Does anyone have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Anyone have one or know how they are as pets? My first choice is a Yorkie but since I can't find any under $850 I am looking in other directions. But, I know that the spaniels are probably at least that much. I'm not too sure if I can even get a doggie since Mickey is such an "only child". But, he is so independent and doesn't really care that I am home (when I am) that I think it would be a little nice to have a pet that actually cares and takes a little more attention. Anyone have any other suggestions, I am trying to stay in the small dog area. Thanks

That said, I have a wonderful carefully bred toy poodle. She is extrememly quiet. She rarely barks (only when my other two big dogs bark first), you can do anything to her (my daughter once spent over 3 hours dressing her in doll clothes and then giving her a vet exam!), is the ultimate "clown" and loves to make us laugh. Poodles are VERY easy to train.

My other dogs are a gorgeous german shepherd, and a lovebunny border collie/setter mix.

If Yorkies are too expensive for you, you may not want to look for a King Charles Cavalier. In our area Yorkies are $400 - $500 and KC Cavaliers are $800 - $1000! They are beautiful animals, though. Yorkies are great. I grew up with one and have a little frisky one now. Her name is Cleo

We love all non-shedding breeds like Yorkies. Have you looked into a Bichon Frise??

We've contemplated getting a King Charles Cavalier and you do have to be VERY careful with breeders of this breed. This breed has recently become some what popular and there are some unscrupulous breeders with this breed. The breeder I was planning on working with was wonderful, but unforunately wouldn't sell me one ($1500 by the way) since I had children under the age of 5. She said since the puppies, even at 12 weeks, are so small, that she won't sell to anyone with small children. Cavaliers are VERY expensive, even though they are gaining in popularity, they are no where near as popular as Yorkies, and thus there are less breeders and less puppies. If you really want one, expect to pay a minimum of $1000 from a reputable breeder.

My cousin has 4 of them and she paid well over $1000 for each of them. I think she's nuts!!

My SIL's sister breeds these and does very well with them. She averages about $1500/dog so if you're not willing to pay $850 for a yorkie I doubt you want a King Charles. They are very nice dogs though. She does rescue also, but even those dogs go for around $800-$1000 depending on age, any special needs, etc.

If Mickey is independent, he may not care for another dog being around. It may make him cranky and they might not get along, especially if you bring home a puppy that just wants to play all the time.

My friends went really far, to Michigan, I think, for their CKC Spaniel. It was very expensive. I wouldn't think you'd find one for less than the $850 the other puppy costs.

I don't have a CKC but my SIL does. She paid a lot for this dog, so much so that she promised her DH that she wouldn't tell anyone how much! I think that her dog is calming down but she had a lot of problems. He was not potty trained for almost a year. I know that she could not leave the dog roam in the house unless she was watching him. Hard to do when you have 3 kids. He is very demanding. My MIL used to have a yorkie, also a very demanding dog and her dog was nothing like this CKC.

My SIL had such a hard time with her dog that she sent him to "doggie boot camp". He worked with a trainer for 3 weeks. I can only imagine how much she paid for that! The trainer told her that he was one of the hardest dogs that he has ever had to train.

I wanted to say this because I don't think that she researched breeder's very well. She was more concerned with his coloring. She bought him in FL without meeting the breeder and had him shipped up here.

I think that these are dogs for people who have a lot of time to spend with the dog and to train them. JMO

Thanks you guys. One of the reasons that I wanted a Yorkie (besides the fact that I have always wanted one ) is the small factor especially with Mickey. My thinking was that if I got a dog that was smaller than the cat, maybe the cat wouldn't feel so intimidated having another pet around. Who knows! Maybe I am just but it would be kinda nice. HaHa Ha HaHa Ha....I'm sorry. I'm laughing so hard! When I was growing up we had a Yorkie named Abby. Abby and our Kitty were left alone for a very short time after we had just brought Abby home. We're not exactly sure what happened but when we came home there was blood and fur and poop and poor Abby in a corner with the cat on watch to attack her again. Abby never forgave that cat. For the rest of their lives, the cat's feet could never touch the ground. Abby would chase and bark at her. It was so bad that we resorted to putting Abby in the corner for "time out" every time she chased the cat. Eventually Abby would chase the cat and put herself in timeout
I miss Abby so much !

By the way, I don't think Abby wanted to hurt the cat, just make her life a little harder

Tinks! Too funny...ok, so maybe I am a little too Mickey has the run of the whole house (I live upstairs from my aunt in a 2-family) and when I am home he is allowed to roam free throughout the house but the dog wouldn't be. As of right now, it's just the thinking stage. I most likely will be waiting till I get a house and then I will be better able to separate the two.
