Do you tip if you pick up carry-out food like Chinese or Pizza?

Nope tipping has gotten totally out of hand.

No never....all I'm doing is picking up my food. :confused3

I worked at an apple restaurant for three years through college and when I bartended/waitressed I never accepted tips for a take out order. They were few and far between (10 years ago) but if someone insisted, I always gave them to the cooks. I think it's ridiculous for someone to hand you a bag to be paid for that. It's really the same as paying the person at McD's for putting things on your tray really nicely and giving you some ketchup packets. When you tip at a restaurant it's because of the service you receive (ie refills, extras, making sure you're satisfied with your meal, cleaning up after you). I just don't get it! It just seems so shady to me.:confused3

My first answer was NO. Then I remembered that I tipped the Bagel bakery cashier/girl who makes my food, because she was really quick!

I do for curbside pick up. My sis did to go's for Applebees and she made like two bucks and hour and then tips... but lots of people don't know that so she didn't make much. They take orders, get them ready to go and packaged etc.

I don't if I'm picking up pizza or something inside though. I still had to load all my kids out of the car to get it.

I don't tip for traditionally carry out places like the pizza or Chinese places. For me, they fall into the same category as regular fast food places where employees make standard wages.

I do tip a few bucks if I get take out from a sit down restaurant - it's usually the waitress (making less then minimum wage) that takes the order, checks it for accuracy, packs it up and presents it to me. That's not much different then if I were sitting at a table eating.

I tip for take-out at restaurants like Outback. Especially if they bring it out to my car in the rain.

I don't normally tip when I pick up food.....I always feel guilty though.

Since several people have mentioned Sonic, I will say that my 16 year old niece recently started working as a car hop. Don't know how long she'll last on skates but that a story for another day. Anyway, I was shocked to find out that she's only making $3.50 an hour. I'll certainly make sure to tip at Sonic from now on!!!

Sorry, no tips for Chinese or pizza. I've never done the curb takeaway types, but if I do, I would tip for that.

I don't tip if I pick up a "hot and ready" from Little Caesar's or other pizza. I usually put in a dollar or 2 at the chinese carryout (small local business). I usually leave a nice tip at Subway if the kids working are super nice and make nice sandwiches. The teenage boys who work at our local Subway are usually SUPER nice and don't skimp on the subs! Maybe I should, but I don't really expect to get OUTSTANDING customer service from a couple of teenage boys working unsupervised, so when I get it, I show my appreciation. :)

Our Chinese place is delivery/take out only. We only tip if they deliver, and they don't have a tip jar. Same with our hoagie take out place. Pizza we get Dominos, and that's if we're desparate and exhausted, so it's delivery at that point, that we tip for.

Nope. Not from a quick take out place like that. If I don't tip at McDonalds I'm not going to tip for take-out pizza. If we order take-out from a regular sit down restaurant I will leave a small tip since the servers do have to take time to put things together for those, but not for a quick service place where take-out is the norm.

if its take out straight off the menu no. If Im being picky and I ask them to custom make stuff example please dont add cream to the lemon cream sauce etc. then yes I tip because they went out of thier way for me.

Nope. And to be honest, I don't tend to go back to places that have those tip jars. Says a lot about the attitude and management.

I am a regular customer at our Sonic. I need a 12 Step program. Twice a day minimum, for my Diet Coke!!!!! I don't tip for the soda that is brought to my car.

If we eat there, we eat outside at the tables and I do tip for service at the tables. The servers clean up the tables, bring refills etc. and that I feel is the same as eating in at a sit-down restaurant.

NO, not usually, i see those tip jars at the bagel stores also -

Hello everyone! :)

I was just wondering if you tip when you pick up yourself carry-out food like pizza or Chinese food?

I always feel guilty when I pick up Chinese and see the tip jar, so usually do tip them via their tip jar.

I just wondered what everyone else does? :)

Sometimes if I'm running low on money I may opt for take-out to avoid a tip and drinks, but end of tipping anyway for take-out if I go to pick up and see a tip jar. Its not a big deal, I was just curious what was the norm? :)

FYI, I always tip if its delivered, I just wondered about tipping if you go in to pick up take-out food like pizza, chinese etc... :)

Thanks,
Shelly :)

I don't tip when I get a pizza carry-out, just like I don't tip at Burger King or Starbucks.

I tip at starbucks lol but then again I order a complicated drink. But then again since I go often enough I usually don't have to even order it they just make it and charge me for it now.
