions with my footwear.

As for IOA, that is Universal Studios - Island of Adventure.

This has helped soo:crowded: o sooo much. Although i am worried being almost 6'0 and 250 im not as plump as i am stalkish with a few beans added in key areas::rotfl: It awesome that WDW has made adjustments to accommodate lovely ladies and gents like us who have had wayyyy to many bowls of gumbo and crawfish bisque

I had to go back further in the thread to see what you meant by the sock comment. Thank you for the info I am going to have to look in to the socks. I know that by the time my sister-in-law and got back to the room after opening and closing each park each day we were there my feet definetly hurt. :thumbsup2

Does anyone know if the Haunted Mansion rehab from a little while ago included an update to the old turnstiles? I got caught in that one a few years ago and was so embarrased. Then we went to country bear jamboree and I was stuck in that one too....I thought I'd die of shame....as there were people behind me waiting both times....

On our last trip to Orlando, I was probably about a size 20. I had no problems fitting at WDW at all, other than having to go thru some of the turnstiles sideways. I do remember that at Universal/Islands of Adventure, they had certain rows that had bigger seats. I sometimes needed that because I'm "chesty".

Our local amusement park is a different story. The last time I was there (2 years ago), I didn't fit in one of the rides because the chest harness wouldn't go down far enough. The alarm on the ride kept going off, and the employee came around and checked everyones harness. When he got to me, he very loudly told me I was the problem, and that I couldn't ride. I was absolutely mortified. :sad1:

I had taken a fanny pack with me on my last trip to Orlando, and it caused some problems because it added so much more bulk to my waist. I think a cross-boy messenger bag (like the Baggallinni messenger) would have probably worked better for me.

On another note, I had gastric bypass surgery earlier this year, and I've lost almost 70 lbs so far. I'm hoping my trip next year will be a lot more comfortable due to the weight loss. And hopefully my feet and bum knee won't hurt as much since I won't be carrying so much excess weight around anymore.

This will be my first trip to WDW. I've wanted to go for a long time, but never thought I'd be able to do anything because of my size, even though I'm in my 20s. But I've lost 80 pounds since July '07 through Weight Watchers, and I finally started feeling confident enough to tackle the Mouse, lol. I'm currently a size 26/28 (I was super-Pooh-sized when I started, obviously) but my losses are consistently 7-12 pounds per month, and our trip is in November/December, so...I'm planning on fitting into a 22/24 by then and finally getting to 299lbs or less (at 5'7").

CONGRATS!!!! I did DW last year at about 270 and had no issues with anything (I am 5'6") and this October, I might try those damnable teacups coz I had a tummy tuck and my former 28-30 size bottom is now a 22/24. I'm very excited.

Keep up the good work!!

btw, my first DW trip saw me at 450 pounds...needless to say, I rode nothing that didn't have a bench seat...oh, wait, i did, too. I wasn't passing up the HM. I was able to ride whatever I tried then, too.

If I could give any piece of advice, I think it would have to be...

DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT!

I know, I know. It's so much easier said than done. But really, WDW is a wonderful place that is very accommodating. I'm 5'9", and... well, let's stick to saying I'm a size 26. ;)

My grandmother is 5'7", and around 330 pounds. My uncle is gosh... Probably 6', and a good 400lbs, if not more.

The teacups can be a problem. I went on with my "niece" one year, who was about 7 at the time. For me, it was all about my knees and I was very uncomfortable, but for her, I would do it all over again :lovestruc (My best memory from that trip is skipping with her from Peter Pan to the teacups :rotfl: )

My uncle is a big fan of ToT and EE. RnR is a bit hard on his back, but if his back was better, he would probably still be going on that too!!

My grandmother and I always sit next to each other. The only exception to this has been Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom. We absolutely cannot sit next to each other on that, so we request that we each have a separate seat. (The way it is set up is that, there are several (maybe 5 or 6) sets of seats - each set seating two.)

Other than that, we always do everything together, whether it be BTMRR, PoTC, SplMtn, PP, WtP, IASW, HM... She won't go on Space though. That is a very, very tricky ride to maneuver out of. I request seat 1 or 4. TI've sat in the others, but they are very uncomfortable with my knees. At least with 1 or 4, my knees are able to be more "free". The CM is usually extremely kind about it, and will just say "please wait for one moment".

As for Epcot... I think the most worrysome ride is Mission: Space. It can get awfully tight. She went on it once, and felt very claustrophobic. We weren't able to be together then, because she was in a scooter. She hasn't been on it since, even with the non-spinny version being in place. We can both sit two to a seat on Spaceship Earth with no problem, sit together on Soarin... I think the only thing that was remotely uncomfortable were the seats at Impressions de France, but that is a little fuzzy to me. Overall, Epcot is an A+ on the "Plus size" factor in my book. (I never went to Epcot with my uncle)

DHS.. My grandmother used to love ToT, but once they added the "It's-totally-random-how-many-times-you-fall" thrill and we were dropped 6 times, she isn't a big fan anymore. My uncle loves it, and we had no problems sitting together. I haven't been to TSM yet to speak of anything there. If I recall correctly, it felt like the Little Mermaid show had seats a little low, so that was fun getting out. Sounds Dangerous and The Muppets have tight seats, but it's all in the maneuvering. At DHS, my grandmother loves Star Tours, and would probably ride it all day if she could

DAK... The biggest obstacle is KRR, IMO. And btw, my uncle LOVES EE. :thumbsup2 I remember the first time I went on it, I caught him going on... for the fourth time in a row (during evening EMH)

I'm sure by now the CMs understand, so don't be afraid. I know, like I said, it's easier said than done but Disney has definitely planned, and strives so hard to not turn anyone away due to their weight, disability, or anything else. So try not to worry about it and have the time of your life with the mouse! I wish I could be there too!!!
