We collected Disney pins for about three or four years. We have quite a few of them, surely over one hundred of them. When we went last, October, we noticed that not as many guests were wearing their lanyards. Our kids weren't wearing theirs either. I am interested to know what the good people of Dis Board think about this situation. Was pin collecting just a fad or is it still going strong or possibly just in a lull. I have to admit that I was glad to not have the added expense of buying at least $100 worth of pins on the last trip.

I think they are still pretty popular. We took our first trip in Nov 2004 and my boys each recieved a lanyard and starter pin with our package. They noticed in the parks many people (children as well as adults) with many pins. They each had their own money and bought one other pin, but wanted more (kinda expensive). Over several months I bought 20-25 pins on ebay and on Xmas eve I supprised them with the whole lot and they were just thrilled. We played a Disney trivia game so they could take turns picking first, It was a lot of fun. So I hope in my round about way I helped in answering your questions. If you dont really want them anymore you may want to consider selling them on Ebay, you would be amazed what some people will pay. If it were me I would keep them, I know I hope my DS's will hold on to theirs and pass them on to their children. Sorry my reply was so long, I tend to ramble on. Melissa

I suggest asking on the collectors board here on the DIS what most people are doing. I know we are still collecting.

My sister and I still collect pins. Pins are our main souvenirs from our trips to Disney. It does get very expensive. As for pin trading, it does not seem to be as popular as it used to be. I haven't seen too many guests wearing lanyards this past summer.

Just a thought...we don't wear lanyards when we go to the parks because they're uncomfortable and sometimes the pins get knocked off. We take our pins in our backpacks and we trade with the CM whenever we can. Maybe others are doing the same?

DS just started collecting pins in October. It took exactly ONE day for him to decide the lanyard was 1) itchy 2) hot and 3) heavy. So the lanyard spent the majority of the trip locked in the safe in the room!

He bought a bunch of pins that he hasn't looked at since we came home, so I think maybe we won't be buying very many next time. We did get a package of the locking backs to keep the pins from getting lost, but it is a pain to unlock them for trading.

pin trading can become a major disease...just check out the Downtown disney pin trader location

I do collect them, but I haven't had a chance to try trading yet. I have gotten most of mine off ebay.

IMHO -

Pin trading and buying has decreased drastically - I can see DTD Pin Traders to be replaced by another store in the future. It will probably be relocated to a smaller store someone on property. There are still pin traders and buyers out there, but they are out numbered greatly.

I did alot of pin trading when I was down there in Sept. I usually keep my lanyard in my backpack. It gets heavy after hours of wearing it. They fall off also so I don't wanna loose any. I traded about 100 and got some really great pins.

For the kids, it would be best to buy some lame-o (but still official disney) pins for them off of ebay. Then when they get to WDW, they can trade with the Cast Members who will trade any disney pin they have for any other disney pin. No pressure on the kids to make sure it is a "good" trade and they can have fun hunting for pins they like and get to interact with CMs too.

I still collect them - I only trade with CM though. My husband also collects but does want to trade.....We usually collect pins instead of buying the more expensive things at Disney, that way we still have something to look at when we get home. :)

We still collect. DD does all of the trading, but she tends to take her lanyard off and put it in her backpack until she wants to trade. She lost a pin on a ride once and has done the backpack thing since then. She also says that lanyard rubs her neck if she wears it too long.....

So I guess I'm saying thet we collect, but unless she's trading or buying a pin, you won't see her in her lanyard.

I love to trade them i think it is very fun. I only have two lanyards full but always buy about ten of them each time I go!

I still collect them but not the extend that I used to. Just very special ones that mean something to me right now

We do buy the pins and the kids trade, but after losing bunches off lanyards and then having to carry everyone's by the end of the day, I am glad to say that we have definitely reduced the number that we bring into the park on any one day by just attaching one or two to b-ball caps they are already wearing. Kids trade w/a CM once a day and I'm not schlepping an extra 30 pounds of metal....LOL

I collect them, but I don't trade.
