We have been thinking about sending our DD-9 to a local Friends school. We have visited several times and sense a wonderful spirit about it. Our only concern is the cost, but we are determined to make a way somehow. Can anyone tell me their experiences with the Friends Schools? Thanks.

We're considering this for our 3 children so I'm giving this a bump. The school we are interested is really cost prohibitive though, and doesn't offer a discount. We might be able to afford school for one child, but three would be out of the question unless I went back to work which we are considering.

I'd like to hear more from people who have a child in a Friends school.

I don't have any children, but have friends with children in one of the area friends schools and grew up with several girls that went to a local girls only friends school.

If I had the money (and children) I absolutely would not hesitate to put my child in any of the local friends schools. The schools are top notch academically (over 10% go on the Ivy league schools and I believe they have at least a 99% higher education rate). and the school community itself is wonderful. Don't get me wrong, the public and the private schools around here are all (for the most part) excellent, but there's just something about the Quaker teaching system that allows students to thrive.

I had my child in a Friend's preschool -- the only reason we left was that he we moving to Kindergarten. I also attended a Friends school for middle school.

Both of my experiences were very positive. The school my son attended was fantastic -- he learned so much about social problem solving, creativity etc . . . I wish they went through high school!

The school I attended was less "Quaker" than the one my son attended, and it was very academically focused -- it wasn't a school for every child, but it was a great match for me!

My son attends a charter school that reminds me a lot of a good friends school -- strong social curriculum, lots of community service, emphasis on celebrating all kinds of diversity (family composition, socio-ecomonomic, racial, cultural, ability, talent). If this school wasn't available I'd have him in a Friend's schoo.

You described my view of the Friends schools exactly.

If your school is like my son's preschool or current school I definitely say go for it! It's been amazing to watch my child blossom in that environment -- as his self esteem and interest in learning have gone up, so has his academic performance!
