An Important Message from the team at Atkins Health & Medical Information Services
It is with deep sadness that we must advise you that as of today Dr. Atkins remains gravely ill, in a coma and on life support. As most of you know, on his way to work Tuesday morning following the late-season snowstorm, Dr. Atkins fell on the slippery sidewalk in front of The Atkins Center. He suffered a major blow to his head and has not recovered from surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. His physician reports that Dr. Atkins' chances of a meaningful recovery are slim. Nonetheless, we are hoping for a miracle and every measure possible is being considered to save his life. Please know that as there are further developments regarding Dr. Atkins' condition we will do our best to keep you informed via our Web site.
In addition to seeing patients daily, Dr. Atkins has focused much of his time on contributing to various writing projects, including this newsletter, and public speaking engagements. At a time when most people are thinking about retirement, Dr. Atkins loved taking on new projects. But even a man with his passion for life and energy could not find enough hours in the day to do everything himself.
For the past few years, as Dr. Atkins planned for a reduced work schedule, the team of experts that make up Atkins Health & Medical Information Services has been there to assist him in his projects. In fact, this team has conducted much of the research you've seen in this electronic newsletter as well as the past few books. He knew that when he retired and was no longer involved on a day-to-day basis, this team would continue to honor the spirit of his teachings. Dr. Atkins supervised the writing of the Dear Friend column below, applying the final touches the night before his accident. It tackles one of the subjects he felt strongly aboutthe evils of sugar in any form, particularly corn syrup.
Our team is committed to the vision of our companyto change the way the world eats to promote good healtha philosophy in which Dr. Atkins truly believes and that guides all of our work. We will continue to pursue that vision in future issues of this newsletter.
