Do your kids wear sunglasses?

Hi!

DS 4 and DS 2 have been complaining about the sun being too bright when we go outside. They want sunglasses (much to my DH's delight; as a pilot he is a very big eye safety person!), but I'm not sure what kind to get for them. I dread having to keep track of sunglasses when we go out, and I know that the sunglasses may be doomed to be lost or squashed pretty soon, so I don't want to spend a lot of money. But, for proper fit and comfort and protection, do you NEED to spend a lot on sunglasses for such little kids?

Any input is much appreciated!

DS does not like the bright bright sun either, but we have a problem with sunglasses for him. His eyelashes are so darned long, that kids sunglasses 'bug' him, because his lashes hit the lenses. He will usually wear a ballcap or visor, and saves the shades for really bright times. He is just now big enough to start wearing small adult glasses.

Good Luck

My DD does wear sunglasses when she's outside with us. At daycare I send a hat in for her to wear. They would definitely get lost at daycare but with us we haven't had a problem losing them. You can get a pair of kids sunglasses that block both UVA & UVA rays for under $10. I got one pair at Right Start for about $8 and another at the Lego store for about $7. I'm still a think a hat is a good idea along with the glasses because it keeps the sun off their head and face.

Sunglasses are actually recommended for kids whenever they're outside to protect their eyes from the UV rays. Mine don't wear them often enough, but they sure like to buy them:rolleyes:

I get them at WalMart - they have kid's sunglasses that are all plastic for around $4. Make sure they say 100% UV protection. They have tons of Disney styles, byw :)

It's also recommended that kids wear sunblock whenever they play outside, although I'm bad to not put it on them if they're just going out in the yard to play for a little while. I will try to do better this spring and summer...

yes 3-4 pair per kid per spring/summer season sounds about right
I keep a set in the car for everyone then we have them when we need them
usually break or lose a couple pair so we don't spend a lot for them

it depends on what they're doing outside. If their riding their bike, no because they irritate them with the helmet on, and given the choice of them wearing glasses or helmets- I go with helmets. Outside running around, yes, or they have a baseball cap or visor on.

They keep a visor at school, and wear it when they go out at recess. In the car, beach, walking outside yes.

They started with glasses at about age 3, when the would wear them ALL THE TIME...almost to bed too!....now it's just a habbit. They have 4-5 pair, I keep a pair in each vehicle and they usually ahve 1-2 pair in their room that they grab when we go out. $4.97 at wal-mart, tons of disney ones. I just got them new ones for our Disney trip.

Thanks, everyone, for the helpful responses. I always know I'll get some good input when I ask a question here on the DIS!

Keeping a pair in the car is a really good idea. I'm going to go to Wal-Mart tomorrow and buy each kid 2 or 3 pairs!

Thanks again. :)

Wal-Mart had a new display this week of Disney sunglasses in both boy (Buzz, Mickey, Tigger, Pooh) and girl (several princesses, Minnie, etc.) designs. At $4.84 you can't go wrong! They each got 2 pair....one to wear and one to keep for later when the first ones get broken. Actually, DD will rotate hers as she's careful with her stuff. DS bends the legs off....so he may have gone through his by next week  Guess I should get a couple more pair for him for our next trip.....

Our kids are not allowed to have hats or sunglasses at school. That irritates me because they say you should wear sunglasses whenever you are outside and DD still has to go outside after lunch. I've contemplated fussing to the school board about this one, but I've never done it.

I usually buy a couple of pairs each summer for my kids. They do tend to get lost. But my kids are teens so that may not be a fair comparison.

We buy at leat 3 pair per kid each. My DDs have left them in WDW park restrooms, dropped them in the lakes and left them on rides. We even bought the straps for them so they could hang round their necks. They still lost them:rolleyes: They have to have the Disney sunglasses too and they are not cheap! the amount I have bought for them, cost more than the Ray Bans that I have for myself!:earseek:

Both of my boys have very light blue eyes (like me and DH!) and have always worn sunglasses. We also go through several pairs each summer (kind of like gloves in the winter, we stock up on those too!)

When we were in WDW this past January I cleaned up in Walmart - they had so many kid styles to choose from, at a reasonable price, that I think I bought each kid 5 pair. :)

DS wears glasses for distance. When we went to the optometrist in November he got "Transitions" lenses. They change from light to dark and then back again. He loves them! It eliminates the need for 2 pair of glasses. Years ago I worked for an optometrist and these sort of lenses were only available in glass lenses. They were called "photograys" at the time. It's nice they now have plastic lenses that change too.

DS is 14 months, and I always try to keep sunglasses on him. Of course, he eventually pulls them off to chew on them, but he's getting used to wearing them.

It's extremely important that they say they block 100% of the rays and not just 99%. Having sunglasses on makes your pupils dialate more, so the sun can cause even more damage than not wearing sunglasses at all would if some of the harmful rays can get through.
