I am a Teller Manager for Wachovia and I LOVE MY JOB!!! I love my PAID TIME OFF, FAMILY CARE TIME and my HOLIDAYS!!!!
I have been in banking for 24 years and have held numerous positions within the bank. I have been everything from a part-time clerk in our backroom operations, to teller (part & full time), roving teller, teller co-ordinator, branch service manager and back to a Teller Manager.
Teller pay is better than it was years ago. By the time you add in all of our holidays, family care time, PTO and savings plan it is better is makes the total packages quite attractive compared to working in a factory or as an office clerk.
As to clothing, you would be expected to dress professionaly. This can get quite expensive, but with consignment shops and the Goodwill you can begin to build a basic wardrobe without spending a fortune. I tell my newhires that you can never have too many black slacks & skirts.
My tellers biggest compaints are sales. You have a monthly goal to reach which can be difficult if you haven't ever had to ask for sales. When I was hired there wasn't any selling, but it is highly expected now.
Also, once you get started into banking if you are good at it, other banks will take notice. If they have openings, guess who they will want to hire? Right now, I have one bank trying to get me to leave and come over to the competition. Think of me tomorrow, they want me to call and discuss with them how much $ and how many PTO days it would take to get me to make a move to them.
I say give teller work a try. You will never know if you like it if you don't try it. Good Luck!!
