Does WDW still not allow Segway's in the parks?

I know that WDW used to not let you use personal Segway's in the Parks is this still true?

maybe it is like the boats - they only want you to rent from them and not use your own?

my father went on the segway tour, were they teach you how to ride and then you have an hour to go on your own...and they said if you certified to drive them, then you can drive them around there

As far as I know, the general public cannot use them, only the CM's. you can take the Segway Tour/class at Epcot and use them during that time.

The longer Segway tour involves a class inside and then some time to ride in WS, but it's not really on your own. It is sort of a "follow the leader" situation with a tour guide on a Segway.

Segways go too fast to have a lot of them zipping around. Some people with disabilities use them for mobility, but because they are not classified/certified as medical devices, there is no requirement for use of them to be allowed anywhere.

Aren't segways really heavy to carry? Don't they weigh like 300 pounds? How would you physically get it to the park?

With the number of crazy electric vehicle drivers in the parks, I am not sure I want Segways added to the mix. However, I might change my mind if someone gave me a Segway.

Kind of weird, but a Segway ended a friendship I had with someone of 10 years.

He has never been to Disney and he claimed how wrong Disney was for not letting people use them in the parks. I told him that I could understand. If lots of people were using them, people could get hurt. He didn't think so as they don't weight alot.

Anyways, he called me stupid, I took offense - End of story.

I have an office neighbor who has disabilities (Thalidomide syndrome) and uses a Segway to get around here in downtown Knoxville. Segways weigh 70-80 lbs and can go up to 12mph or so (all depends on model - the off-road capable models weigh about 100lb). Fast enough and heavy enough to cause serious collision injury (to self or others) if ridden by an inexperienced 180-200 lb person in a very crowded setting.

I've ridden his (using the beginner key, which limits speed to about 6mph) in an uncrowded (almost empty) square. It takes about 10 minutes to get the basic motions down (shifting your weight basically), and just a little longer for me to feel comfortable.

I'm not sure what Disney's legal stance is on this, but I'm sure they've been tested numerous times by universal accessibility advocates and lobbyists.

There was just an AP article in our local paper yesterday about Segways being banned in all sort of public places like zoos and shopping malls and such due to the liability concerns and their speeds.

I have never seen them used in Disney by anyone other than a castmember and people on the special tours.

Personally, I would not want people to use them because I think they could be dangerous in such a place as Disney. Especially with little ones darting all over the place.

That's a really dumb reason to end a friendship over. I could think of alot of things that could bring me to that point (maybe), but ending it cuz of a disagreement over a Disney World Park service....that's just rediculous IMO.

My neighbor (who I mentioned in my earlier post) recently won a legal decision against a local mall prohibiting him from using his Segway there.

I'm sure Disney has run across this before, so I'd be curious how they approach it.

I personally think allowing untrained people to ride them in public places is an accident waiting to happen (pun intended).

We took the 2 hour tour at Disney, loved them a lot and went to Celebrations, where a place used to rent them out and have gone touring at Cleebrations with a leader. We spent a couple of hours on them. I have a place not too far from me, that will be renting them by the month this summer, and we plan on renting one or two to get around at camping. Only CM's use them at Disney.

She didn't end the friendship because he disagreed with her. She ended the friendship because he called her stupid and she was offended.

What's the line of sight like from a Segway? With so many little kids running around, combined with crowds, wouldn't it be hard to see well enough. Frankly, I was frightened of the people in motorized scooters. A lady just missed me when she tried to cross a busy path, then she ran into someone else. Maybe a certified Segway rider would be safer.

I love the Segways (see below)! However, I'm glad they don't allow them in the parks-sounds dangerous.
