does the "search" ever work?

I wanted to do a little research on some topics, but every time I try the Search button it says it's been disabled. Does it ever work?

I've used the "search" feature either very early in the morning, or very late at night, they are about the only times I have been able to use it.

I have used it before also a couple of times, but mostly it does not work when I want to use it.

The search function disables automatically when the server load threshold is reached. Searching is very CPU and disk intensive (probably because the posts on this site are not fully indexed [that is why sites like GOOGLE, AltaVista, etc., seem to seach the Internet so fast - they search their indexes]). Things get worse when when lots of searches are concurrent.

Like everyone above posted, wait until the demand is less (early in the AM or late in the PM).

The good news is these boards are very popular, and there could be literally 100's of DIS'ers online at any time, and 1000's of Dis'ers / visitors stopping by here per day. That a wealth of information for your reasearch!

I know...I know!! I am addicted to the DIS boards!!

Personally, I think if you have to search in the wee hours only you might as well get rid of search completely. With a board this large the search is more important to me than animated smileys, pics, countdowns etc because there is a LOT of good information here...IF you can find it.

I agree.

It's nice to have all the pictures, stored signatures, countdowns and animated smileys, but if I had to sacrifice one for the other, I'd rather have the search.
