We are looking at booking either with Jetblue or Southwest. Jetblue is 300.00 more expensive, but we have flown them before. Southwest is new to us. We have four young kids, so some form of movies et will be useful. Is southwest worth the savings of 300.00?

No they do not. But, the wonderful thing about Southwest is that you can rebook your fare if the price goes down and save money. I would use the extra cash to buy a portable dvd player, rent a bunch of Redbox movies and go with Southwest.

let's see....
SWA gets you a $300 savings, 2 free checked bags per person (plus carry-on & "personal item") - i don't fly JB, so not sure of their baggage policy.
i agree with pp:
use the savings to buy a DVD player or the like, and you get to keep it after the trip :)

No movies, no audio entertainment. Wi-fi for $8.

This is incorrect. About 75% of Southwest planes offer TV for $5 and Movies for $5. However, you will need to utilize your own WiFi enabled device (iPhone/iPad/Laptop/Tablet, etc) to connect to this service. I utilized it on Sunday on my flight from MCO to BDL and it was definitely worth it.

DALLAS (AP) -- Southwest Airlines Co. is now selling on-demand movies during flights for $5.

The airline said Tuesday that it has launched the service on planes equipped with Internet access, or about 75 percent of its fleet.

Last year, Southwest began streaming live television to passengers' devices. The airline said Tuesday that the new movies and television show episodes will augment eight channels of news and sports bundled together in a new package that costs $5 per day per device.

Southwest said customers don't have to buy WiFi to get the movies and TV shows.

The Dallas-based airline contracts with Row 44 to provide Internet access on its Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 planes.

While Southwest does offer movies they only offer them on 75% of their aircraft (the -700s and -800s). The other 25% (the -300s and -500s) don't have wireless. My DD, who is now 8, has been flying Southwest since she was 3. For every flight we brought a DVD player. That way she could watch the movie of her choice. With 4 children you would need 2 DVDs and they would have to share, but then if you are planning on using the wireless they would have to share the wireless device.

We've been flying SWA for years with now 15 year old DD. We always brought a portable DVD player with us and simply rented movies from our library (at no charge; great if you are on a strict budget).

I rent a movie for around $3 to $4 and download it onto my iPad for flights.

Both SW and Jet Blue let you rebook your fare if the prices go down. However, you don't get cash back from either one. Rather you get a credit that must be used within a year of the original booking date.

I've never been on a SW flight that had any form of entertainment but it could be because I've never flown them for any flight longer than NY to Orlando.

I would definitely recommend downloading your own movies or bring a portable dvd. Flew southwest on sunday on a plane that had movies/tv/internet for a fee and was not impressed at all! The TV was a couple sports and news stations-nothing for kids. There was a very limited selection of movies all pretty old and "b" movies at best. We did purchase the internet and it was slow and had poor service. JetBlue entertainment is awesome!! However, I would not spend $300 extra for it.

I have flown both and if I were in you're situation, I would probably go with JetBlue. I like knowing where I am sitting, there are tvs at each seat, and the snacks are better.

To me, that's not worth spending $300 more. Heck, you can bring your own snacks.

I have been flying with my dd11 since she was 5. We have flown on SW and Delta...I much prefer SW. They didn't have movies, but my dd was entertained by coloring, her (then popular) leap pad and nintendo and now her tablet. She now plays games either on her tablet or iphone. I just remember I always brought plenty of gum (which she still looks for when she flys) as well as snacks...with water purchased after security. I never knew this fact until I purchased with Delta...you can purchase a ticket and be assigned a boarding pass and seat, but it is never guaranteed that you will actually end up with that particular seat (seat assignments just make people feel comfortable).

BTW...I always do the Early Bird Check-In with SW (especially when flying with dd11) as it is only $12.50 and guarantees that I will be checked-in at the 36 hour mark rather than checking in at the 24 hour mark. This way I do not need to stress out about checking in at the 24 hour mark and getting general boarding group (which has happened). It is TOTALLY worth it and hasn't failed us yet!!! :thumbsup2

Now...Given your dilemma...I would definately NOT purchase JB for $300 more. I could never justify a movie for $300. :faint:
