I have a question for all of you Labrador Retriever owners.

I was away for most of the day today. When I came home I noticed, Toby our 5 year old yellow lab, drooling. Drops of saliva formed at the corner of his mouth and drop to the floor. Though he will lick at his mouth and nose as he knows it is there. His nose is a bit drippy at times, but nothing like his mouth. This happened about 5 weeks ago and then went away. He is licking his legs and you know where a lot.

He is about 2 months over due for his routine check up. I will be calling tomorrow.

I thought I would ask you guys to see what you may think before I call the vet in the morning. His food does not contain the dreaded wheat gluten. His dry food is Kibbles and Bits I don't think that was on the recall list. other than the drroling and licking he is about the same as ever.

Lately, it seems that I have been worrying about everything and I don't like the feeling very much. Uhg!

You have come home and found him in "drool" but have you ever witnessed the onset of it. He could have a seizure disorder. Annie and now Jude have had seizures. Both dogs only had them 2 to 5 times a year. The both had prodromes and would come and lean against me, the hind legs would become spastic, the would drool profusely and see unresponsive to verbal stimuli. Annie on occasion would actually seize. Jude just zones out for about 3 minutes and then he gradually regains control over his hind legs, licks his chops repeatedly, seems very tired for about 15 minutes and then he is back to his happy self.

DawnCt1 thanks for responding. He is active otherwise. He saw a rabbit out the window and he just went nuts! I let him out and he was after the rabbit .well as far as his lead would let him go.

Steve, my boyfriend, called and said take him to the vert first thing in the morning, which i had planned to do. he also reminded me that I showed him that Toby had red spots on both sides of his tongue the Saturday the 24th, but he was fine other than the spots.. he always seems to lick at himself.
I asked Steve if we should take him to the animal hospital tonight (see it's the worrier in me) he said no. Call and see the vet tomorrow morning. He is acting ok otherwise.

I just hate being a worrier

Not to minimize your concern, but my dog (also a lab) looks at, or even smells people food, and he begins drooling....

The drool literally drips off both sides of his mouth, and hangs down to the floor sometimes. It is sooooooooooo gross!

Weird that it has come on suddenly, though. Maybe he's walking in or stepping in some sort of irritant, and licking it off himself? Then it might taste bad or hurt his tongue and cause him to salivate?

My dog really salivated a LOT and foamed at the mouth when he tried to eat a toad and it peed in his mouth (SORRY!).

Have you used any chemicals in the yard? On your floors? On your furniture that would irriate his paws or his privates (if he sits in it)?

I'm sure he's fine.... drooling without any other symptoms is weird, but nothing you should lose sleep over. The vet will get to the bottom of it tomorrow.

Good Luck!!!!

My golden does this. It started when we moved to Florida. He has allergies. His nose runs and he drools. It increases as the season changes. Right now, it is bad because everything is in bloom.

Salty food can also cause this. Try starting a new bag of food and see if it helps.

For the past couple of weeks I have mopped my kitchen floor with bleach and hot water.
Yesterday I had my ceptic tank pumped and part f the yard smelled just aweful yesterday afternoon (sorry to be gross) so when he came in just to be on the safe side I wiped his paws with water and dish detergen. (that could be the cause...DUH!) and then I mopped with bleach & hot water.

I hope the dish detergent and water combo (which I probably shouldn't have used) is the culpret.

slapping my hand,,bad pet owner! I just luv him
