I don’t want to speak for anybody else, but I think it came from some repeatedly saying they weren’t local, so they’d bring just as much to the OC economy as somebody out of state would and have the reply be about being local. For example, where I live, I would bring just as much revenue to the OC area as somebody coming from UT or AZ because we have the same needs when we get there. I don’t necessarily think it’s how it was meant, but it did very much read (to me anyway) that there was a higher value put on out of state tourism dollars than in state.I totally get that! It has to be frustrating in Californians right now. I guess I missed where people were being dismissive - not saying it didn't happen, I just haven't seen all the posts yet. Thank you for responding kindly, I do appreciate that.
I think I was just taken aback when something insignificant (such as talking about the economy in terms of locals and tourists) was deemed insulting and then some start talking down to others and telling them to use their words wisely. Everyone contributes to the economy, especially Californians since they live there. But tourists are also the bread and butter of the Orange County economy. Hopefully things will get back to normal quickly and this can all be a distant memory!
And I think two different things were being discussed. Those of us in CA were trying to explain that what was allowed would easily be filled by in state visitors, so it wasn’t really an issue, while others were trying to say the restrictions were the problem.
And I get the frustration. I do! But I also understand the restrictions, based on how strict our rules have been here. While location may be arbitrary, it is fact we have done a lot of work for the last year and we don’t want to see it undone. Because in the end, the people in the state will suffer the consequences of any spikes.
I don’t know if that makes any sense? And yes, hopefully by the time they open, it’s close to a moot point.
