Dog Food Advisor updates its list of Best Dry Dog Foods

Dog Food Advisor is run by a dentist! Not sure if that is good or bad but it is interesting. I was told my my vet and a veterinary cardiologist not to feed any food that has legumes in the first 10 or potatoes in the 1st five ingredients. Some of the top foods on this list do not meet that test.

Have used several brands on this list, like Victor, Canidae, Wellness and diamond. They were all good foods and had no issues with them. Dog just decided didn't like them anymore so I would change. Right now she is on Earthborn Venture Alaskan Pollock and pumpkin. She loves it and there are no peas or legumes in it. One on the list I used but would never go back to is Whole Earth Farms. The second that Purina bought Merrick who made WEF. I changed

My vet just recently pulled my dog of any food that contains peas, pea proteins, legumes (or "pulses") so many of these foods wouldn't work for us, although they may very well be high quality.

What’s the deal with peas? Did they say? I just feed traditional premium dog foods like science diet or Purina proplan. I don’t believe in the grain free nonsense. But DS throws peas off his high chair often & the dogs love them so I just let them eat them. Didn’t know they were bad.

The pea flour and proteins they are using have been determined to be the cause of the heart disease caused by the grain-free feeding. You have to be careful though because I was using a grain-containing Blue Buffalo food and it still had the pea protein in it.

My vet (who has been practicing for over 30 years) says that she has found ProPlan to be a great food for the average dog who is at home all day. Been using it for many years and currently uses it on her 5 dogs she has at home.

As for you son throwing them off the high chair, probably fine in that regard. I think it's the concentrated protein that is pretty high up in the feed and using it for every meal. Too much.
