Twin Cities Marathon Weekend Loony Challenge--Day 1
Just a quick recap of Day 1 of Loony, which was the 10K at 7:15am and the 5K at 8:45am. The weather wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be. Obviously I wish it had been cooler, but the wind kept me from overheating.
I chose to race the 10K because I wanted to start the 5K on time (though Loony challengers have until 9am to start the 5K and still have it count) I managed to finish with about 5 minutes to spare, but it ended up being almost 10 minutes because it took a while to get everyone across the 5K start line.
I decided to walk the 5K because I was pretty wiped from the 10K, and the 5K has a 25 minute/mile minimum pace, so I could go as slow as I wanted. It turned out I was feeling pretty fast at walking, because I ended up with negative splits, and actually ran the last .2 (I always have extra mileage

) at an 11:03 pace (I did this piece at a 10:20 pace in the 10K)
There are definitely pros and cons to the TCMW 10K and 5K. Pros: great crowd support--there's hardly any place where there isn't at least a few people cheering (also a great dogs/mile ratio--I didn't count, but there's lots of dogs), the course is lovely going up and down Summit Ave with all the rich people's houses and the great big trees, and you finish by running down a great big hill toward the state capitol building. Cons: you start by running up a great big freaking hill (and if you do Loony, you get to run up it twice

), they don't even try to give any course etiquette lessons--I know most people will just do what they're gonna do anyway, but it would be nice if the attempt was made to tell runners and walkers where they should be on the course.
