Do your at home rules apply to DVC?

Every now and then, people post about certain DVC rooms looking run down and in poor conditions. Seeing that we are all owners, we all have a vested interest in room conditions.

My question is: When in a DVC resort, do you follow the rules you follow at home. For example, do you never eat in bed at home but do so while on a DVC vacation? Do you clean up as you do at home? etc.

Just curious.

Agree - we try to be even more careful when we are using things that don't belong to us.

Absolutely. When we checked out of our room 2 weeks ago I remember thinking the housekeeper is going to have an easy job because the unit was pretty much as we found it except for towels, sheets, etc. I even started the dishwasher for her.

I would like to think that our family treats every place we stay with the same respect (if not more out of fear of breaking something) we have for our home, whether we have an ownership interest in it or not. When we stay at a hotel, we do the same. It's not a DVC thing at all.

I think all of us might be unusual though. Too many times to mention, we have had to wait for carpets to be cleaned etc, before getting into our unit, and too many times there is serious damage that has been created by inconsiderate folks. Even when we had 12 in a GV in October, the place looked great when we left. We even bagged and emptied all the garbage containers and placed all towels in the tubs etc. Dishes were in the dishwasher and beds were stripped. It always seems the least we can do for the housekeeping staff. We will sweep and vacuum as necesary during our stay as well.

If the folks above us a couple weeks ago is any indication, some definately are NOT careful or even care what their kids are doing to the place. Witness the burn marks on tile, sinks and other surfaces at ANY hotel, and you will know that's true. This month, someone had kicked the door badly on the new dishwasher in our unit. It was all dented up. Now WHY would someone do that? I'm quite sure they wouldn't do that at home!

definitely - except the sheet thing - we take them off the bed and leave them....

my sheets go straight to the washer at home - but DVC send the sheet and towels out to be cleaned.

Last spring, there were 7 of us in a 2 bd at OKW - including a 3 yr. old. Everyone pitched in. We ran the dishwasher every day and before we left. We piled dirty towels together for T&T day and before we left. We made a quick pass with the sweeper every other day, and cleaned crumbs as we went. There's lots(!) of crumbs with a little one, so we pretty much limited her to eating at the table or the coffee table. Everyone else ate where and when they wanted. We made sure the kitchen, baths and laundry room were picked up and fairly clean as we left.

Not only does this make life easier for everyone during the vacation, it makes it less likely that anything will be left behind.

I don't look at DVC as a regular hotel room. Anything that makes the job easier/quicker for housekeeping will benefit all of us in the long run. If we all do this, rooms will be ready sooner for the next owner to enjoy!

We are careful with our DVC units, even more so than we are at home. I do the dishes before we leave, I tie the trash bags shut, pile the towels...I don't usually strip the beds. While I didn't use the stove, I noticed a burned on spot (it was one of the new flat top stoves at OKW). I scrubbed and scrubbed and it wouldn't come off. Finally, I tried toothpaste (which I figured was a mild abrasive) and it worked beautifully. I really have to wonder what the Mousekeepers think of the conditons in which some folks leave the units?

As far as Disneydiane's dented dishwasher....I wouldn't be too sure that they don't act that way at home...been out to a restaurant lately? You have to wonder about some people. Unfortunately, some folks do live like that....how many adult meltdowns have you seen in the parks?

Well, I'll have to be the different one. While our house rules are the same, I am not fanatical. We do clean while we are there, but when it comes to check out, the sheets stay on the beds, the towels stay in the bathroom, and the trash definitely stays in the trach can. I would not be so quick to assume that because there was dent or a burn mark, it was purposeful, accidents can happen, especially with children. I believe there are people who take little care, but they are probably in the minority. Any small living space occupied on an almost daily basis is sure to have some signs of neglect. Flame me if you must!

We are 2 adults, no kids, so we don't really have "rules" at home or on vaccation. But we generally try to take care of the places we stay-- trash in the trash can, towels in a pile, etc. I will admit to eating chocolate cake or cookies in bed on vaccation though, and I don't usually do this at home.

Yes, we follow the same house rules when we are on vacation. I would be embarrassed to leave a mess behind when we checked out. Besides, just because a hotel/resort has housekeeping doesn't give someone the right to be out and out slobs.

We also clean up after ourselves - we do it every day on vacation regardless of whether or not it is a mousekeeping day. I hate coming back to a messy place so we tidy up before we head out and start the dishwasher or clothes washer/dryer if needed just like at home.

One exception, like TarraLee - we also eat in bed on vacation. This is truly a vacation-only activity for us since our 70 lb. lab sleeps with us at home...we wouldn't stand a chance of eating anything in bed without her snatching it!

Believe me, this was no little dent in the dishwasher. It looked like someone had kicked it repeatedly or taken a large blunt force instrument to it.

Pretty much the same as at home. Clean up after ourselves, the children know there is no running in the room or the hallways for that matter. We use nice inside voices so we don't disturb the neighbors. It's the same no matter where we stay.

No we do not follow the same rules at DVC as we do at home. At home we let our great dane sleep in bed with us. We don't let him do that at dvc resorts.

We are probably a little more strict at DVC. But I definitely don't strip the beds, clean up the towels and empty the garbage. We pay a huge annual fee for cleaning (in our dues) and only get a midweek cleaning if we stay 8 nights -- so there's no way I'm doing housekeeping's job in addition to packing my car on the last (depressing) day.

However, I will start the dishwasher for them.

I teach my kids to treat other people's things even better than your own, same goes for DVC.
