Does anyone think DVC needs a new theme

People probably think I am crazy but I think the themes of DVC resorts are too similar. You have:

Beach Florida Resort Themes:
- BCV
- Vero
- HH (Close Enough)
- OKW

and New York Themes
- SSR
- Board Walk

I think that’s why people love the VWL location so much because it is different. And it seems to me that the unusual themes have more popularity:
-Contempory - Futuristic
-Poly - South Pacific Theme
-Animal Kingdom - African Theme

So what themes would you like to see in the future? Or are you all happy with the Golf, Beach, NY themes? I would like to see another Poly (South Pacific), African or South American Theme, or California Theme.

I beg to differ, Boardwalk is based off a turn of the century NEW JERSEY Boardwalk. BCV is based off a New England Style beach resort. So, there are VERY different themes and really only two that are similiar, three if you want to lump in HH with Vero and OKW.

BCV=New England Beach Theme
BWV=Turn of the Century Atlantic City,New Jersey Theme
OKW= Old Key West Florida theme
VWL= North Pacific Railroad hotels
Vero Beach=Beach Resort,not really a theme.
SSR= Saratoga New York.

I think they are pretty diverse. I would love to see a poly DVC but it's highly doubtful.

I would like to see some Western type places - besides WL - California - maybe Spanish. and I don't think that WDW has any thing on their property that is the NorthEastern - like Wright????

also some other countries type - Swedish lodges, castles like in GF or France, etc ....

I think OKW - is surpose to fl, beaches, and southern - although a DVC version of PO would be nice too....

DVC and WDW are definitely more of the hotels of Eastern US than any other part.

with the Polyn and CSR being the exception - CBR is in the Eastern part just not US

How about a DVC resort with an old west theme like Dodge City, The Alamo or something?

They could have a "Tombstone" style shootout in the courtyard and the kids could learn how to fire a real Colt .45 or skin a rabbit.

Then again, maybe not.

How about a winter lodge theme -- and put it in Colorado or Utah!

I think that if DVC gets a new theme it should be the theme of building more off-site resorts. Most people buying into timeshares don't want to visit WDW every year. If they want to keep expanding, they'll have to increase the options.

(I agree that SSR, Boardwalk and BCV have similar themes. Everyplace up there in that general part of the country seems the same to me, too.)

I don't think they are similar at all.

The place the BW is themed on is so different than SSR. Besides the fact that the BW theme is NJ - saying they are similar because they are both from NY is like saying Manhatten is the same as the Finger Lakes region.

How about a Dust Bowl theme? Maybe a nice flat Iowa theme?

Eh. I'm happy with the themes so far. I think they are doing a good job.

I thought that by "theme" you meant a new theme song. That "If you believe in magic" song gets on my nerves on the Disney channels in the resorts.

LOL!

(I'm a former radio person, so that would explain my misunderstanding.)

Spiceycat, wouldn't Sarasota Springs fall into the category of Northeastern U.S.??

1. Like poohpiglet3 I also thought you meant that annoying jingle. Ugh. I really think it's cheesy.

2. Regarding resort themes, sometimes I pass the time brainstorming to myself what type of new resort theme Disney should do next. I've come up with a few ideas, but nothing seems to have enough legs (advertising jargon for versatility in variation) to meet Disney standards. I guess that's why I'm not an imagineer. :teeth:

I'm very happy with the themes at the DVC resorts.
That being said, it is fun to speculate.... I have always thought a 'haunted house' theme would be awesome. The possibilities for intricate theming would be virtually endless.

Of course, if it was themed too well, many kids would not really want to sleep there.... :teeth:

There is some similarity because the DVC resorts were all inspired by lodgings of the first half of the 20th century. However, the archtiectural styles are all quite different.

Only two of them -- Old Key West and Eagle Pines -- have Florida themes, and those two are wildly different (and one of those two has not been built).

The resorts and their themes are:
  • Disney's Old Key West Resort -- Caribbean influenced, Key West style Victorian
  • Disney's Vero Beach Resort -- Atlantic Ocean beach village, without a specific theme
  • Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort -- 1940s South Carolina "Low Country" hunting and fishing lodge
  • Disney's BoardWalk Villas -- 1930s urban Atlantic seaside village
  • The Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge -- early 1900s railroad workers' lodge, pre-dating the adjacent grand National Park Service lodge
  • Disney's Beach Club Villas -- early 20th century Mid-Atlantic "stick-style" seaside resort
  • Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa -- Turn-of-the-century (circa 1900) Upstate New York grand resort destination
  • Unnamed, unbuilt Disney Vacation Club at Eagle Pines -- Spanish influenced "old world" style resort architecture of Addison Mizner's early 20th century Florida hotels

I've always thought that a Bavarian/German theme would be great. Several of the old Disney movies, mostly the ones with Princesses, fit in (Snow White, for example) and you could somehow work the 7 Dwarfs into the theme. All the different castles-the Beast's Castle, etc. Wouldn't that be fun?

Well, Sarasota would technically be Florida, tho lots of NorthEasterners may have retired there. And yeah, Saratoga, would be New York, but those of us that live North and East of there kinda consider that the MidWest almost.

Heck, when I moved from Maine to Massachusetts folks back home would kid me about living in the Deep South :p . All a matter of perspective, I guess.

There is an old Maine joke about the term "Yankee":
In most of the rest of the world, a Yankee is someone from the USA.
In the Southern and Western US, a Yankee is someone from the Northeast, and maybe the Midwest (Union states after all).
In the MidWest and Mid-Atlantic states, a real Yankee is someone from New England (and no longer has a pejorative tone to it).
I much of New England, a Yankee is someone from Northern New England (ME, NH, VT).
And in Northern New England, we know that a Yankee is a baseball player from New York City.

DVD had property for Newport Beach which Marriott purchased and developed. Marriott also put a timeshare at DLP.

One thing that I've noticed is that - in general - the themes of DVC resorts are less, hmmm, adventurous than that of WDW resorts. Not that the level of theming is any lower, but the overall effect is more laid-back. To me, this makes sense; WDW resorts should be the settings for fantasies, an escape from reality: Polynesia, Deep South, Africa, Upper-class Victorian, the Future (well, the future as of 1970), etc. DVC resorts are a Home Away From Home....

For example, I think MG's idea of a "haunted" resort would be great for a WDW resort - but I'm not sure if that's what I want for the next 50 years. That's why I think that DVC tends to use established resort "templates" for their resorts....

YMMV.

Exactly what I think the original poster is pointing at, yes, they are all based on varying arcitecture, but, there's nothing very 'stand out' about the ones at WDW with the exception of VWL. BCV blends into BC, Boardwalk, while based on a different geography, isn't all that different, neither is OKW, and SSR. As you're pointing out DrTomorrow, they are all very laid back and tend to blend in an outside impression because of that.

And on that I agree, a radical departure in architecture would be refreshing, no not something outlandish, but maybe based on someplace other than the contintental US.

As far as a Wright themed resort, Disney does have one out there- The Grand Californian. A companion DVC property there sure wouldn't be unwelcome.

The Grand Californian at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim is based on the Arts and Crafts Architectural Style of Greene and Greene, not on the Prairie Style Architecture of Frank Floyd Wright. That said, there is a similarity between the two styles.

I like the spanish theme idea someone had a few posts back. There are absolutely zero houses/buildings/etc built like those in the southwest US around these parts. I'd love to stay in a place like that!

To kinda go like Epcot.
How about a German village resort, or maybe a UK resort.

Just a thought.
