When I was a kid, my dad traveled a fair amount for business, and he always brought home all the hotel "freebies". These showed up, wrapped, in our Christmas stockings each year! It became a major joke in our family, so four years ago when my brother had been travelling a lot for his job, he saved up every single hotel "freebie" he could get his hands on and ended up with a very large box filled with hotel soaps, shampoos, mending kits, lotions, etc. Us kids all got together and we spent a few hours wrapping each one of those items, then putting groups of them into boxes and wrapping the boxes. Dad's stocking on Christmas morning was overflowing with the travel items, and at least half of the presents for him under the tree were boxs of the travel stuff!
He laughed so hard he was crying by the end of it.
I think he donated it all to a homeless shelter the following week, but a few items are getting recirculated through the family each Christmas.
I keep the nicer stuff (bath & body works from one hotel, Aveda from another) for our guests and make a basket with toiletries, towels, a local map, some snacks, etc. for anyone who stays with us. The rest of the soaps, shampoos, etc. I donate to either the homeless shelter or the women's shelter.
