does anyone own a soda stream?

I love ours. We got it a few months back and use it daily. I add fruit juice concentrate to the carbonated water to flavour. DH drinks several of the Soda Stream flavours.

I have fought off the urge to get one of these for a long time. I drink a lot of seltzer or sparkling water... that stuff is not cheap. Making it at home would be really cool. I don't know how long it would take me to recoup my initial investment as opposed to buying bottles/cans of sparkling water and seltzer.

I know I wouldn't even be trying the sodas. I am WAY too picky with those. I only drink Coca-Cola, 7up, Mt. Dew, or Sierra Mist. I don't like equivalent "cola" stuff like Pepsi. Any "store brand" soda just gags me.

One of my biggest concerns with Soda Stream is...(please step in and tell me I am wrong if I am) the fact that the bottles are not dishwasher safe. I know myself well enough that what's gonna happen is, I am going to be too lazy to wash the bottle every time I want a new batch of seltzer.

I also have that urge to get one too...

So after reading all the post... i concluded that...

- Great for making sparking water
- Soda Flavoring sucks

since i dont like sparking water, i guess im convinced not to get it, lol.

We have one and like it a lot. DH works for Bed Bath & Beyond and wanted it from the time they first came out. I resisted for a long time (DD and I don't really drink soda at home and DH only has it with lunch at work), but he really wanted one, so eventually we went ahead and got it.

It is really easy to use and the flavors are pretty good. I like the ginger ale, cherry cola, and pink grapefruit. DD and DH like the energy drink (like Red Bull I'm told), lemon-lime, and Mtn Dew taste-alike.

I like it for sparkling water with lemon or orange juice also.

I'm really interested in this, but how much is it for the Co2 refills? All I'm reading is it is expensive, but can't find a real price. I'm just trying to factor in everything before I buy it.

$15 at Bed Bath and Beyond for the exchange cannister and you can use the 20% off coupon.

Thanks :thumbsup2 So about $12 a canister which should make about 60 liters, plus $4.99 for the regular cola which makes 12 liters. Sooo, I'm looking at about $37.00 for 60 liters. If I buy Coke at 1.50 per 2 liter then that would be about $45.00 for 30 - 2 liters. So a savings of $8.00.

BUT, I really, really hate the taste of diet soda & from what I have read the regular soda is made with Splenda & tastes like diet. Soo, I would then have to buy the natural soda & that runs $9.99 for only 6 liters. Which would be over $3.00 per 2 liter.:scared1:

I would have to sample the regular to see if it really tastes like diet, otherwise I'm not seeing this benefiting us. And I really think it's cool & wish it would work so if I'm missing something here or if there is another brand (soda mix) I can use or something let me know please.

You can use any soda syrup or any other flavoring you want. Its just a syrup that is added to the seltzer you make so the brand doesn't matter

Do you recommend a certain brand or anything. I just googled soda syrup & one I came up with was Pittsburgh Soda Pop, but it's running about the same price. I have to admit though, I love all of the different flavors you can get.

This would benefit me since I stopped drinking coke (except for a quarter glass amount) in the morning, but my DH usually takes 2 cans of coke a day to work. He would be good with 1 liter a day. I would just like to make different types. The butterbeer one would be cool since we are going to Universal next summer & my DD is a Harry Potter freak.

I stopped drinking soda on a regular basis. I bought a good cola syrup from williams sonoma last year (there's an outlet close by). I think a previous post mentions a syrup brand.

I saw these in Walmart (have seen the infomercials b4) and brought it up to my DBF because he drinks a lot of canned sodas, I buy them when they are on sale 3 12 packs for $9 or so, and I buy at least 3 12 packs a week! So I end up spending about $40 a month on sodas :scared1: Anyway, I asked him what he thought about getting 1 and trying it, he said he is willing, but then if he hates it then we've just blown like $150 on it...so I would love to hear 1st hand experiences :goodvibes

I switched to 2 litre bottles instead of cans. We could never completely get off cans just because everyone in the house insists on having something different all the time. That, & we don't drink much soda at home during the week. But, my can a day habit at work is half price now that I'm using large bottles instead.

I bought one for the family for Christmas a few years back. We never really cared for it and I ended up pitching it. The soda flavors were mostly terrible and there weren't alternatives that I could easily find at the time. They have since become more popular and I believe they improved the model but it just wasn't for us.

We have had our Soda Stream for quite a while. We love it. We have tried most of the flavors with Splenda added as a sweetener. They are very good.
We also like the sparkling natural flavors with real sugar. The root beer and the lemon lime are quite good.
The diet sodas are also good. :thumbsup2

If you're only going to make seltzer they don't really need to be washed after every bottle. I mean, it's just water. (Presumably you aren't drinking out of the bottle.) Also, it's recommended that you use chilled water, so you have to refill the bottle as soon as it's empty and stick it back in the fridge before you fizz it.

I saw them at Walmart today for $79...STILL had to resist the urge to buy one. I saw you can get extra bottles for like $20. I think the CO2 was like $30.

They had a whole display of that stuff....but the $79 is like buying one at Bed Bath and Beyond, with a coupon, but would be cheaper if somebody waited til Kohls had 30%.

Bought one for DS last Christmas. I must have bought the high end one because Bed Bath & Beyond doesn't stock this model so it came from the manufacturer even thought I paid for it at BBB. He really likes it and he isn't much of a soda drinker but his girlfriend is. I think the flavors are trial & error to find the ones that you like. It comes with plastic bottles but they bought glass bottles from Amazon.

I bought one for DH a couple of Christmases ago and it was a total bust. He loves Coke so I thought it would be perfect. Unfortunately, all the syrups have sorbital in them so everything tastes like diet even if it isn't. We don't drink seltzer so I can't speak to how it is plain. It was pretty easy to use but all in all a waste of money.

So I was in WalMart yesterday (don't judge me) and I passed by the SodaStream display. I remembered this thread so I picked up a non-diet cola refill and checked out the ingredients. The sweetener was cane sugar. Sorbital was NOT listed as an ingredient.

He drinks 5 cans a day? :scared:

LOL, maybe I should have been a little more clear...I will stock up when they are on sale, not necessarily when we are out. Also, my 2 older girls are allowed 1 can of soda a day, and I may drink 1 every now and then. BUT...it wouldn't be impossible for him to drink 5 cans a day!!! It's not something that he does on a daily basis tho, he probably drinks on average, 3 cans a day.
