Trying a new place tomorrow. The owner is doing my hair. Do I tip? I heard you don't have to but I feel funny.

I dont know where that ever came into play - but Ive heard that as well.

However - my g/f owns a salon, and gets tips - more often then not.

I guess because the owner is getting 100% of the haircut price. A worker would only get a percentage.

Yeah - but they also front the price of everything. The product, the supplies, etc....kwim?

yep I KWYM. That's why I feel funny but my friends say don't.

I tip my stylist for this reason. She might charge what she wants for the cut but that's not her money -- it goes right back into the salon. Sure, I'm sure she gets some kind of salary ... but my guess it isn't nearly as much as people think it is.

DH used to own his own business (not one where you'd tip) but his income based on what he put into the business (his stress level, time, etc.) wasn't as high as he could've made working elsewhere.

Not necessarily. The stylist may actually rent out the chair on certain days. meanwhile the owner always pays for shop rental, insurance, liability, advertising, etc.

If it was some posh salon where the owner is a celeb who cuts Halle Berry's hair, then no, maybe I wouldn't tip since the price alone is paying for his celeb status.

But if it's a small shop owner, then yes, I would tip.

My own question is: Do you pay for the shampooer, in a fancy salon, if it is a separate person? :confused3

I go to a swanky Fifth Avenue salon, and the shampooer washes my hair & brings me coffee while I'm waiting for my stylist. I'm never sure if I'm supposed to tip her, or if the Stylist gives her a percentage out of her own tips. I usually tip my stylist 20%. In turn, she bends over backwards to fit me in for last minute appointments and free bangs trimmings in between.

That same g/f - I work in her salon on weekends, just to help out. I 'assist'.

My g/f doesnt give me any % of her tips - none of them girls do - but some people tip, and some people dont.

Ive gotten to know who tips and who doesnt. Guess who gets longer scalp massages? :rolleyes1

You do not tip the owner of anything that I can think of.

I tip the shampooer $3. Not only do I get a shampoo, but I get a 5 min. scalp massage. And, like your shampooer, mine also brings me coffee while I'm waiting for the stylist (who happens to be the owner).

Yes you always tip the shampoo girl.

the first salon I ever worked for was a private owned shop. That is where I first heard that you do not tip the owners. She used to say it all the time to her customers. That was 27 years ago! :scared1:

Now the shop I go to (I no longer work as a hairdresser, only on the side)
there is a company that owns several shops!

I do tip the shampoo girl- she probably makes the least.

I worked in a salon for years. The owner was tipped some of the time. I now have my hair done at another shop and the owner does it, I do tip. The owners expense base is great and if they accept a tip, I offer it. They can always refuse it.

My mom and dad have been going to the same salon (yes my dad- he followed the guy from a previous salon so they've been together for 30 years :rotfl: ) and always have the owners (husband and wife) cut their hair. I used to go there as a kid but mom would never pay for me to get my hair cut by the owners. I know that my parents never tip the pwners (Bob and Janet) but if someone else styles my mom's hair she tips that person (dad never allows anyone other than Bob to touch his hair- dad's real particular). They also tip the shampoo girl. Hope that helps.

Yes I do. Have always tipped for a good job.

My hairstylist (been my stylist for years) is also a friend. recently opened her own shop as sole owner (was 1/2 owner before). I think she needs money more now than before! LOL.
