Does anyone buy VCR's anymore?

I ask because my mother's VCR finally gave out on her and she would like a new one (I asked her what she wanted for her upcoming birthday). I can't even imagine going out and paying for a new VCR when for basically the same money you can get a DVD player! Of course, then I would have to replace all of her favourite movies on DVD but that's what birthdays and Christmas are for, right? LOL.

I think she would really like a DVD player, although she just is afraid of anything "new". I think she would like all of the extra features you can get on the disks (behind the scenes stuff, interviews) and also how easy they are to use (no standing there to rewind etc.)

I guess I just consider VCR's obsolete or am I wrong? Do people still buy them?

I will probably run out today and buy one or the other, just looking for opinions. Thanks!

We never use ours anymore.. but we do have one that the girls can use on their own. We're replacing all of our Disney Movies to DVD when they come out!

I think you would buy a VCR only to play previously purchased tapes as well as to record from TV (assuming one does not want the still somewhat higher cost of a DVD recorder)

How about a DVD/VCR? That's what I plan to buy when my VCR dies. Then I can slowly replace my videos with DVDs.

We bought a new VCR less than a year ago. We use it to tape tv shows that we don't want to miss. We have two DVD players, but not getting a DVD recorder any time soon...we barely use the VCR so a DVD recorder wouldn't be worth it. And I must admit, we did feel weird buying a VCR!

we have our old vcr and a recently purchased dvd/vcr combo (for the bedroom). (we also have a dvd player in the living room along with the old vcr).

we are slowly trying to replace our vhs's wth dvd's, but unfortunately, not everything we own is out on dvd yet. my all time favorite miniseries (i have the 12 vhs collection) is probably never going to come out on dvd.

we hardly use our vcr's anymore though since we also have tivo.

We just bought our first DVD player a few months ago after living in the Dark Ages for so long!! We went with the VCR/DVD combo because we have so many videos. When we replace our bedroom one we'll do the same. I'm bad. I'll probably not replace all the Disney movies with DVD's...just get the new ones the girls want.

Hey, thanks for the input. I think the DVD/VCR combo is the way to go then! I forgot they even made those, so thanks a lot!!! :D

We only use the VCR for DD's movies that are tapes. We are also (slowly) replacing our favorite movies with DVD. :)

This is what we have. No way was I going to replace all the tapes we have for the kids. Anything new we buy on DVD.

What kind of cables do the DVD/VCR combos use? I just had a heck of a time hooking a DVD player up to my old-ish TV, which only has the coax input and none of the "fancy" stuff.

We still have a BETA. We haven't moved up to the VCR yet.

I have a VCR, and if it breaks I will get a new one, I also have a DVD player

My kids just got VCR's so they could tape and watch shows and watch our older VHS movies. I will be buying them DVD players for Christmas.

I use my VCR pretty much everyday to tape/watch tv shows but rarely use it to watch movies anymore.

Which mini-series? My mom and brother are big Centennial fans, and I was just wondering if that was what you are talking about.

We have a DVD player, but I still use my VCR all the time. We're gone a lot in the evenings, so most of the stuff I watch I tape off TV or my mom has taped for me (she has Direct TV; we have rabbit ears :teeth: ). And I don't want to waste the money to replace all my old video tapes - some maybe, but not all.

:o :o :o yep, it is!

my mom and sister and i watch it together every year at thanksgiving.

Cool, caitycaity :). I'll have to let my mom (a lurker) know that there's a big Centennial fan on the DIS. She and my brother have watched it countless times. I've watched the entire thing a couple of times, but it's been several years. Maybe I need to borrow her set of VHS tapes.
