Do you tip for maintenance?

I have never tipped maintenance. I guess I just think they are fixing things that should be working, and that is not my fault. Wanting extra blankets as my travel mates (my sister and her whole family) like the rooms set to arctic freeze, well that is on me.

Tipping maintenance for fixing a problem with a hotel room im paying for seems ludicrous to me. I feel if anything the hotel should give me money/partial refund for the inconvenience of whatever issue im having to deal with. Like why would anyone tip them to fix something broken that the hotel should have had fixed before I checked in?

Yeah, not tipping maintenance. I always tip housekeeping as they’re cleaning up after ME! Maintenance is fixing a problem that should’ve been addressed before I occupied the room.

I will say that on one DCL we had to call for a toilet that wouldn’t flush. When we returned from our excursion, we had all sorts of treats left in our room from “management”, apologizing for the inconvenience of a nonflushing toilet!

At Disney, they are not allowed to take a tip. If they refuse and a guest absolutely insists, it is supposed to be turned over to their supervisor and put in a fund to buy cookies, pizza, etc. for the Cast. That is what we had to do when I was at the FD there.

I reported a problem with my room shortly after I checked in -- the bathroom fan would not go off, and it was loud, so it wasn't going to be very conducive to sleeping. The first maintenance person was unable to fix it, so he simply disabled it for the night and scheduled for someone to come the next day. When I came back to my room in the afternoon, all the lights were on, the fan was on, what I had hanging in the shower stall (wet towel, hanging on the clothesline) was taken down (not laying in a "fell off" position), there was stuff in the toilet that was not mine (putting it nicely), and the mousekeeping tip on the tray in front of the coffeemaker was gone. The bathroom fan was now quieter and not constantly running, so I know that it was maintenance that was in the room. And the trash cans were not emptied, so I know mousekeeping was not there.

Do you leave a tip for maintenance? Would the maintenance guy have legitimately thought that was his tip? My thought is that the maintenance employees probably make a lot more than mousekeepers do and they are not someone to be tipped. Mousekeeping actually provides a service for us as individuals and they depend on tips.

I reported everything to management and they sent the head of housekeeping to talk to me. I emphasized to him that it was not housekeeping's issue, that I hadn't even had room service yet, having checked in the day before (moderate resort). He talked to maintenance, the employee was already gone for the day, so I will probably not know the outcome of that. I was credited the missing money on my account.

This morning a part of me is feeling guilty for reporting it. I wouldn't want to cost someone their job, but then again, perhaps some more training is needed for this person.
You absolutely should report this. This Disney employee should be fired. In fact Disney should do more for you that credit the money that was taken. They shouldn’t be putting people in rooms with maintenance issues. I’m not surprised they sent housekeeping because it is also a housekeeping issue. The room should not be checked off as ready by housekeeping if there is a maintenance issue. It means housekeeping isn’t bothering note maintenance problems. Their standards have really gone down— unacceptable.

The bathroom fans are a sensor situation and stay on for a bit when you aren’t there. Not something housekeeping would catch.

Housekeeping is responsible for checking for maintenance issues and reporting them. Of course they should catch fans that don’t turn off. They just didn’t bother.

No employee should be fired for this, that’s ridiculous. Disney has absolutely no qualms placing guests in rooms that have issues or are next to rooms under going active construction, so to go and fire employees over things Disney fines acceptable in other situations is ridiculous and unfair.

Do you tip every day? I leave a tip when we check out and not before then. It can't be just me. If I was house keeping and didn't know for a fact you had checked out I would be reluctant to take any money, note or otherwise. And Maintenance? yeesh. No way are they getting a tip. Do your job so the fan isn't broken when I check in. Anything less is a bad mark on the resort.

If a maintenance person comes into a room and leaves waste in the toilet which they shouldn’t even be using, touches clothing they have no reason to touch, and takes a tip which they are not sure is for them, yes, they should be fired. All maintenance people I have encountered at Disney have been fabulous and incredibly respectful. This should be the standard.

Firing someone is a bit extreme based on something like this that cannot be proven and just based on hearsay. This is this persons livelihood. Also, leaving tips out like that could 100% meant that the maintance person thought it was a tip for them. I’m having a hard time believing that the maintaince person accepted a tip and then as a thank you leave a turd in the toliet. It is possible though

We usually tip housekeeping every day.

On our last stay we completely forgot until the check out day. That morning I walked out into the hallway and noticed the housekeeper was one I'd never seen before.

We didn't leave her a weeks worth of tips, and we will for sure remember every day next time, like usual.

They don’t even come everyday except in the $500+ resorts.

I've never worked housekeeping, but if it's anything like restaurants the tip is shared. I do see your point - those working on checkout-heavy days would get bigger tips. I also like your strategy as housekeeping is rarely a daily thing anymore, so if you leave the tip and nobody services the room, then nobody gets the tip and you are tipping for only the days where the room was actually serviced. Makes sense.

As for the maintenance guy, there is no reason why he would be anywhere near the nightstand or TV where you leave the tip - he'd have to go look for it if he's working in the bathroom. Siding more on the side of some shady doings on the OPs situation.

The value room rooms are pretty small. He would pass by pretty much the entire room to get to the bathroom which is at the far end of the hotel room. Remember it’s motel style rooms so the bathrooms are at the back whereas for regular hotel rooms bathrooms are at the front.

I think tipping housekeeping is done so far and few between and the maintance worker might have thought it was for him. Now the turd in the toliet idk

I guess your bar for "benefit of the doubt" is different than mine - NBD.

But...

If you meant to leave a tip for the guy working on the fan in the bathroom, wouldn't you leave the tip on the bathroom counter where he is working?
