I'm curious how many of you use something for motion sickness....I find the older I get the less tolerance I have for certain motions. I can ride something like BTMRR or Splash just fine. Haven't ridden Space Mt. in 20 yrs. and wonder how I'll do next time (dark aspect, "can't anticipate the next turn" thing!)... :confused3 Anything that has a spin to it or goes upside down really does it for me!

So! I would love to know of your experience with Dramamine or something like that. Does it knock you out? I would hate to be drowsy!! :faint:

I have used Dramamine (sp?) the past two times we have gone to WDW. It didn't make me drowsy maybe because of the excitement of being at WDW. I found it has helped me on most of the rides (BTMR, RNR, Tower or Terror, Star Tours). It hasn't really helped with Mission Space that much. I come off of that ride still feeling a little queasy.

Why take drugs you may not need? We travel and cruise a lot and we swear by Relief Bands (http://www.reliefband.com/main.html) . My wife and daughter used to get motion sick all the time, especially on simulator type rides (and cruises) until we found these.

Note that these AREN'T those little elastic bands (called sea bands) with balls that you get at Walmart (we didn't have much success with those). Relief Bands are electronic "wristwatch-looking" things that are the ONLY FDA approved device for motion sickess and nausea.

The advantages over drugs are:

1. No side effects
2. Only use it if you need it
3. You can use it AFTER you get symptoms
4. It works incredibly fast (within a few minutes)
5. You can dial up just as much relief as you need.

These things are fantastic and well worth the price.

I've just started uses Less Drowsie Dramamine (Bonine) on my last trip. While I can ride almost every ride at Disney without trouble, Mission Space gave me problems the first time I rode. I also went to Universal and was able to ride Hulk and Dueling Dragon several times without trouble. I took a break between each ride to play it safe but ended up riding Hulk 4 times and each of side of Dueling Dragon 5 times. Considering I normally have trouble to Raptor here at Cedar Point The Dramamine made a world of difference.

I have veritgo and I have used the travel patch. I get it from my doctor. It comes four to a box. I put one behind my ear on the bone that curves behind my ear and for three days I wear it. After three days if I still am at the parks then I simply put another patch on behind the opposite ear. The drawbacks to it is that the patch messes with my vision so that when we go to a resturant my dh has to read the menu. The patch also tends to make me have a dry mouth so I simply drink water more. When I do get dizzy without the patch.. watch out. I will stay dizzy for a long time and may get sick. But with the patch if I get dizzy I tend to get over it within a few minutes. I love btmrr and splash mountain and this helps me alot.

less drowsey even makes me a zombie! the patch for behind your ear is called scolpamine . it can mess with your vision (blurry until you take the patch off)

buy some powdered ginger pills from the local health food store. they work WONDERS for me!!!!! also on the plus side, no side effects at all!!!!!!!

hope this helps!

I am the queen of motion sickness, but I still love to ride. My dr and the pharm. had me start using bonine when I was about 6 and now I am 26 and will not go anywhere without it. It does not make you tired or anything like that. They are a chewable rasberry pill that you take 30 mins before activity and last for 24 hours. I am already buying them for my trip in May, I have to use them just to get on the plane! I would try bonine, it is in a blue box next to the other motion sickness stuff.

I take Bonine starting the day before I do any activity that may cause motion sickness. I take it at night, so if it makes me drowsy, I'm sleeping! I don't notice any side effects from it at all. It just makes me not get sick on rides or when I'm on a cruise! I like that effect. :)

I've tried "natural" remedies and none of them have worked for me. Bonine is wonderful and certainly keeps my vacation enjoyable for everyone! Protein spills are not disney magic! :rotfl:

I am a diver and who gets seasick on the boat trip out. Many years ago my dive master suggested Meclazine (which I think is some type of bonine) because it is not suppose to have the sleepy side effect. I have used it ever since. I also use it when I fly and it is amazing. No matter how rough a boat or plane gets I am fine! I for one am excited to give it a try on the rides. Maybe it will even make me braver!

When I fly, I am the "Dramamine Queen" - I hope that does not make me a drama queen. :teeth:

It is theonly thing that works for me. I get the non-drowsy formula and I am good to go. :)

ive used dramine for years with driving, flying & some rough rollercoasters, it works like a charm. i dont get drowsy from it.

I have problems with feeling sick or drowsy from any medicines for motion sickness, so I used to just sit out the rides that I knew would make me sick. Still, sometimes I'd be surprised and get sick on something I thought would be fine, and then I'd end up flat on my back for an hour trying to recover.

I've since discovered two things that help me: Ginger (in any form, not just pills), and the relief band mentioned in the 2nd post. Ginger is way cheaper though, so I usually recommend it first. Ginger snaps, ginger ale, ginger altoids (my favorite method), candied ginger (a close second), doesn't matter what form, and you just keep trying until you figure out what works for you. I now eat a couple ginger altoids or candied ginger pieces before something that might make me sick, and then if I still feel a little woozy afterwards I keep eating ginger until I feel better - usually doesn't take much. There have been studies done that show it really is effective, and it also works with morning sickness and other nausea.

The relief band also works, but it's expensive.

I use the Less Drowsy formula and it still makes me a little drowsy. :teeth:

A couple of years ago, I made the mistake of taking 2 of them before we left for MK. Not so much for Space Mountain, but more for DUMBO. DD loves this ride and had been talking about us riding it all year leading up to the trip. I can't spin without getting sick, so I loaded up on Dramamine, thinking I was really smart.

Big Mistake.
I seriously thought I was going to pass out in line for Buzz Lightyear (one of our first rides that morning). It was very hot and I just could NOT hold my eyes open. It took half the day to wear off, and I finally felt okay again after lunch. I learned my lesson. Never again.

SeattleMark or anyone else who might know the answer to this - do those bands also work wih the nausea, etc. you get with pregnancy? I'm not talking about the inconvienent little nausea most women get during pregnancy but those full blown out vomiting/nausea some women get. I tried EVERYTHING during my last preganancy (even had a hospital stay for dehydration) the only thing that worked was Zofran (used for folks on chemotherapy). I want to have another child but am very nervous about another repeat.

I've not been pregnant myself to test it, but one of my friends used it during her pregnancy and said it was really helpful. She would put it on as soon as she started to feel queasy, and she also took ginger pills and drank a lot of flat ginger ale. The only thing is that I don't think you are supposed to wear the band for long periods of time. Her doctor was the one who recommended this plan to her, and she said it made a huge difference. Obviously check with your doctor, but maybe this would help you.

I also found that the older I get the more motion sick I become. I couldn't ride the teacups with dd's due to it. So after reading here about meclazine I bought the Walgreen's version. I take it each night so I don't feel the sleepiness. It works wonders. Last time I went with dd's and dh, dh spun the teacup so fast it made HIM ill but I was fine.

I highly recommend it. :cool1:

Less Drowsy Dramamine still makes me drowsy, Scopalomine patch works but makes my eyes a bit weird. Many years ago I tried Bonine and it seemed to work great with no side effects, I think that's what I'll take on my upcoming trip. Although...that ginger thing sounds interesting, I've not tried it since it just seems "different" and I've never wanted to take a chance on getting motion sick. I just might try it!

Wow, have I got input for this. Scopolamine patch messes with DHs vision. Less drowsy Dramamine is same as Bonine (Meclizine) works fine for us both. Bands (on wrist) couldn't fix the intense pregnancy "morning"-not sickness I had or the sea sickness on an Aussie scuba trip so haven't tried since. I've been using ginger for years and have used it successfully on cruise and rides. DH stuck with Meclizine until he saw an episode of Myth Busters where they "proved" that ginger was the best motion sickness prevention. We were on Mission Space etc with our children two weeks ago taking only ginger capsules with breakfast. Unless we were hungry on a ride, we were fine. Note that I was in tears the year I didn't take anything before Mission Space, so I really think ginger capsules work. "Extra Ginger Brew" and crystalized ginger work better for us than ginger ale and ginger snaps and mints but taste rather strong and nothing works as well for us as the (more concentrated?) capsules. Happy riding :thumbsup2

I have a question about motion sickness I hope you all can help me with. My DS13 son is coming with us in a couple of weeks to WDW. He has car sickness and gets queasy on rides also. However, he has never flown in an airplane and I am wondering if a person who gets car sick is likely to also get air sick? If so what would be safe for him to use? I think he usually uses Dramamine in the car but I have to ask his mom. I am afraid he is going to have to take something pretty much the whole week and as he is 13 wondering what would be best? Thanks! I'm sure his mom will be talking with the doctor but just curious what works for all of you.
