some girl is protesting here right to wear it

Are you talking about apparel with a print of the Confederate flag on it..... I don't.

nope! I understand what it ONCE stood for and can appreciate certain folks seeing it as part of their history.

But that isn't what it stands for anymore. Now I kinda find it offensive.

No, I wouldn't be caught dead in or with it.

I don't but if I found a shirt or something with it on there that I liked I would. I think you should be able to if you want.

WTH? She seriously cannot have any concept of what that flag was. Unless perhaps she has the matching white pointy hat. :sad2:

My thoughts exactly.I associate that flag with people actually wanting to continue slavery.I personally am offended when I see one in a truck,on a house, definitely on a public building. I cant even imagine why anyone would want to wear something so offensive my first thought was she probably has a full bed linen set with hood and a nazi flag too. Then I read your post and laughed because I wasnt the only one thinking along those lines.

Actually you could be quite wrong on that point. Depending on her family and her heritage she could well know much more than you or most other adults about what that flag was and what it meant. Especially if she belongs to the daughters of the confederacy or some other similar organization.

Having said that, I will admit that I don't believe I'd ever wear a confederate flag
anywhere on my clothes, display it in my home, or anything else like that and I cringe when I see others do it. I know that flag offends many people that I love and respect very much. Maybe this young lady feels they are wrong to associate the confederate flag solely with slavery but it's a common pattern of thought and it's not worth hurting people to argue a point IMHO.

well not a fan but it is a 1st Amend right

Ok and the flag does not always stand for hatred and bigotry

You are absolutely right.

Thats what I was going to say!

Signed,

The Jewish kid who grew up loving and wearing all things Dukes of Hazzard.

See my screenname OF COURSE I WOULD! LOUD And PROUD. I don't associate the Confederate Flag with hate or bigotry. I consider it a big part of my history. I have a great great grandfather and some uncles that fought in the war. They fought for something they believed in. It wasn't slavery BTW we were tenant farmers and didn't have any money. They believed in States Rights as well as in the Constitution. I am proud that they stood up for what they believed in. I am and will always be Confederate Proud.

Signed,

REDDIXIEBELLE

This story was on the front page of our newspaper today. The girl wants to wear her shirt to school, but the administration says no, due to a rule about disruptive attire. They've handled cases like this before, and have always won. The Confederate flag is undeniably polarizing and divisive here, and the school feels it is in the best interest of everyone to not allow Confederate attire.

I read comments by her and her relatives, and although who knows how the media twists things around or misrepresents, it didn't seem as though they were concerned about 'heritage' issues or 1st Amendment rights. I could be completely off base, but it sounded more like a "you can't tell me what to do" issue--their arguments weren't particularly convincing or impressive.

I can't imagine I would, but I don't have anything against other people wearing it. I did have a Dukes of Hazzard Big Wheel as a child with the confederate flag on it.

Nope. I mostly just stick with clothes that have :mickeyjum

I think that it is inappropriate attire and she should not be allowed to wear it. My kids cannot wear inappropriate shirts that people may find offensive. This is pretty broad and some kids have had to turn top inside out for wearing Marilyn Manson,Anti Bush,FCUK,marijauna leaves etc and I feel a Union Jack would be equally offensive.
I understand that the flag was originally meant to be the Navy emblem for the south and is seen as a symbol of southern pride by many. My DH included(he's a southern boy).
My problem is that what it is used for now more often than not is a symbol of hate.It has been adopted by racists, white supremacists, neo nazis, skin heads,Ku klux klan and other hate organizations. That is why I hold this symbol in contempt and feel it should not be displayed. I am not saying it cannot be because it is not illegal. I am just saying that because it is so hurtful to people I think they should be kind enough to refrain from wearing it.

I don't see how this flag is any different than any other flag of somewhere which supported political practices or ideas that might not be considered ‘acceptable’ today. In other words, because at one time most Americans believe women shouldn’t have the right to vote, the US didn’t allow them to vote, and the US flag was the flag of this nation, that if you wear the flag, you are automatically ‘anti-women voting’? The same goes for any other flag of a nation which at one time promoted slavery, or sending certain groups to concentration camps/internment camps, etc. (which would pretty much rule out any country on this earth). Times change. The supporters under the flag may have supported slavery 150 years ago, but who knows what their political ideologies might have been now. I don’t believe the flag stands for slavery or other such associated causes, but rather that was simply one of their political beliefs at the time. I don’t see a problem with wearing it.
