Do you tip if you pick up carry-out food like Chinese or Pizza?

I actually came to post the same question...

I picked up a pizza last week and put it on credit and added a tip to it. The cashier picked it up and I heard her as I walked out the door... In her most sarcastic voice "Oh my gosh you guys, we just got a dollar tip...can you believe it?" I was so PISSED off at her, I wanted to turn around and give her a piece of my mind, but that is not me. So now, I will NEVER go back there and tell anyone who will listen to NEVER go there again. Argh!!:headache::headache:

I only tip every now and then and it is only $1 or $2 at most. But it seems like it is becoming more and more expected and I don't think that is right at all. Be grateful that you get any tips at all. (Yes, I am still a bit bitter.)

Oh that would've ticked me off!! I don't tip at take-out places and I swear it's getting ridiculous how many places have tip jars:eek: The exeption would be if I went to the same deli/store every day then I would probably give them a buck or two every once in a while and a little more at Christmas. In fact, now that I think about it, I do tip my local deli guy b/c he has my ice tea ready for me before I get to the counter and he gives my kids treats once in a while:thumbsup2

I tip at places that pay a low hourly wage (like $3)plus tips. If someone is making a regular minimum wage then I don't tip as they are already being compensated by their employer.

I don't do take out so much anymore. I never tip if I am picking up a pizza. Chinese food, I do tend to drop the change in the cup or round to the nearest dollar if using a card. Easier balancing for me and a little extra for a place that is usually family run (I don't go to the chains.) As long as the food is hot and ready as well as packaged up nicely without it leaking everywhere ... the small change is worth it.

Tipping a single $1 on a CC slip is pretty tactless and worse than just not leaving a tip.

Nope tipping has gotten totally out of hand.
I agree!

I worked as a courtesy clerk (bag girl) at a grocery store from 16-21yrs old.I made min wage. I bagged huge orders, helped customers to their cars, cleaned up messes on the floor, cleaned and collected basket/carts in the hot sun. We didn't even get free soda or water on those hot days. We were not allowed to accept tips what so ever or we would get fired. I didnt mind not getting tips nor did i expect any. I was doing my job and got paid for it. Now a days everyone expects to be tipped and i nolonger know the rules.

I hate seeing those tip jars in stores, take out, drive thurs, etc. I have no problem tipping waitor/waitresses etc. but tipping has gone way overboard

I have a simple rule. If I am eating in the restaurant then yes I tip. If i am taking it home to eat, no tip.

I don't tip at pizza; I always tipped at our local family-owned chinese place because they were soooo awesome and knew us by name. (They closed a few years ago and STILL remember our names when we run into each other 3 times a year at our kids' school).

When I get curbside takeaway at Outback or pickup at Olive Garden, I do tip because I always have at least one special order and so far I have yet to be charged for the extra alfredo sauce at Olive Garden (and they used to charge my MIL $2 for her extra sauce inside!). I know at Olive Garden there is a lady whose job it is to answer all of the takeaway orders, packages them, and she accomodates my special requests (extra sauce, extra breadsticks, extra silverware, whatever) plus she brings it out to me, and how is that any different from a waitress other than that I didn't get a drink?

At Jersey Mikes (a sub shop chain), there is an actual sliding scale that pops up to see how much you want to tip. It gets on my nerves. I order online, drive to shop, pick up my food and they want to know if I want to tip 20%? Are you kidding me? And I always feel they are lingering when I swipe that arrow right down to 0% tip.

I have also had a guy at Pizza Hut drive-thru roll his eyes when I did not tip. Out of control.

If I sit down, I tip 20%-30%. I also tip at Sonic because they bring me my food.

But at Dominos (another place with a tip line) or Jersey Mikes or Pizza Hut Pick Up Window? No. I will not tip.

^^^^^Why did you bump a thread which is FIVE years old?^^^^^^

another recent thread i saw, i guess an suggested box shows up on the bottom that shows older threads and people tend to click on that thinkin its a recent one...

as for the OP, i find it strange now that amazon has a box to tip your package delivery driver...

Similarly, we had a Viet Namese student intern one year at work, and he always said to tip the waitresses at Chinese restaurants in cash, because if it was put on your credit card they would never see it. I don't know if that's true or not, but if I have cash on me, that's what I usually do.
I tip on my credit card at our local Chinese buffet and see the cashier immediately give the server the cash.

It's not on every thread for me but on some I am seeing suggested threads also at the bottom of my screen. And yep, many are OLD!

Crazy on the amazon tip box. I haven't seen that yet.
