Ok he's literally on the ladder outside my window & it just dawned on me - is this a service where they expect a tip? It's one man, he owns the company, and I have a written quote for the services. I never know when they expect a tip or not (I mean I'm sure they always appreciate one)!

Take myself out for an ice cream, I'll get a banana split if i did a good job!

ETA: sorry couldn't resist. :guilty:

I probably would, but I usually tip service professionals. DH is in a service position and always appreciates when he is tipped for a job well done. JMHO

I was taught that you didn't tip the business owner. So in this case I wouldn't. I would however offer him a cold drink when he's done or takes a break.

I quick texted 2 neighbors that used him previously & one did not tip, the other gave him $25. The bill is $475 so I guess I can round up to $500 if they look sparkly clean when he's done! I was just starting to panic that he'd expect a 20% tip - and on $475 that's not something I budgeted for.

I did offer any of the drinks in the garage fridge for the day.

I absolutely would not tip a contractor that I hired to do a in my home and got a quote for. Sorry, but I think it's even ridiculous to consider it!

Not if he's the owner. If he wasn't I would probably tip - $25 on $475 sounds about right.

Would definitely be offering cold drinks or something similar.

I never heard of tipping contractors. $475? How long did it take?

I never tip contractors either, I just wasn't sure if this was along those lines or more a delivery/service thing. We had carpet installed earlier this year & those guys hovered around uncomfortably when they were done, I think they were waiting for a tip that it hadn't even occurred to me to give. So now I second guess myself with things like this. He got here at noon & said it will take 5-6 hours.
