all downstairs windows when your sleeping ?

I do every night. But maybe its because I watch all these real crime shows, so I always got violent crime in the back of my mind

I don't even lock my door when I am out. I live in a small town, not much crime here.

Yes I do. When I was about 12, we lived in a 1 story house, no air conditioner, or air conditioner units. a guy tried to break into the house via my bedroom window with me sleeping. He was run off and I can still see the kind of car he drove off in in my mind.

Every single night. And I have two 80lb K9s ready to greet anyone who enters.

We live in a ridiculously safe neighborhood but I keep everything locked all the time, windows and doors. I'm just a cautious person. I don't run the washer, dryer, or dishwasher when we're not home either.

woooo, thats scary, wonder what would have happen. There are crazy people out there dont think twice about violent crime

how could I do that if I'm sleeping:confused3 :rotfl: No, I dont and I know I should.

Absolutely. Not long after we moved in, our next door neighbor had an intruder come in through an unlocked sliding glass door. The next day we added additional locks where the windows can only be opened so far and a lock in the door frame of the sliding glass door to prevent the door from being lifted out of the frame. Since DD & I are home alone most of the night, it gives me additional peace of mind (besides 1 dog who would bite anyone trying to get in the house).

If I don't have the AC on, I leave them cracked-I have a security lock on them so they can only be opened about about 3 inches. ( lock is on the inside)

I also have a 140 lb dog who doesn't like unknown people coming into the house.

my dog at the time, a medium mix, actually was outside of my room going crazy scratching at my door to get in my room. it woke my dad up, I was a heavy sleeper and the guy was trying to get in my window:scared1:

the guy was never caught.

I never saw the guy, but my DF saw him running to the car. I saw the car speeding off and I still remember it after all these years a brown older dodge challenger=do not park your getaway car under a street light.

one car was in the shop and the other was in the garage, so it looked like no one was home.

it took me a very long time to feel "safe" again.

Wow, I watch a LOT of true crime stories and most of them concern towns that NO ONE locks their doors. I didn't even know that EXISTED.

In NY you become an expert on locks, window gates, and security. It was a part of life. Since I moved South it's not as prevelant but I was STILL robbed twice..:headache:

I lock EVERYTHING!!!:scared:

I spent a summer reading criminal court case files in a county that combined rural, suburban and urban. Regardless of locale, most home crimes were the result of a criminal taking advantage of an unwary household occupant. They were either opportunistic in that a criminal saw an open window and took advantage of it or he was out trying doors/windows to find those that were unlocked.

Having read endless reams of paper describing burglaries, assaults and rapes that occurred in homes with unlocked doors and windows, there is no way on earth I'd ever leave either unlocked. I cannot tell you how many times I read, "I never leave my windows open, but it was so hot that night, I thought I'd take the chance...."

There was a time when I didn't, but now I do.. And like you, I think my attitude changed when I started hearing on the news (or seeing on "48 Hours" and such) that burglars and/or attackers came through open or unlocked windows during the night..

I still don't keep my door locked during the day though - like many people do.. For some reason that doesn't bother me as much.. If nothing else, I would be awake and alert, so I would be able to react to a situation much quicker than being startled awake from a sound sleep and it being pitch dark in here..
