Does anyone else hate April Fool's Day?

I skate up to the word 'hate', but I know exactly how you feel 6 Time Momma. There are many words I have for the 'pranks' played: childish; petty; ridiculous;sometimes just plain cruel.

It seems as though this is the one day of the year when people can lie to others and expect to be forgiven for it. I'll be glad when it's over.

I do agree some people take it one step furthur and can be downright nasty, especially if it frightens someone.

I love it if our newsreaders trick us - why not, it lightens up the news for one day!

I hardly ever participate and thought I would trick my DH today - he thought it was great fun when he found out the truth!

April fools day jokes are an art form. The trick is to come up with something that will be funny to the person being tricked as well as everyone else. I do not consider telling someone that a family member has died to be funny.

I'm sorry, but that is a HORRIBLE thing to do and I see nothing funny about it. It's nice that you've forgiven him.

I don't think that "hate" is too strong a word - especially when you hear stories like this one.

I'd venture to say that the vast majority of people who like April Fools Day would consider that to be cruel and completely not funny. April Fools Day isn't the problem for people like the person mentioned above -- they're just someone who has a really twisted sense of what's funny.

Sorry, but the BIL'S "trick" of pretending your husband was in the hospital is sick beyond words. I don't think I'd ever forgive that.

I hate practical jokes that humilite or upset people. But on April Fool's Day, I make a silly dinner for my family. For example, I make "cupcakes" out of meatloaf, with colored mashed potato "frosting." I've made "grilled cheese" that's actually grilled poundcake filled with orange-colored frosting.

Tonight we having "pink lemonade" which is actually pink jello in cups with straws. We're also having "sushi" that's Rice Krispies treats rolled up around gummi worms, wrapped in Fruit Roll Ups and sliced.

This stuff makes the holiday fun for my kids (and me too ).

I like April Fools day to a point. Today, I put a fake parking ticket on my neighbors truck, made it look obviously fake, just to get a laugh out of him. I woke my boys up at their normal time, told thin they were running late and when they got all dressed and were getting b'fast, I told them it was a joke. They loved it.
I had to crack down on Benji though. He was planning on going to school and telling his teacher his brain tumor was back!! I said no way!!! Not funny.
Last year Benji was diagnosed a week before April fools so it was weird. When we had appts for April Fools week, we actually had a few people come up to us and ask us, hopefully if it was a joke. This is a holiday that my kids and I enjoy. But I must say, I'm glad it's only once a year!!!

Anywho, I don't think there is anything wrong with being childish once in awhile, keeps us young. As far as mean, not all April 1st pranks are mean. If you can do something and you all get a laugh out of it, who cares? Life is so stinking stressful these days, it is nice to have a day where you can just have fun and be silly with each other.

I agree. I think it's kind of fun. My kids really look forward to it.

We do sit down with them beforehand and talk about what costitutes a mean and hurtful joke (got a few examples from this thread we can use now)
Also they know they are to limit the jokes - it's not a complete free-for-all all day long. Been there with the "spider on your back" type thing over and over all day!

I like the silly dinner idea. Sounds like fun!

Amen, Rose. Wearing fake eyes that peek out of the back of your head through your hair is one thing, as is the dinner idea posted above. I do have a sense of humor and silly things tickle my funnybone just like everyone else. I enjoy these silly little things the other 364 days of the year as well.

But when you have to lie to make a 'joke', then that damages your credibility as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldnt say I hate it, I do have fun with my kids having fun with me, LOL. But, things like all the fake threads on the boards today...which are so obviously fake that I dont even open them, are quite annoying.

I never heard of that. I just went to my sink to rig it for my DH but the joke is on me! We do not have one! We have an extendable spout with a switch for the spray. So much for me getting a good laugh at my DH expense!
