Does anyone know how to make grave blankets?

My father passed away this year and I would like to make a grave blanket for his grave this holiday season. Just curious if anyone knows how to put these together? Thanks!!

I do not want to put a damper on what you want to do, but did you check with the office of the cemetary to see if they have certain restrictions on what you can put on a grave? A lot of cemetaries have certain guidelines.

They are made out of pine needles. Florists usually sell them starting at $40 or so and go up. I just wanted to try and do it myself and add some personal touches to it.

Call your local Flower shop and see if they can help you. We sold them during the Christmas holiday, but haven't for the past 2 years because they can be expensive. I usually just put a fresh wreath on my fathers grave the first of December. We sell a lot of the wreaths for that purpose. I think it depends on what part of the country you are from on the popularity of what goes on the grave.

You can buy undecorated grave blankets and decorate them yourself. You can make them from scratch, but there is a bit of work involved.

You will need a piece of rectangular styrofoam to start. If you want a small blanket you can leave it at that. If you want a full size blanket you will have to frame the foam with wood to support longer branches. Start pushing evergreen branches(choose an evergreen with sturdy branches) in at the corners and sides of the foam to set the shape. Continue until the blanket is filled in. After you have your base, you can fill it in with Fancy greens as accents.

To decorate it start with a bow in the center and fill in around it. I prefer natural decorations such as holly, pinecones, and dried status. To attach the decorations run a wire around them and wind the other end around a small pointed stick. This can easily be pushed into the foam. Many craft store have decorations already on picks that you can use.

The cemetery where my in-laws are buried doesn't allow grave blankets, but I get a box that has evergreen and holly berries and pointsettia and such, which is nice too. It's about the size of a flower box and sits at the base of the stone.
