Doing Disney overweight

My family is going to Disney next month. I have never been (my dh has years ago) and neither have my children. I am overweight (size 24) and am wondering about larger people riding the rides. I would like to be able to ride some rides with my daughter. I am concerned about the seat sizes as well as any bars that might come across you (lock into place) to secure you in the seat.

Any information will be helpful. Thank you so much!

Just do not worry at all. Disney is a place where children and over weight people frequent together. You need not have any worries..

Could someone give me an idea on the rides in Fantasyland in DL. I would really like to ride with my little ones. I'm a size 26, 250# and short!

I know that's a lot, but any info would help.

Donald's Boat is a play area so no ride to worry about. I'm pretty sure it's restricted to just the kids running around.

Pooh is fine for everyone, I would think. Both the front and back rows have plenty of room.

I remember Roger Rabbit being a tight squeeze but doable. Honestly, I've not ridden it in several years as I didn't really like it.

The Astro Orbitor should be fine for you and one other child but I wouldn't try more than that or your spaceship won't fly. You might need to ride twice.

I've never been to Tom Sawyer's Island so nothing to add there. I have heard that the play areas are a tight squeeze for the average adult but don't know for sure.

As the PP said, the Tea Cups were the only ride that was really uncomfortable for the same reason listed. Alice in Wonderland is a tight squeeze for two adults side-by-side in the same row but you should be fine with one adult/one child. Everything else is totally fine.

BTW, I'm quite a bit more Pooh-sized than you and have had no problems so you should be fine. Have a great time!!

I"m a 22 and I fit the adult rides, (I didn't ride dumbo LOL so I don't know about the little rides)

My mom is slightly smaller then me. The only place she had trouble was Space Mountain. She has longer legs than me, but smaller size wise. I was in the front and had plenty of room she was in the middle seat and was a bit cramped, but the bar went down fine she just had to arrange her legs. I would ask for the front of the car. Other than that the only thing is like haunted mansion they want to put three to a car but if you're large you need to be two to a car. That's all I really know since I've only done Disney land and then MK at WDW.

The ONLY ride I have ever had trouble with in DL was the Tea Cups...my belly didnt fit between me and the wheel in the center. The time before the last time I was at DL I was over 300lbs and rode everything except the tea cups. Now I weigh 158lbs and will be doing the Teacups for sure!

I am a size 22 and short. I have never had a problem on any ride. Rock n Roller coaster is the only one that I am not comfortable. I am short and uh busty so the harness sits high on me and my head gets knocked around. I had trouble with walking the whole park the first couple visits but after going every weekend for a year, its a breeze!

the only ride i have had a problem with is the tea cups as previously posted. other than that, i've enjoyed everything at disney. the turnstiles can be a little tough but not impossible for me.

as for getting around all day - unless you have a medical condition you should be ok if you take it easy and rest when needed. up until last year i've always walked each park no problem. tired? sure! but it was a good tired. unfortunately, my back issues have become more severe and i am no longer able to walk/stand for any significant period of time (i need to have my spine fused) so i did end up using an ecv after 1/2 day at dhs nearly had me bedridden for the remainder of the vacation. not a good experience at all but hopefully i'll be back to walking the parks again soon! (i felt very self concious on the ecv - like everyone was looking at me thinkg "look at the fat chick who can't even walk the parks" - not a pleasant experience to say the least.

I have the pleasure of carrying some extra fluff too - The first time I went to Disney I was a size 22 and I fit in everything fine. There are some turnstiles in the Magic Kingdom that were pretty scary though, but you can just go through the handicap gate that's right next to it without any issues.

I am also a size 22/24 and have never had any problems with any ride or the walking. DH is a walker and walks faster and take longer strides than I so I am always trying to keep up. I had knee surgery a couple years ago and did Disney two months later. I have never even had trouble at the turnstiles. I think we have been on every ride even Dumbo. DH has even said he has never had any problem. We are usually up and in the parks at rope drop and there until Extra Magic Evenings. So I don't know if it is just us or we just don't let it bring us down.

thank god - i'm a plushy too and this past summer was embarrassed when i went on a ride at wonderland only to be told that the seat had to be clicked twice not just once.

not that i need someone to tell me i'm plushy just didn't need it in front of an entire line of people.

I jusat got back... unfortunately, I have ballooned to 6'1 and 380 lbs (although I still wont rent an ECV gosh Darn it). I was terrified I wouldn't fit... I have had it happen at IOA and at Six Flags. Had no troubles with Everest, with Rock and Roller Coaster or with Tower of Terror. Disney goes out of there way to make it safe for all and to let most people ride the ride. I am sure some can't fit, but the vast majority can.

FWIW, my little brother got back from IOA recently. He said they have changed some of the rides to accomodate Pooh sized patrons. SOme of the rows of the roller coasters have been changed to accomodate big people. Nice to see it.

I'm pooh sized too, approx size 24 now but use to be much bigger. The only ride I've every had issues with is Jimmy Neutron at Universal, because the bar that comes down crushes my tummy and I ended up really bruised.

I am glad I found this thread, I am overweight and working hard to correct that. We were at Disney in Dec 07 and I did not have any trouble with any ride, then I don't do wilder rides due to other health issues. I did do a lot of exercises on my recumbant bike to strengthen my legs and some strength exercises for my very bad back and that seems to have paid off as I did not need to rent anything to get around the parks, thought it was a real possiblity. I did have to take extra pain meds, but that was with the approval of my doc. I am now working hard to be thinner for my next Disney trip in Sep 2009, provided nothing financial prevents the trip.

I highly recommend getting into condition prior to your trip, no matter your weight, take walks around the block or a park each night after dinner, park far from the doors in stores etc, just get in some extra stepping, will do wonders and you will be able to enjoy your trip to Disney much more.

I'm 6'7" and about 350. The only ride that I have physically been unable to ride is the refurbished Space Mountain. Since they changed from bench seats to molded seats, I cannot get the bar in place. Oh, and the Astro-Orbiter (kids both had to go with mama).

Teacups are a tight fit, but most rides I can manage by criss-crossing my legs in front of me. With the 5yr old, on Big Thunder mtn. Railroad, the bar is about four inches above him, so basically I have to hold him in place with my arm, which works.

Splash mountain, I was able to sit on the rear seat with very little problems. Others: Matterhorn, Pirates, Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, Winnie The Pooh (a little cramped), Buzz Lightyear, Star Tours (takes a little extra time to get the belt latched, but fit just fine), Mr. Toad's, Roger Rabbit, Monster's Inc, all fine. Soarin' Over California, Grizzly River Run were fine. We haven't hit Indiana Jones this time yet (it's been closed), but I fit fine in that last summer.

I've yet to try the California Screamin' (wife hates those kinds of rollercoasters) so I don't know about that. Haven't gone on the Pixar ride at CA either.

The girth I can get away with on most things, but being 6'7" is what's a drag. Although with Space Mountain, neither helps. (when I tried space mountain last summer, the bar required my knees to be "inside" it, and they just wouldn't go).

ok, I'm a size 26 (3X) and DH wears a 44 pants under the gut (2X)...we don't have any trouble riding together.

Matter of fact...I insisted that we ride in separate Dumbo elephants...and the CM let me know that we would have fit together. I don't see how though.

In some ways, I think our "filling" the cars is actually a plus, as we don't move about a lot...just what the ride intended.

One other thought though...according to what you find comfortable...there won't be space between you, but its definitely not painful.

I was concerned last year b/c I am 6'1" and about 400lbs. Dh is also "Pooh" sized. We were able to ride everything that we wanted to. The only one I had problem with was Dinosaur in AK b/c the way the seats were molded. I fit but with the shaking of the ride it killed my sides.

I'm also 22/24...have no problems -- rides are Pooh sized, which is one of the other reasons I love Disney, was most nervous about Space MT first time I rode it...but i've been on it many times since..no problem.

Universal/Sea World - had no "fit" problems either

In Florida - went to Busch Gardens/Tampa last year, and had a hard time fitting in the older wooden coaster, wedged in like a piece of cheese, but the newer steel ones i was fine

We just got back from WDW yesterday. I have no trouble on most of the rides being a size 3X. However, there was something new at the Haunted Mansion this time. Most times we can just let the lap bar come down and they never lock it in. This time they insisted that it be locked in. My son was with me in the doombuggy and we had to split up and each get our own car to fit properly. He's 6'4" and over 300 lbs, so the two of us couldn't fit together. Once we were separated we were ok, but somewhat squished by the bar.

My daughter is pregnant and couldn't fit with the bar locked, so she had to leave the attraction. This is the first time they every insisted it locked. Not sure if it was the cast member or a new policy.

My son is a cast member and is going to check it out again this week and let me know. Other than that, I fit on everything ok. The turnstiles at Carousel of Progress are very tight to get thru, but you can bypass them by using the gate there.
